Debian Configuration :: Invalid User Using SSH

Nov 26, 2015

I just installed Debian Jessie (3.16.0-4-amd64) on a desktop box I intend to use as a server in our home office. During installation I included the web server and SSH server options. I have a user account, 'mitchell' set up in addition to root. Everything is working great except that I am unable to log in via SSH from other machines, such as a Windows desktop also on the office LAN (using PuTTY). From the PuTTY terminal it looks like the user name is accepted because the password is requested, but after entering the password it says "Access denied".

Back on the Debian box in I see:

Code: Select allNov 26 14:12:02 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: Invalid user mitchell from 192.168.1.96
Nov 26 14:12:02 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: input_userauth_request: invalid user mitchell [preauth]
Nov 26 14:12:07 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): check pass; user unknown
Nov 26 14:12:07 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: pam_unix(sshd:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ssh ruser= rhost=rmbiserv.attlocal.net
Nov 26 14:12:10 DebianDevP6TSE sshd[2278]: Failed password for invalid user mitchell from 192.168.1.96 port 60010 ssh2

So I am guessing I need to set up either the SSHD server, or maybe something in PAM, to authorized users for SSH access?

As a note, "mitchell" is the user name I use to log on to Debian, and I am entering the same user name and password when trying to log in via SSH.

If I try to log in via SSH as "root" I get the following in the log:

Code: Select allNov 26 14:17:01 DebianDevP6TSE CRON[2329]: pam_unix(cron:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Nov 26 14:17:02 DebianDevP6TSE CRON[2329]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root

Debian Configuration :: Raspbian On Raspberry Pi Always Get A Invalid IP Address

Jan 7, 2016

I got the Raspberry pi 2 Model B. I flashed my sdcard with raspberian Jessie kernel 4.1 (latest). Also tried wheezy and NOOBS, same behavior. With a ethernet cable (known working), I tried connecting my Pi to my home router, and I got a invalid ip address 169.254.xxx.xxx, and therefore no linkup. I got the same results by connecting my Pi directly to my modem (wired).

I know that /etc/dhcpd.conf is the new /etc/network/interfaces for network configurations. So I tried the debug option, and I noticed that the router doesn't seems to response to the DISCOVER command from the Pi (dhcp v4 protocol). Here's a dump of by /var/log/syslog | grep dhcp

Code: Select allDec 28 12:00:02 raspberrypi systemd[1]: Starting dhcpcd on all interfaces...

Dec 28 12:00:02 raspberrypi dhcpcd[349]: eth0: disabling kernel IPv6 RA support

dhcpcd -k
dhcpcd eth0

eth0: using IPv4ALL address 169.154.202.224

Seems like my home router TP-link (default setup) doesn't send a response to the dhcp request.

Fedora :: Col: Invalid Or Incomplete Multibyte Or Wide Character

Dec 10, 2010

I make it a habit to review the logwatch reports regularly. I have been seeing this one from Anacron lately. I'm not sure exactly when it started, but it has been going on for a while now and started after the F13 to F14 upgrade. I have searched and tried to find out what it means, but have come up empty. This is the report:

[Code]....

Is this something that is just spurious and can be safely ignored? If this isn't, how do I go about fixing it?

General :: Invalid Or Incomplete Multibyte Or Wide Character?

May 13, 2011

I'm trying to backup an ext3-formatted disk to an external USB disk, also formatted in ext3.rsync repeatedly reports those kind of errors : rsync: recv_generator: failed to stat "<filename>" : Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character.Following Google, this is usually related to NTFS-formatted drives but it is not the case here.A lead to the solution could be that the folders and files being backuped are mapped through smbd. My smbd.conf file contains the following lines regarding charsets : #Dos charset = 850#Unix charset = ISO8859-1Since those lines are commented out, I believe this defaults to UTF-8.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Change File Names To Remove Invalid Character

Apr 1, 2009

I am trying to copy a large number of files from a Linux server to a Windows file share. Unfortunately, all of the files and folders I have to copy have 10 numbers followed by 2 colons "::" in the name (example: 1234567890::WordDoc.doc) which of course is invalid in windows naming conventions. So now I'm trying to come up with a way to change the file and folder names on the fly to replace the colons with a dash "-" or space " ". I'm even willing delete the frist 12 characters in necessary. I have tried cp, mv, tr, and several -bash scripts but get no positive results.

Programming :: Getting Error 'couldn't Compile Regular Expression Pattern: Invalid Character Range'

Nov 19, 2008

I'm having a bit of trouble with a regular expression I'm trying to write and I'm not sure if it's something Tcl specific or my lack of regexp understanding.

[Code]...

I get a number of strings passed to a proc in the format 3|x where x is a number, either 0 or within the range 5-12. My understanding is that that regexp will match the literal '3' followed by a '|', the escapes the special meaning of |, and then 0 or, because of |, a number within the range 5-12. However I'm getting the error 'couldn't compile regular expression pattern: invalid character range'.

General :: Revision Control Application For Personal-local Use?

Dec 19, 2010

I'm looking for an application which does what is commonly termed as Revision Control (RC). Here is the scenario: I have a directory holding numerous files and subdirectories, all belong to a project I work on. I routinely edit/update some files and wish to record `snapshots' of the entire directory so I can compare different revisions. Of course I can store a tarred version of the directory everytime I change something but this is immensely inefficient. So What I would like is to `upload' a snapshot into an archive file everytime I change something and then being able to `download' a snapshot later (for comparison/backup). Only I work on the project and I use a single machine so everything is local (no network connections).

My requirements are:
1. Being able to easily download/upload with one command an entire directory with all its files and subdirectories.
2. Any change to the directory induces a new version including renaming/moving files (even if their content hasn't changed)
3. The snapshot is aware of symlinks and saves them as such (and not as file they point to).
4. The files in a snapshot retain their original date when I `download' from the archive.
5. A GUI allows to easily navigate between stored snapshots and see which changes occurred.

I know you can specify the revision number, but I'm under the impression that if you specify a revision that exists, it increments .1 to the right.

So if current revision is 1.2 and i specify -r 1.2 it will make the revision 1.2.1

Ubuntu :: Frozen Panel - Messing Around With The Alternate Character Panel App And Made A Custom Character Set

Jun 12, 2011

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.

When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.
