I have an Ubuntu server with no physical access to it, only via ssh/vnc.
It is stuck on a 1680x1050 resolution and in the system display settings the menus are disabled since there is no detected real display connected.
I need to lower the resolution to e.g. 800x600. code...
I am running Puppy from a usb in Windows 7 using Virtual Box and I can't get the 1280 x 800 screen resolution to work. The probe doesn't recognize my monitor initially in the video setup. When I choose this screen resolution in the xorgwizard it ignores the resolution I select and uses 1600 x 1200. If I try to reduce the resolution in the resolution changer, it decreases the window size but the desktop stays at the same resolution effectively cutting off the majority of the desktop from view. I have been trying the intel, radeon, vesa, and vmware drivers but none of them seem to work. Do I need to install a special video driver? I am using a unibody macbook.

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is my first posting as a Linux Newbie. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 inside of a MS Virtual PC on my Vista machine. Everything seems to work beautifully and is stable. However, I would like to use a resolution higher than the current maximum of 800x600. I've poked around on the web and have tried various tips. I tried using the xrandr options which added a higher resolution mode, but when I would try to set the output to that resolution, I would get an error message to the effect that I could not exceed the current maximum of 800x600.
I tried to cobble parameter values together and create an xorg.conf file, but every iteration seems to produce a bunch of colorful vertical bars within my Virtual PC window, and I would have to blow away that virtual PC setup and rebuild it (along with reinstalling Ubuntu). As I said, 800x600 is not a show stopper, but I would like to take advantage of the real estate I have with my display. These "fifty-five year old" eyes could benefit from the larger size. FYI, I did take a stab at installing Virtual Box, but got the infamous "blue screen", so I would rather stick with what appears to be a stable virtual PC base.
So I know now that I reach the login screen, and I know to hit control, alt, f1. However, all attempts to reset the resolution have failed. Here's how it went down. I was working with nvidia driver. Already was frustrated I couldn't get a working wide screen setting for my toshiba hd tv/monitor but that's a seperate issue. I was trying to get the driver to recognize my separate monitor to an hd tv in the living room using the video out. works fine with windows. I got it to recognize, it made me save settings, and then restart. Note resolution settings are set to automatic right now. Then when I restart, I get to ubuntu splash screen, it plays the chime, and shows a blank black screen. Control alt f1 brings me the menu.
I have been told to type (this is just quick type, I used the proper commands in reality)
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phighxserver - xorg
xrandr --output lvds --mode 1024x768
I found one article that gave a three step process.
sudo cp /etc/x11/xorg.conf / etc/x11/xorg.conf.custom
sudo sh -c 'md5sum ' etc'/x11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum'
sudo dpk-reconfigure xserver-xorg.
Nothing gave me any of the results I expected from command doesn't exist to completely irrelevant menus. Start me from the beginning to what I should do. Yes I logged in properly with my username and password to. Do the 'etc' in the command need to be filled with something else like a drive letter or something. I'm so lost, should I disconnect my tv? Also I tried running in safe mode and it said something about display not found.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 workstation with two virtualized guest OSes using KVM/QEMU. Also both 64-bit. One is Fedora 12 the other is beta of Ubuntu 10.04.
The problem is that I would like to use a larger size display that is configured by default.
Both guest OSes have a maximum screen resolution of 1024x768. I would like to increase this to something like 1280x900 or 1440x900. The resolution of the host system is 1920x1080.
This configuration appears to be a result of the installation detecting the resolution being reported by the virtual screen during installation.
The only information I have found on the subject suggests modifying the xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 directory. Neither guest system has this file.
I tried creating one by hand in the Fedora system and managed to render it completely unusable. Not a big deal as this is recently installed and can be reinstalled easily.
I am running 'Slitaz.3' but don't have a clue how i may change the screen resolution.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Opensuse 11.4 (gnome) in a new desktop but the screen resolution is 1360x768 60hz and this is not listed in monitor settings, so the monitor keeps displaying "not optimized mode" message. In order to use the correct resolution, I used these two commands:xrandr --newmode "1360x768_60.00" 84.75 1360 1432 1568 1776 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsyncxrandr --addmode VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"it worked, but every time the computer is restarted, I must run this command again. So I think "I just have to create a script in the initialization!". It works, every time the computer is started, there is no need to run the commands again. But when program enters in full screen, the resolution is "lost" and the monitor message is displayed again.

I have been using VirtualBox for really long time, and personally I like it a lot, specially the screen resolution auto change to fit the window size. Lately I have moved to qemu/kvm for the sole reason to learn kvm, I have been missing different things from VirtualBox, but Am trying to stuck with It for now as I said just to learn It. Now to my question, Is there a way to get an automatic screen resolution change to fit the window size of the VM like what I get in VirtualBox?

know of a way in Linux to have a virtual ethernet (e.g., eth0:1) appear as a "real" ethernet (eth1)? I ask because I have an old Shuttle box that only has one mobo ethernet and no way to add more. I'd like to use it in my Oracle RAC lab, but RAC requires two physical ethernets. You can't fool it with eth0 and eth0:1. RAC won't setup correctly if there's only one eth adapter, so I'm wondering if there is a way to fake two ethernets. I do not care about performance or reliability - it's my home lab. I fully realize that this violates every principle of HA, but I'm just using it to study. Worst case, I can get a USB dongle ethernet adapter, but I'd prefer to avoid the cost if possible.

I couldn't get the right resolution on the external screen (1920/1080) so I disconnected it and rebooted. Now there is only an "unknown" screen in the display menu. I have rewritten the xorg conf file per instructions for enabling GMA500 but to no avail - conf file looks right but screen is "unknown", low resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio, instead of 16:9. How to restore to laptop monitor - I think I can take from there to enable the right resolution.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Optiplex GX270, with the Intel video chip. I have a problem with my virtual consoles/terminals (<ctrl-alt>F1-F6). The default screen resolution was set to 1600x1200 at installation, which results in a nearly microscopic, unreadable font. I posted the problem on this thread on ubuntuforums.org, where they suggested adding GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=640x480 to /etc/default/grub and /etc/grub.d/00_header. Still no joy--the console screen resolution still was 1600x1200.
I have noticed that the screen resolution changes three times during boot; it starts at standard VGA, 640x480, then switches to 1600x1200, then finally to 1024x768, which is my preferred resolution in X. But, if I switch to a virtual console, the resolution shoots up to 1600x1200 again. There are times when I like to use virtual terminals, and I would like to avoid eyestrain.
I am on Lucid 10.04 with Nvidia 9600m (v195.36.24) My TV is 1280x720, my Laptop is 1600x900 (Closest setting to the TV is 1360x768 ). I plug my laptop to my tv via an HDMI cable. I press F1 to get into my presentation mode, and the tv shows most of the desktop, but not all of it. Is there any way to conveniently make it so it automatically sets it to 1280x720?

After restarting the lock up crypt hdd shows. After that debian login screen should show. It does not. Only the pointer shows.If I put the hdd in another note book, the debian login screen shows on the notebook's display. I then connect the vga display.
Then I can select settings, displays and mirror debian gui and gui will show on both displays. After restarting the notebook both displays show the debian gui. If I then put the hdd into the notebook mainboard, then the vga display will not show the debian login screen. The pointer shows. On ubuntu settings, displays, general option, I can set all displays. That option is not in debian 8. How do I get debian 8 to show the debian 8 login screen on the notebook mainboard vga display only computer?
I am running Windows 7 inside Virtual Machine Manager - running on Cent OS 5.6. My problem is that the Windows 7 'Window', is only about half the size of the screen. Is there any to change the resolution of the OS running inside Virtual Machine Manager?

I installed the proprietary bumblebee-nvidia (version 3.2.1) as per the instructions in URL...The problem is that when I connect a monitor to the laptop, the image is duplicated with only part of the screen showing on the second monitor. The monitor itself is not detected in the display settings or arandr / xrandr, so I can't change the resolution or set dual display, etc. Here is the output of xrandr:

I recently purchased an iMac 27" i7 with 8GB RAM, however after i installed UBUNTU i can't seen to find a way to set my display resolution to 2560 x 1440.
This is my second try on UBUNTU, the first time i was happy but disappointed on how difficult changing settings could be, this time seems not to be any different.

After upgrading from 11 -> 12 the resolution of the virtual consoles stays the same, to large. I already compared grub.conf,i18n which are the same. I want to change the default resolution of 1280x1024 to 1024x768. Setting at boot using the space bar or the KDE display (personal settings) does not survive the next boot. In yast or yast2, hardware, there is no monitor selection (something wrong here?).
Using root, run level 3, the command sax2 --vesa 1024x768 does nothing.
or sax2 -m 0=fbdev does nothing.
I had no problem with previous suse releases. What am I missing?
I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 on Virtual Box, I have installed it successfully, the only problem is when I check the display settings it only have 2 options : 600 X 400 and 800 X 600 and this makes it difficult to work on Ubuntu as 800 X 600 is half the size of my desktop. How I can increase / configure the display settings so that atleast I can fit ubuntu screen into my screen size.
I did install the addition application, restarted the OS but still I don't see any display resolution 1200 X 800, tried pressing ctrl+D nothing happens, after installing I saw it updated mouse cursor now i don't have to press ctrl key again n again to enter into the ubuntu OS but still struggling with the resolution as it's too small, please guide me (here is the screen shot of my screen after installing the addition app).
