Hardware :: Using Fedora 14 With A Gateway Tower With HD Screen Connected?
Dec 17, 2010
I am using Fedora 14 with a Gateway tower w/HD screen connected, obviously, with an HDMI cable. It works just fine, except for when I play some stuff online. It's only some stuff, not all. So I was just gonna ask if it has anything to do with the quality of the video. If the video isn't HD, will the sound come out worse on my computer?

i have a leased line ( speed 2 MB ) which we use to connect to our mail server , oracle ERP etc.. we have a dhcp scope defined as 192.168.100.1-192.168.101.254. with a default gateway as 192.168.100.90 ( which is a cisco router ) we have a pix firewall ( 192.168.100.10 ).. now the gateway passed all the request to firewall..we have an ADSL of 4 MB speed.. ip is 83.*.*.230 from ISP. i have a proxy server ( squid ) eth0 is connected to ISP (83.*.*.230).. eth1 to LAN ( 192.168.100.79 ) now the problem is when i put default gateway to eth1 ie 192.168.100.90 the squid connects to internet via leased line.. if i leave the default gateway field empty on eth1 , the squid connects to internet via ADSL ( which i want ) but the problem is no one on the lan cant ping the squid server ( no connectivity to internet for the whole LAN ) how can i solve this problem? PS : i want squid to connect to internet with ADSL, but if i put gateway on eth1 ie LAN squid goes through leased line which i dont want to happen

This applies to GDM as well, but I'm using KDM right now so:
Linux 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP x86_64
I setup XDMCP:
/etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
Willing=/etc/X11/xdm/Xwilling
Xaccess=/etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess
[security]
AllowRemoteRoot=true
DisallowTCP=false
/etc/kde/kdm/Xaccess (link to the xdm 'xaccess' file) includes:
* CHOOSER BROADCAST
In KDM settings I set it to 'no theme' and 'no custom background'. IPTables & SELinux are both off. The client & server are both on the same switch. I can connect successfully. But all I get is a black screen & an X cursor, never get to see the login prompt. Most things I find have to do with the inability to connect at all, but this connects. I'm having this problem on RHEL5.4, CentOS5.4, & Fedora 12. I'm troubleshooting it on Fedora though. I'm not able to even log in.
I must point out that for CentOS5/RHEL5 I got this working, but I didn't do anything differently that I know of. I just repeated the same process over again....but I'm using GDM on those. Is it possible that I may have to use GDM for KDE because it works with GDM? I'd like to get KDM working because that's what it's designed to do right? work the way it's configured. I've not had a chance to look into it with KDM since the time that I posted this thread.

i had a very old server given to me. it's a Compaq Prosignia 200. it has a 166 pentium, more than 64 mb of ram(unkown because i see 2 32mb sticks and there are 2 more smaller sized sticks), a cd drive, a 6 gb hdd, and enough pci slots for 3 nic. i'd like to use it for a router for my 2 home pc's. i have no idea what im doing or if the hardware itself will run as a router. i do have a 25mb connection and dont really want to lose my bandwidth.probably too much to ask but i thought i'd give it a go.

I am a complete beginner to Linux (I understand a little bit of terminal from my OSX usage). I did a fresh install of Debian on an older Gateway laptop to try and make it usable for something. There is no other OS installed to this machine, I would like it to run Debian exclusively.
I used the UNetbootin application to install Debian from USB [URL] ..... Everything seemed to install just fine (no errors). However, upon 1st boot, I am presented with a black screen with a blinking white cursor. I cannot seem to get past this. I searched around and found this post: [URL] ... which seems identical except that their machine is a Mac. I had no luck using the REISUB reboot method. When I hold Alt+SysRq or Alt+PrtSc, it makes a lot of beeping noise. Issuing the REISUB keystrokes while holding does nothing.

Recently installed ubuntu on my gateway m275 tablet alongside windows xp tablet. Everything, including the stylus/pen without any poking around. However, I'm having trouble getting the screen orientation to rotate.
If I go to system-preferences-monitors, the only option for rotation is "normal".
Here is my xorg.conf:

My IBM IntelliStation M Pro desktop tower has IDE hardware: CD burner and CD player. My computer (which is ~ 6 years old I think) has an unused SATA power plug end and an unused SATA data transfer port so I thought I'd buy a SATA DVD burner/CD burner combo to replace the PATA CD burner. But I read the following line at Wikipedia and wonder exactly what it means:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA "Backward and forward compatibility- SATA and PATA At the device level, SATA and PATA (Parallel AT Attachment) devices remain completely incompatiblethey cannot be interconnected......" What does that 'interconnected' really mean? Can I have my 2 IDE hard drives and my IDE CD player play nicely with a SATA DVD burner/CD combo burner? [My OS is MEPIS 8.5]

Im running suse 11.2 on a gateway lt3103u during boot i noticed the screen goes dim. i thought nothing of it untill i tried to watch *ahem* educational video *ahem*. ive found that no matter what program i use xine vlc or anything else that video sets the screen to dim as if it were in power saving mode. this problem also occurs when i close the lid. it locks the screen into dim mode. in both cases i can use both Fn keys and the power management widget to reset it to bright, but this problem is annoying having to keep turning it back u to see.

i've got a DELL Tower UPS 1000W which i would make work with a Linux CentOS 5.4 64-bit (kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5) system using USB connection.Dell claims that this UPS is 100% working with RHEL 5.x (w/ serial and usb), but they don't provide support for CentOS (even if it's quite the same linux distribution)...When i plug in the USB cable the system reports:
usb 6-2: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 6-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

the system was off and now it won't boot up. It have power because the monitor is showing the orange light as if the tower is off. I'm assuming it may be the PSU went dead. Well, today, I've changed the PSU which should be a good working one and still no power to the tower system. I dont overclock. As far as I can tell the fan is not spinning since this has happen. This is an Intel C2D, Biostar motherboard, 320gb WD HD & 2gb memory.

I'm using a Gateway LT3103u running a dual boot of Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 (separate partitions) and ever since I've started using Ubuntu (last October) I've had persistent graphic card problems.
My graphics card is the ATI Radeon X1270.
Right now I can't use any visual effects because of I do the screen spazzes out and becomes unusable. This isn't a big deal for me since I don't use them but I figured it's relevant to the problem.
Even with visual effects off I still have problems and at times parts of the menu will stay on the screen in a little box which covers any windows that open beneath it. The only way to get rid of it is to turn visual effects on so the screen resets then hit use previous settings.

I just connected my LCD TV to my desktop and now I get two things happening which I didn't get when I used a proper monitor:
the screen scrolls down and sort of flickers every minute or so, plus: every few minutes it goes competely 'blank' i.e. reverts to the blue screen of my TV when there is no signal.
It should be in Ubuntu NOT Kubuntu!

I have a VNC connection running to my Ubuntu 10.04 server [URL]. This was running fine for a day or 2 after that, sometimes it worked and sometimes not. When it didn't work, I could connect with VNC (i got a gray window with the cursor) but no login screen was shown.
After some testing I now know what the root cause is. When I disconnect the screen from my server, I don't get the login screen. When I connect the screen (even if it is not powered) after a reboot, I can see the login screen. Next I was looking for some logging that could indicate some problems. I looked into "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and there I see a difference when I connect/disconnect the screen. When the screen is disconnected, the log says:
Code:
(II) intel(0): Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) Pineview G
(--) intel(0): Chipset: "Pineview G"
(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 has no monitor section
(II) intel(0): EDID for output VGA1

I know about ubuntu. Not debian.I have installed debian 8 64bit on a notebook mainboard vga display only.During installation vga display worked. After restarting the lock up crypt hdd shows. After that debian login screen should show. It does not. Only the pointer shows.If I put the hdd in another note book, the debian login screen shows on the notebook's display. I then connect the vga display.
Then I can select settings, displays and mirror debian gui and gui will show on both displays. After restarting the notebook both displays show the debian gui. If I then put the hdd into the notebook mainboard, then the vga display will not show the debian login screen. The pointer shows. On ubuntu settings, displays, general option, I can set all displays. That option is not in debian 8. How do I get debian 8 to show the debian 8 login screen on the notebook mainboard vga display only computer?

I have a netbook (Acer Aspire One) I'm running Slackware 13. and usually, I prefer to connect an external monitor. When I switch my machine on with the monitor connected, the display is duplicated on both screens and since I just want the netbook's screen to be off and only see the display on the external monitor, I can doxrandr --output LVDS --off
Great! However, it's a hassle to do this every time I log in and I'd like to automate the process if possible. I did some googling and I found that if you want to automate xrandr commands, you can put a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ (see this). I wrote the following script to automate my xrandr commands and since the Xsession.d directory didn't exist, I tried creating it. The script was called 45custom-xrandr_settings, as the one on the RandR wiki is called the same.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Check whether the external monitor is connected
[code]...

I've just installed fedora 10 on my Dell Inspiron 1525, and I can't connect to my wireless net. I know how to manually enter the SSID (and have no clue what a BSSID is), MAC address, and I know it's infastructure (well, it's not ad-hoc, so it must be).
The problem is, my router uses a 64-bit encryption protocol, and there's no '64-bit' key option under Wireless Security's dropdown. Is there any way around this, aside from either changing the encryption protocol, or plugging it in manually (neither of which are options)?

I setup my computer to share printers on home network. So I set my F11 PC for manual ip & it works fine for print sharing but now I can't get to the Internet. I noticed under manual settings that every time I set the gateway & try to apply it, it jumps back to all 0's. If I set it to DHCP, I get to the Internet no problem. I just have 2 wireless configs right now 1 for printing & 1 for Internet but it would be a lot easier if I could just use the one manual setting & get it to keep the gateway setting. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router. And I do select a manual IP outside the range the router uses for DHCP.

I have installed fedora 11 64 bit on a new computer. I have no problems accessing the computers on my local network, but can not get past the gateway. The gateway is running windows XP with IP address 192.168.0.1 and is named "internet". When I boot the new computer in windows, there is no problem. Here is the output of some commands I saw in other posts with similar problems:
