OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Screen Display Not Working Any More ?

Apr 22, 2011

I recently upgraded to suse11.4 and everything worked fine for a few months. Suddenly after logging in (GUI - LXDE desktop) the background screen is all what I can see and no menus, not even right click opens anything. Same in KDE desktop. All I can do is throw myself out with Ctrl Alt and F1. startx returns that the server is already running. All I can do is using (as root) "rm -rf /tmp/X0-lock" and then "startx --:1". That opens the GUI but only as root. What can I do that I can log in normally again? By the way I tried to reinstall but I only get to loading drivers and then everything stops.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Login After Screen Display

Apr 23, 2011

i installed opensuse 11.4 on my laptop (Lenovo T60, Mobility Radeon X1400). It worked fine for some weeks, the first problem that I found was that libreoffice did not work. Calc crashed immediately (screen looked "destroyed", only the panel was really visible, but the system seemed to work so I could log out without alt+ctr+del), writer had the problem after opening some menu options. Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. After restarting, I cannot even log in anymore, the screen looks destroyed as with libreoffice. I created a new user, this works and this is from where I write.

OpenSUSE Install :: White Display After Login Screen

Dec 29, 2009

This is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

OpenSUSE :: Disabling Screen Lock / Enable Display Power Management?

Sep 14, 2009

I am a brand new user coming from the MS environment. My impression of openSUSE is that it is like moving into a new house that is well built but the rooms are full of half-constructed self-assembly furniture and appliances without any specific instructions. Nor is it clear which does what and whether all are needed or not. There is a town hall down the road where fellow homeowners gather to discuss what each has managed to deduce about putting their own furniture together. The town hall has a sort of library where thousands of pieces of paper with instructions are stored in an ad-hoc filing system

My latest problem is that I have created a screensaver via the "Configure Desktop" application and set "Enable display power management" and set some timeouts. However, I seem to be asked for a password to unlock the screen when I come back to my computer. I have spent 2 hours trying to find the place where I can disable screen password locking but to no avail. I am perplexed and frustrated at how such an obvious function is so ****ed hard to configure. This is the impression I am getting of Linux in general - it is novice user-hostile and badly organised.

Slackware :: Consoles Don't Display Any Output

I am using a 64-bit Slackware 13.1 distro (I chose 64 by mistake, to be honest, as I know there's less trouble with a 32-bit distro) and I have some problems with my consoles (in text mode). After changing the runlevel in ininittab to graphic mode (4), I can't enter any of my consoles. Actually, only ctrl+alt F1 shows some output, regarding the graphic mode (I'm currently using KDE4, the default for slackware 13.1) and F6 is the only normal consoles I have access to. However, if I log out and log in (with another user, maybe) there's no output anywhere (not on F1, neither on F6).

General :: Restrict Output To Display One File Each?

But this command returns every single occurence, so that if a given file has several occurences of the pattern, the screen fills up pretty quick. More than likely, there's a way to restrict the output so that it only displays each file once, no matter how many occurences it contains, but I couldn't find how to do it.

General :: Display Specific Block Of Contents Or Lines In Output?

Apr 23, 2010

Consider a situation in which you want to display only specific lines of contents from a file or of a command's output. Yes, we have head and tail commands. But, how to view all the lines of a file except the last one or vise versa when we don't know the count of lines in advance?

Consider this output:

Code:

[root@localhost ~]# ps au | grep bash
root 6316 0.0 0.0 4672 1440 tty1 Ss+ Apr22 0:02 -bash
root 20847 0.2 0.0 4672 1432 pts/0 Ss Apr23 0:12 -bash
root 21167 0.0 0.0 3920 660 pts/0 S+ 01:00 0:00 grep bash

Here, I don't want the last line (in italic) to be included in the result since the last line is due to "grep bash" in the devised command "ps au | grep bash". Well, we can rewrite the devised command:

Quote:

"ps au | grep bash | head -n 2"

But, again, here we are specifying the count of lines to be included. But, in the presented problem we don't know any count in advance!

Fixing the physical setup is not possible or at least unlikely for the moment: the only solution is to carefully resize and position windows so that they display in the visible part of the screen - using full-screen mode is out.

Is there a way around this via software, using xrandr for example?

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Gnome 2.3 Display - CRTC Error That The Display Is Over The Maximum - 1920x1920

Apr 16, 2011

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).

I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.

I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

Fedora :: Wobbling Screen On VGA Output?

Feb 12, 2011

first of all, during last few days I've visited this forum and asked for help, all in trying to fix the problem which I had. I failed to do so, and I am really frustrated now, as it is off very big importance.I'm huge fan of linux and fedora, so it kills me to have to boot to windows to do simple thing.

Problem: I bought DELL Vostro 3300. When I try to connect it through VGA(only output it has) to my monitor (tried different monitors, same effect), my screen wobbles. The higher the resolution -> higher the wobbling is. It is almost impossible to read text due to this. I attached extension which I recorded the wobbling (mp4 extension). Wobbling is even during linux startup, before xorg is loaded.

On lowest resolution wobbling is very little. It's same on different frequncies. I've tried different kernels but with no success.

What's important, it's not faulty hardware, since it works fine on Windows.

The problem has same characteristic as one mentioned here in buglist. In new kernel it's supposed to be fixed as I understand(?) but it's not for me.
