Software :: Debian Ppc Install Iso When Checked Says - Invalid No Of Alocation Blocks
Feb 5, 2011
The debian 5.0.8 ppc cd (regular and xfce) say invalid no of allocation blocks when checked. And when burned and booted with DEBCONF_PRIORITY=low cant load all of the addiotinal installer components, and wont retry. Is the debian cd supposted to be like that or is that a problem with it, i tried burning it twice and it had errors loading installer components both times when i booted them. Are my cds just the problem?

I installed Debian 5.03 Lenny successfully on my machine. I got this error during boot: ACPI : invalid PBLK length [5]. After that the Operating System boots properly and starts normally. What does this error statement mean? Is it safe to work with this installation despite this error?

I saw my disk doing some strange activity. Checked top and found 'nobody' running find. Looked at who but saw no one strange (Ive had breakins before when I was foolish with a password)
So two questions: When does find run under user nobody? In ubuntu Ive seen updatedb running automatically but not in debianWhat are the ports check and other security measures I need to take? (eg not running sshd unnecessarily)

I'm new to Debian and I have just installed it on three machines. To begin with they checked about 60 or so repos when doing an update. Then quite quickly this dropped to 48. I have removed the DVD media from the sources list after installation but that was before I saw this drop. It happened after an update as far as I can tell. I didn't think anything of it at the time. By the time all three were set up they were all only checking 48 repos. However I also have a VM, for trying out new stuff, and whilst that has been updated it still remains at about 60 (currently 59).

I have recently installed Debian Lenny with KDE3. I foolishly checked Auto Login after installation and now I can't get rid of it. The KDE Login Manager window seems to offer the option of turning off auto login, but it does not work. I have tried useradd and userdel but this only makes things worse.

I just installed jessie on a machine that had been running wheezy with no problems. Now I see that a kworker process is hogging nearly 100% of one of the CPUs. I am not sure how to proceed with solving the problem even after doing a number of Google searches.
I'm not sure if this is related, but I am getting the following when I run 'dmesg':

I ordered a SuSE 11.4 installation DVD from an online Linux Distro distributer that I've used before with no problems. I did this rather than burn my own DVD from the website. I thought that I might perform a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 on this Dell 1420 Laptop that is currently running Ubuntu 11.04.
Note, this is a completely fresh install, not a side-by-side installation with Ubuntu; I followed the installation sequence that completely repartitions the entire disk for SuSE, and accepted all of the suggested options regarding logon, etc.
Everything goes well ... sort of. The first install didn't reboot correctly, i.e., the set-up that is supposed to run after the initial install never happened and I had to manually power-down the machine and restart from the "safe mode." Needless to say, that didn't work as expected. So, I re-install, from scratch, trying different options: for instance, instead of LVM, I decide to have an un-encrypted partition scheme and accept the "obvious" options ... thinking that the LVM options interacted badly with the install. Eventually I get the installation to proceed correctly, or so it appears: it goes though the entire sequence, including the re-boot, building the default image, etc.
I test this image by removing the DVD, power-cycling the machine, and all looks good, so I begin the process of installing software updates, etc. Being paranoid, I re-boot the machine, and all restarts correctly, etc.
Now here's the annoying thing. The next day, I power the machine on, and it locks at the splash screen. By the way, these are the exact symptoms that I experienced with the bogus/incomplete installations. The boot sequence proceeds up to the splash screen and waits forever.
So, in sum: I spent inordinate amounts of time attempting to install this software, carefully following the instructions provided by the installer. In every instance, after leaving the machine off for a day or so and rebooting, I am met with a splash screen that sits forever. Needless to say, I am extremely reluctant to repeat another day of software installation to only have to re-start with no assurances of success. Either I go back to ugly Ubuntu (which has always worked out of the box, by the way), or I look at other options. I was hoping to use SuSE, but I really don't care which distro is on that machine as long as it works and it provides TeX, R, Emacs, Scheme, and a few other software packages that I'm sure are of no interest to your customer base.

I have searched everywhere for the error I am getting which pertains to "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)" I came across this when I was trying to uninstall dovecot through apt. This is what I am doing:
Quote:
# apt-get --purge remove dovecot
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
[code]....
I have tried the following:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
dpkg -P courier-pop-ssl
dkkg --remove courier-pop-ssl
None of these seem to work in efforts to unblock what I am trying to ultimately do, which is uninstall dovecot.

I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.

I had problems with the system not reading the monitor EDID and have fixed the problem by adding an override file in xorg.conf.d and all of that seems to be working well (although the system has not failed to read the EDID since I implemented the override. go figure).
The thing that I am wondering about is something I see in the Xorg log file. At the end of the log file, after everything seems to be configured, there are six (6) identical blocks of information regarding the EDID and modeline settings. Is this normal or is X stuck in some kind of loop? Everything is working and I am not waiting an inordinate amount of time to log on, or after. Just curious. Here is the log file.

Trying simply to insert into table. Have succeeded in doing this but now want to correct user use of invalid characters. If I'm understanding correctly, Real-escape-string seems to correct these, so I've been trying to figure out how to use it. A short, test code version gives me a syntax error at INSERT VALUES, which--because it still has the single quotes in the text--tells me the real-escape-string didn't work. The code below gives me a parseing error with invalid $END at </body>.
Insert Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ' VALUES (UTC_TIMESTAMP,'What's happen' bra?')' at line 1 Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /home/powere15/public_html/DB/exercises_insert_record.php on line 94

I just installed Debian Jessie (3.16.0-4-amd64) on a desktop box I intend to use as a server in our home office. During installation I included the web server and SSH server options. I have a user account, 'mitchell' set up in addition to root. Everything is working great except that I am unable to log in via SSH from other machines, such as a Windows desktop also on the office LAN (using PuTTY). From the PuTTY terminal it looks like the user name is accepted because the password is requested, but after entering the password it says "Access denied".
Back on the Debian box in I see:
Code: Select allNov 26 14:12:02 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: Invalid user mitchell from 192.168.1.96
Nov 26 14:12:02 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: input_userauth_request: invalid user mitchell [preauth]
Nov 26 14:12:07 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): check pass; user unknown
Nov 26 14:12:07 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=rmbiserv.attlocal.net
Nov 26 14:12:10 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: Failed password for invalid user mitchell from 192.168.1.96 port 60010 ssh2
So I am guessing I need to set up either the SSHD server, or maybe something in PAM, to authorized users for SSH access?
As a note, "mitchell" is the user name I use to log on to Debian, and I am entering the same user name and password when trying to log in via SSH.
If I try to log in via SSH as "root" I get the following in the log:
Code: Select allNov 26 14:17:01 DebianDevP6TSE CRON[2329]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Nov 26 14:17:02 DebianDevP6TSE CRON[2329]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root

I'm using NetworkManager for networking. After a big Debian upgrade I had a new problem.Every boot it create a new (invalid) "eth0" connection, and NetworkManager connect automatically to it.As expected, the connection is invalid, and I'm not connection to the Internet.
What I do to fix this every boot is manually remove this wrong "eth0" connection and NetworkManager automatically connect to my good eth0 connection.
Note: If I boot my machine N times without deleting connections, I see N same and invalid "eth0" connections.I think this happen because /etc / network / interfaces conflicts with NetworkManager, but I don't know what trigger this. Here is my relevant configuration:
/etc/network/interfaces:
Code: Select all# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
[code]....
* No "/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/eth0" connection is created in configuration, but it's displayed.

I have Fedora 11 x86_64. I always apply all updates as soon as the Software Update applet announces them. I recall that there was an update for yumex recently to version 2.9.7. It is very nice because it now remembers the window size. But it used to display installed packages with the check box ticked. That feature seems to have disappeared. This makes it difficult when searching for something. For example, a friend who also has Fedora 11 was having difficulty with bluetooth. Since it is working fine for me I wanted to search on "bluetooth" to get a list of all packages that I have installed so he could be sure he had the same packages installed. I got a list of packages but there was no way to tell which were installed and which were not.
