I've got a matrox m9120 installed at 1280x1024 60hz but its really slow. You see the screen building up in blocks. And that's just in the standard screen. I don't run special software. Any tricks how to improve?
View 2 RepliesI'm planning on building a computer, to replace the ten-year-old workhorse I have at the moment. But I'm not all that knowledgeable about current hardware. The objectives are cheap and quiet. And of course everything needs to be Linux compatible.I have a few existing devices that I will want to use, and thus need support for. An IDE hard drive, IDE DVD Writer, PCI Wireless Adaptor, and PCI tv tuner card. The drives are the really important things, the PCI devices less so.
I'm in England, and I'm hoping to bring it in to a budget of �200-250.Usage is going to be web browsing including streaming media, watching video (though probably not HD),office work, maybe some light gaming, but probably the most demanding thing is GIS (Geographic Information Systems). I might want to try running stuff in virtual machines too.
For a processor, I'm thinking of an AMD Athlon II X3 435. Based on a magazine review, this seems to give the ideal price/performance ratio - anything more powerful means a bit of a jump in cost. Alternatively, I could go for a lower end processor and spend the money somewhere else instead. (More RAM is the obvious choice; would the ultra-cheap Sempron 140 and 4GB perhaps be better than the Athlon with 2GB?)
I want a motherboard with onboard graphics, and here's the first question: What's the Linux compatibility of onboard graphics like?. Most motherboards for AMD processors have ATI graphics, but there are some with nVidia chips. Which is better for Linux compatibility?
The second question: Is there much benefit buying any memory other than what's cheapest? I know there will be some performance differences, but are they worth worrying about in a budget machine? Also DDR2 is cheaper than DD3 now, but I expect in future that will reverse, so am I better off getting a motherboard that uses DDR3?
I've read that power supply quality is pretty important; an unreliable PSU can cause issues. And I'll also want to pay a bit extra to get something quiet, though I don't need fanless. Considering my choice of processor (TDP 95W) and other hardware (HDD, optical drive...that's about it), What power rating do you think I'll need?.
how (or what to use) to build a simple GUI on an embedded Linux system? I am using the Linux distribution Angstrom with a gcc compiler, and need to draw graphics on the screen. Preferably NOT in X11, but in a console only image. Are there simple graphics commands in C that will draw circles, boxes, and lines?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI initially installed Debian Lenny on my system but couldn't get sound to work so I upgraded to squeeze hoping that the newer kernel would somehow fix that. Unfortunately, the update caused the screen to flash on and off starting at the login screen - I'd get a split second with the screen on and then it would go off for a second or two. The boot screen still allows me to boot from Lenny's linux kernel, and that still works. I also had this problem when I installed ubuntu on this computer so after some searching around I remembered that adding radeon.modeset=0 as a boot option fixed this. Now the screen no longer flashes, but everything is really slow - I think that disabled graphics acceleration? After some searching around it seems that these problems are probably caused by something called KMS in newer linux kernels but I don't really know.
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to how I could turn on graphics acceleration again without having the screen flashing on and off? Or suggestions for making sound work? I think in the past (on ubuntu) I ended up having to enable the proprietary graphics driver, but on the other linux distros i've tried I used proprietary graphics and flash and my computer got slower and slower and started to crash, so I'd rather stick to the open source driver if possible - i don't need really need 3d acceleration. Stability is the reason I switched to debian. I've been using ubuntu on a new desktop for a couple of months, but i had an old HP that was given to me in my basement. It has 384Mb of ram, and thats because i had a 256Mb stick laying around. I installed debian becuase it is more suited for older hardware (at least from what I've read). It installed fine, but it boots to a blank screen, and pressing ctrl+alt+F2 bring me to the command line. I checked /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the driver to vesa, to find out my video card isn't even shown. I ran lspci and I found that it says my graphics card is Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 (CGC) Chipset graphics controller (rev3) In the device section of xorg.conf, it merly says Identifier"Configured Video Device"
View 12 Replies View RelatedThis happened when I was trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 from a disc, when I boot from the USB or CD I create of Ubuntu it gets past the selection menu and then I get stuck at this screen, keyboard is completely frozen, no HDD activity light or anything. This happened the same way when trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 This is an ASUS g60jx laptop, I would have assumed this was fixed by now, is their a special graphic mode I have to enter when installing?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem, so I boot in recovery mode. The Recovery Mode menu comes up, but when I press a cursor key, the purple Ubuntu screen comes up. I cannot get to the menu items that I need!
The recovery mode is supposed to provide a failsafe text-only environment.
Does anyone know what app puts up the purple screen?
I would really like to remove it. I tried to install xdm, which I prefer, but keep running into the purple screen. - With XDM installed, the purple screen comes up and blocks you from seeing anything. Fortunately, remote login by RDP still works. - If you switch console (CTRL+ALT+Fn) back and forth a few times, the purple screen appears again. You have to go to a new console (F8 or even F9 instead of F7) and begin a new Gnome session. Eventually you run out of function keys...
Perhaps I'm using the wrong distribution. Ubuntu is friendly, but you pretty much have to use it exactly as it installs. Can someone recommend a distribution that puts more emphasis on stability?
I have to use acpi=off because my PC is crushing/freezing during installation and 2 mins after boot up. Currently I'm using acpi=ht to enable second CPU.
The problem is that my Intel graphic card is slow and Xorg is taking a lot of CPU.
I'm also not able to enable compiz when disabling acpi. The biggest problem is the MythTV that is so slow in the menu area alone that I'm not watching any TV in it lately.
When I'm not, it's crushing, no CPU spikes, no strange behavior just crushing without any logs.
Ubuntu 8.10 was running well on the box.
I just manually updated my opensuse 11.2 installation. This update included the xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd driver from version 1.3.0_20091026 to 1.3.0_20100216. As a result now all graphics operations are very slow, eg. redrawing a large window takes around 1sec when moving it to another position. With the old driver is was very smooth. Vlc previously worked very well, now it is not possible to watch a video even with a low resolution. I use a Radeon HD 3200 GFX chip which is on the motherboard (Asus) and additionally I have a separate GFX card (Radeon 3870) in the PCI-E slot which I don't use on Linux - just for gaming on Windows.

I've tried to put it on 1680x1050 and it worked out well I guess but the graphics had become very slow. For example I have to wait 5 to 6 seconds to scroll from page to page in a pdf file. Minimizing a window takes also a lot of time. I have a NVIDIA card in my PC.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Suse Linux 11.2 and I had problem with graphics, when I moved windows there were many lines showing, I have installed an original driver for it and now instead of lines moving windows is very slow. When I try to activate compositing with flip with it gives an error and OpenGL does not work. Only XRender works and windows are faster but scrolling is still slow.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on a Dell Optiplex GX240, it has an ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF (from lspci output) and all the graphics run very slow (I'm assuming because OpenGL and hardware acceleration are disabled). I Googled the issue and found several solutions but non of them worked. I tried installing the ATI Catalyst driver but it doesn't recognize the graphics card. I also tried to install the fglrx drivers but when I run fglrxinfo I get a segmentation fault. So the X server is running with the open source (r128) drivers and it's really slow.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded (reinstalled) from Slackware 13.1 to 13.37 on an old iMac and have problems with slow graphics.

With Slackware 13.1 I had no KMS enabled and graphics speed was okay. It wasn't very good, but okay for everyday work. Now with 13.37 it's extremely slow. glxgears runs with only around 38 fps, no matter what I do. And every now and then when logging off, I get a black screen and no new kdm-login. But I can ssh into that machine and restart X by issuing 'init 3;init 4'.
KMS is enabled (I've also tried disabling it, but then KDE crashes right after logging in) and it's a fresh installation of 13.37 with a 2.6.37.6 kernel.
What can I do?
I have to admin I don't know this video and X stuff very well and I used to have machines with NVIDIA cards.
If there's anything else than the usual Xorg.0.log needed.

I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.

The debian 5.0.8 ppc cd (regular and xfce) say invalid no of allocation blocks when checked. And when burned and booted with DEBCONF_PRIORITY=low cant load all of the addiotinal installer components, and wont retry. Is the debian cd supposted to be like that or is that a problem with it, i tried burning it twice and it had errors loading installer components both times when i booted them. Are my cds just the problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI ordered a SuSE 11.4 installation DVD from an online Linux Distro distributer that I've used before with no problems. I did this rather than burn my own DVD from the website. I thought that I might perform a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 on this Dell 1420 Laptop that is currently running Ubuntu 11.04.
Note, this is a completely fresh install, not a side-by-side installation with Ubuntu; I followed the installation sequence that completely repartitions the entire disk for SuSE, and accepted all of the suggested options regarding logon, etc.
Everything goes well ... sort of. The first install didn't reboot correctly, i.e., the set-up that is supposed to run after the initial install never happened and I had to manually power-down the machine and restart from the "safe mode." Needless to say, that didn't work as expected. So, I re-install, from scratch, trying different options: for instance, instead of LVM, I decide to have an un-encrypted partition scheme and accept the "obvious" options ... thinking that the LVM options interacted badly with the install. Eventually I get the installation to proceed correctly, or so it appears: it goes though the entire sequence, including the re-boot, building the default image, etc.
I test this image by removing the DVD, power-cycling the machine, and all looks good, so I begin the process of installing software updates, etc. Being paranoid, I re-boot the machine, and all restarts correctly, etc.
Now here's the annoying thing. The next day, I power the machine on, and it locks at the splash screen. By the way, these are the exact symptoms that I experienced with the bogus/incomplete installations. The boot sequence proceeds up to the splash screen and waits forever.
So, in sum: I spent inordinate amounts of time attempting to install this software, carefully following the instructions provided by the installer. In every instance, after leaving the machine off for a day or so and rebooting, I am met with a splash screen that sits forever. Needless to say, I am extremely reluctant to repeat another day of software installation to only have to re-start with no assurances of success. Either I go back to ugly Ubuntu (which has always worked out of the box, by the way), or I look at other options. I was hoping to use SuSE, but I really don't care which distro is on that machine as long as it works and it provides TeX, R, Emacs, Scheme, and a few other software packages that I'm sure are of no interest to your customer base.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had problems with the system not reading the monitor EDID and have fixed the problem by adding an override file in xorg.conf.d and all of that seems to be working well (although the system has not failed to read the EDID since I implemented the override. go figure).
The thing that I am wondering about is something I see in the Xorg log file. At the end of the log file, after everything seems to be configured, there are six (6) identical blocks of information regarding the EDID and modeline settings. Is this normal or is X stuck in some kind of loop? Everything is working and I am not waiting an inordinate amount of time to log on, or after. Just curious. Here is the log file.

Just upgraded to Debian Jessie. I'm having a problem with the desktop and lockscreen that I never had before in Debian 7. Whenever I open the laptop to wake it up, there is very bad discoloration of the background. (screenshot : [URL] ..... )
Hardware is an IBM Lenovo T410 with no customizations. The graphics are factory nvidia. 3D acceleration works flawlessly, and I have no other issues except this background problem.

I have been meaning to do this for awhile. I have a relatively decent machine currently running FreeNAS, a BSD based NAS system. It works great as a NAS box, but now I want it to do more. I want it to act as a file server/NAS, also as a router for my home network, so obviously I will add a second ethernet port as well as wireless "N" capability. As a router, I want to have fine control over my home computers. And, I have a multiple camera security setup, using Motion, that I want to run on this machine 24/7. I know Motion doesn't take a huge amount of horsepower, since I am currently running it on an inexpensive laptop running Squeeze.
What I would like advice on is how some other people on this forum would accomplish this. FreeNAS works great for what it was designed for, as well as IPCop, but neither will do all that I want, so I plan to run Debian on it, most likely Squeeze, as it will soon be Stable.

Now,I am facing some issues to execute that .iso on Qemu(Virtual Interface),those are:
1. While builing it into an .iso,I skipped the md5sum step, is that mandatory to be built for making a live CD?
And when I am trying to make an MD5SUM using the following command, Its giving me the following error:

I would like to create some packages for programs that use the Git software to manage the source, I want to do this directly using the source code in the Git repo as the source code form the package. Does anyone have any hints or directions on how to do this? I been looking round the web for information about this, but all I seem to find is for about storing and build Debian packages from git, this is not what I want to do as these packages are for personal use and I have no need for this.
