Software :: Can't See Internally Hosted Website When Inside The Network
Feb 9, 2011
I am creating podcasts that I like to download to my android phone. I host the podcasts on my home webserver and use dyndns for the website when outside the network. However, when I type in my dyndns website from inside my network, it will not work.
I realize i can use the ip address to get to the site, but since I use beyondpod for my podcasts, it's all saved in settings. So what i'd like to be able to do is download the podcasts to my phone from either inside or outside the network.

My daughter wants to build a little website that looks a bit like a magazine for her family and select friends. Front page has links to stories or articles she'll write. She would also like to post some pictures for people to see and maybe have people add comments if they like. I'd like to host it locally on our home server and limit access with an id and password. I would use something like DYNDNS.com to point family and friends to our server where they could login. I have an Ubuntu Lamp server setup to install what we need.

I have just joined this respective forum and I have a issue with website hosted on Virtual Redhat Server. Scenario is like this I have three virtual redhat server(R1,R2,R3) 5.0 on VMware workstation 7.0 installed on window 7(physical machine), on R1 I have DNS server , On R2 I have Apache web server and I have hosted a website called "geekgadget.com" just for testing purpose, R3 is just a normal server nothing installed on it yet..
Problem : I can access my website [URL] from all of my three virtual redhat server but when I try to access it from some of my physical XP,window 7 machines as well as from virtual XP machine present on my local LAN, website cannot be accessed so I am not getting the point why it happens because I checked that my port 80 is listening.

we have a dual server setup: Windows server 2003 and Ubuntu 10.04 with apache installed with all the goodies. This is all virtualized. What I'm wanting to do, is make the new website we've created run on the Ubuntu machine, which it is, and be accessible outside the office. However, by doing this, we forfeit being able to use remote access or web exchange on Windows server 2003.
How can I create a link from the new website on Apache point to the internal server and it work outside of the office?

Where would I go to find a guide on a how-to for Linux website administration? I want to learn how to create a simple site dedicated to my blog. I already have a blog hosted by wordpress. I want to learn how to administrate my own blog using Apache hosted by GoDaddy.com or some other host.

Does anyone know if you switch networks Where you have your servers hosted on a Non-DHCP Network, and you switch your IP addresses, then do you have to switch change/assign your new gateway address? I'm not sure if its manually assigned? How do you do it? Also what about nameserver resolving?

I have set up a MythBox on Debian Lenny. I have a wireless connection using a Belkin USB WiFi Device. I am using ndiswrapper, wpa_supplicant, etc. I am using a static ip address. I have internet access without problems. However, if I try to ssh in or even ping my mythbox inside my network there is no connection. I have never had to do anything special to ssh into debian in my network before. I am confused that I have an internet connection but can't get a ping reply.

I've been researching this all day with no luck thus far. Basically I need to cutoff port 21/ftp access from IP addresses outside of my local network. My local IP range is something like 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.150 -- so anything outside of this range would automatically be blocked.
Any IP address outside of this range would be denied as I use SFTP for remote access, etc. from home, etc.
I've researched IP tables, tcp wrappers, etc. but am still unsure which would be best for what is probably a simple fix.
Relevant info: Vsftpd via Ubuntu Server 10.10

I am using NetBSD-5.1.1. I wanted to know what happens internally when we create a file in linux. ( In general )?The header file STDIO.H present in "src/include/stdio.h" contains a "FILE" structure with various members like _p, _cookie, etc.2. I wanted to know how does internally memory gets allocated for them.?

It's more just straight networking rather than Linux related - possibly a rather large gap in my knowledge.Been asked to set up a Linux firewall / router for a friend, and he wants an external address on his PC and his firewall. He's got a /30... ISP seem to think this is normal. My understanding was different router interfaces should be in different subnets when it comes to addressing. eg:
WAN 1.1.1.1LAN 192.168.1.1/24 (then PC 192.168.1.2)This is how I'd set up an enterprise router, and from memory how I had to regurgitate networking for my Cisco exams. But they would have been large devices within a BGP environment, how does this compare to home use? Can you have interfaces on the same router within in the same subnet? I'm looking for the real world answer - not my CCNA answer or the config addressing scheme I just blindly followed...Is this right or can different interfaces be in the same subnet? If they can be in different subnets How would you do that with an eternal 1.1.1.1/30? egWAN 1.1.1.1LAN (what IP?) then PC 1.1.1.2Would you actually just set the router up as a /29 and then use the additional IP addresses for the LAN NIC on the router? (yes I'm aware you couldn't route to where it had actually been allocated)
Then with that how do I route the 1.1.1.1/30? Which interface do I point it at? Even with a /29 I'd still have a routing issue right?Or are the ISP expecting you to do something with NAT / port forwarding. (and yes I could do this to get it working - but I want to understand it better) I'm asking the question here, because rather than just wanting a magic file to get things working, I'd actually rather understand the principles rather than just press a button and have it work.

I am connected to a network with free traffic inside it and post-paid outer traffic. So I need a way to be able to separately monitor the download traffic from inside and outside the network. All the solutions I`ve found for now offer monitoring of ALL up/down traffic.
So, I want to get separate statistics on these:
1 — 81.89.188.0/23, 217.197.9.0/24
2. — 81.89.186.0/23
3. — 81.89.178.0/23
4. — 81.89.176.0/23
5. — 81.89.180.0/24
9. — 217.197.12.0/24
[Code]...
UPD: I`m connected to the internet through the network`s gate, so all the traffic comes through eth0. I wish to separate traffic incoming from the IPs on top from all other traffic

I am not sure if this is a problem with my router or a problem with the fedora 12 server i am using.
- internal here means within my home network, external means from outside it.
I can access my server and webpage:
internally using http://192.168.0.192
externally using http://MYDNS___EXAMPLE.com
but I cannot access the server internally using http://MYDNS___EXAMPLE.com
This is a pain in the butt because I have all of my client software setup with an internal and external access point (ssh, proFTPd, http, MS Access database connected to MySql, etc.)

I have a 500GB WesternDigital Elements external harddrive and recently I plugged it into my computer and noticed the green light on the power adapter didn't light up anymore. I'm assuming that the power adapter failed - is this a fairly safe assumption? I know it COULD be something else, but does this at least make sense to move forward?Coincidentally, I've been researching new externals to order a 1.5TB because the 500GB is full.
I'm contemplating two options:
1.) Replace the power supply for ~$40
2.) Take apart the external and mount it internally
If it is in fact the power supply it might be the best option to just replace the thing and have 2 externals for backing up data on. But if it turns out to not be the power supply I'm out $40.I'm not sure how taking apart the external and install the hard drive in a desktop computer would be. Is the harddrive a standard drive? Does it have all the same power cords a normal computer would? If so, I could just install it into my brother's desktop and retreive the data that way (and he'll have an extra 500GB hdd).

Ever since switching to openSUSE 11.1, I have been having problems with certain websites (using the version of Firefox that came with openSUSE 11.1). Some website's CSS code won't load until repeated reloads - for example, wachovia.com. I'll visit the website and it will be all distorted because the stylesheets did not load, and I will have to refresh a number of times before it becomes usable. Other website's images won't load until multiple refreshes, like facebook.
Is this an openSUSE issue? An openSUSE interaction with Firefox issue? I've never had this problem on XP or Ubuntu.

So I keep reading that bonding ethernet devices is supposed to be easy. I have followed several tutorials and tried a few things on my own, and I can't seem to get it right. I currently have a setup that allows me to ping internally on my network, but when I try to ping externally I get the error:
connect: Network is unreachable
Before I bonded the interface my connection worked fine. Here are my config files. I am running centos 5.3 on a virtual machine.

I know that you can access and run any script of the web by wget:
Code:
wget mydomain.com/page.php
But this is literally accessing it externally through the web, i think that it is safer and faster to access the script internally. I am using lighttpd to host my php pages, and is there a way to do that? I have had some hosting experiences, the cronjobs on the hosts let u input:
Code:
* * * * * php /public_html/path/page.php

I have a firewall/router box running openSUSE 11.2 between the outside world and the LAN. This router also provides DNS for the LAN and has SuSEfirewall enabled. LAN users need (almost) full access to the internet. However, I want to block certain sites which are not required for work (you name it: facebook is my candidate). What is the most elegant way to block certain sites (which have quite a lot of different IP numbers) ?

I have tested the networks at several schools in the area, and at the town hall. It is not possible to surf on www on any of these networks using a PC running Linux. My conclusion is that there has to be some kind of filtering of traffic that exclude PC's running Linux.
From the same PC I can send and receive email,I can ping and trace (mtr) addresses on www, and I can view webpages that are on servers on the inside of the filtering-gateway. The filter used is InterScan Web Security Virtual Appliance from TrendMicro I have also demonstrated for the admins at the town hall that using Linux-PC on a "clean" network, surfing is no problem. By doing these small tests I have demonstrated that Linux is not the problem.
Tomorrow I'm going to visit the network providers admins, so that they could see what happens when a PC running Linux tries to access www. What kind of things should I test to document, or find the problems? So far I have just used MTR to document slow respons, wget --no-proxy to document that www hangs and ends time out, ifconfig to show NiC settings, and route...
The network provider is the same company that refused to turn on IMAP on the exchange servers, resulting in 3 week without mail at our school. All the other schools had to upgrade Outlook in order to connect to the new exchange-server with MS MAPI settings.

I was saddled with the job of maintaining my department's website (I work at a college). When I still used windows I would access my department's folder on the web server using the following procedure: (in windows XP) go to the start menu > click 'run' > enter the folder address, I would be prompted for my login and password. The folder, and the whole server in fact, would then be visible in the windows file browser, under the 'networks' icon. I could then navigate to my department's folder and modify the files I need to to update the website.
How do I do this in Opensuse (using Gnome). I tried going to 'network' in nautilus and then 'open location' but no luck. I also tried 'connect to server' in nautilus (in the 'file' menu), but again no luck. which I could stomach if my college provided reliable access to computers on campus, but they don't so I have to use my laptop, which is now windows free . My current job is only going to last for a few more months, so having only so recently got rid of windows I am reluctant to re-install it just for this purpose (which is just about the only reason I currently have for using windows - the other is being able to download audiobooks from the public library, but that's another matter).
