I have configured a samba server where I have configured it for /mnt dir to be exported/shared. When I verify this share, I see mnt dir but I want the content inside the mnt to be visible or chroot into mnt directly.
View 6 RepliesI'm trying to share some folders over the network, but the shared folders are not visible on another computer. This is through double clicking my computer from the Network list in Nautilus. However, I can access the share by typing the full address(<computer name>/<share name>) in "File > Connect to Server...".Since I can't type the address manually from my blu-ray drive, I need to get the shares to show on the network. What is wrong with my settings?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI setup a debian home server some time ago and have successfully setup samba so my windows machines can access them and upload/download data off it.I have setup opensuse on this desktop and after allowing smb through the firewall I now seem to have read only access to the smb shares.I am using the same username and password as I do on my windows machine, so in theory smb server should see my username and password and allow me read/write, like it does in win7. Is this correct?
Having just thought about it I think samba is just a tool to get shares working between linux/windows and macos.Is samba even the best tool for linux - linux sharing? how do I get read/write access to my shares in opensuse?or do I use another program to see my shares?I'm a bit new to this linux- linux sharing so I apologies.
He has a Samba 3.2 server on openSUSE 11.1. It worked fine with XP and Vista as a PDC. There are no NT servers on this office LAN. Now he has a W7 computer, and he was not able to sign on. From searching, it seems that an upgrade of Samba and a tweak of the registry are required. He did the upgrade to 3.5 from a supplementary openSUSE repo and restarted the server. But it seems he cannot sign on yet. I don't know if he did the registry tweak, I'm waiting to hear back.

My question is: He seems to be under the impression that Samba 4 is required to work with W7, but that M$ article seems to contradict him. Has anybody got W7 working with Samba 3 as a PDC like in XP and Vista? I can't find any FAQs about this.
I have setup an dhcp server wich allows ICS, and a samba server as a PDC. I can access the shares from windows if I type the server Ip (ej. \192.168.0.1), however if if write the address (ej. \dbaserver) I cannot access them.If I type ping dbaserver on a command prompt, it returns 127.0.0.2 not 192.168.0.1, what could be wrong. I asume because of this I cannot join the domain also.

I tried to have him ping my ip and that wouldn't even work. I'm confused and wondering why it doesn't work. We share a lot of files and this would make both of our lives much easier.

I have steup samba shares on my Susi pc. I get to the point where the server asks for a password for the user I have on the Susi box but when I enter the password it fails to connect. tried to add the user, password and enabled the user in the samba conf file. But not sure where it should appear I give below the smb.conf file:

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedContinuing with my assigned task of migrating the company's PCs to GNU/Linux (openSUSE as server for GNU/Linux clients) I managed to set up a DC with roaming profiles for the few remaining Windows users, user validation and login for the openSUSE boxes and a few network shares with different rights. I know there are no roaming profiles for GNU/Linux and I can live with that but I would like to specify wich users/groups would have their home directories saved locally (notebook users) and which will save them on the Samba server.
By default home directories are saved locally but somehow Samba creates a minimal home directory for each user under /home in the Samba server. How can I tell the client box to use that directory? and how can I set up the few notebook users to save it on their disks? Maybe using the options under Yast > Security... > Users and groups management > Users (LDAP Users filter) > and then select the user and use the "Manage Samba account parameters" plug-in for specifying the different paths cant achieve this.

My Computer options arent great, but i am going to be starting the process of switching all the computers in my house to linux, i wanted to see if i could make a server to connect all of them for file sharing, but mostly for world of warcraft in the house.it would only be 10 computers accessing it at once. i would basically want to know what the best form of linux would be, the programs id need to have, if it could be done on a desktop based machine, or if id have to use my server. if i would need different hardware or if the linksys hardwired router going to be enough connection. i guess the filesharing would be more the pressing need, especially if it is possible to create a server and convert the connected computers to linux through use of the server

last friday my schools isp enabled iwsva - interscan web security virtual appliance from trendmicro. all traffic is now filtered, and slowed down. videos and other videostreams are now useless. after this we have had serious problems using our netbooks with ubuntu, and upgrading workstations with ubuntu has become very problematic, or almost impossible. i have to run the update process 6-8 times before all packages are updated.
what can i do to document the problem in a good way. the isp tells me that there are no problems, and that it has to be a linux problem. (ever heard that one before?) the ltsp-clients on my debian servers does not have the same problems, maybe because they are using the proxy on this server?
My Suse 11.4 wired network is not displayed in the bottom panel inside of my networkmanager. I can connect to the internet It just shows a red box with a white x inside near my clock is there anyway to get this working?

What I am trying to do with the server is use it for caching to speed up our network t but I don't want to go around to all the our customers to setup their browser for proxy. What all is involved with making this server completely transparent. So the end user will does not need to enter in proxy information.

The network path was not found'. Even username@server does not work.Mi auth type in the Samba server is "user", and the auth config at my ubuntu client is also userJust in case.. when I type smbclient -L //SERVER -U username, it shows me the home folder ok.
i'm trying to set up samba so that i can connect to the printer in the den since we have wireless access. also, i can see my virtual box on the windows xp home ed desktop, but can't access it.so, how do i go about setting up samba so stuff is visible between my ubuntu machine and my families windows orientated network? i'm having a hard time finding anything on videos too. i'm taking a break from the remastersys stuff so i can get the more important things done, such as connecting my ubuntu machine to my families windows network. i don't know if the printer is wireless or not, but regardless, i can't find it.

On the Server PC, I have the printer working, I have set it to shared, and I have set the server setting to Publish shared printers. I can see and use the printer fine from a windows PC.
On my Ubuntu Client PC, I have samba installed, including smbclient, and all other samba components I can think of. I can see other computers on my home workgroup (Windows and Ubuntu fine). I can also add a printer connected to my windows PC. However I cannot find the printer connected to the other ubuntu PC.
I see the instruction in the Samba guide saying
"Now enter your Ubuntu Samba Print Server (set up as above) IP address in the box on the left titled "smb://"."
However I do not have fixed ip addresses, so what am I supposed to enter in the box. If I enter nothing I can browse the network and can see the host computer, but the printer is not displayed. I can also see the printer connected to the windows PC. How do I 'see' the Ubuntu printer?

However all the clients can login, browse other systems except for those which are not listed in the network neighborhood. I have attached the smb.conf file for reference.

I want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?
I have ubuntu server 10.4 installed on an Intel SS4200-E, which I have configured without any RAID. This machine acts as a media server to another PC. The other PC runs Windows 7 Ultimate. I have 3 1TB hard disks connected to it, and the file system on all the 3 are NTFS. I have mounted the hard disks as ntfs. I have made the folders on all the 3 hard disks shareable. I have configured Samba to make the folders on the hard disks "visible".
The ubuntu machine is in a headless configuration (it doesn't have any VGA card where can connect a monitor). I can configured SSH on it, so I can use putty from the Windows machine to logon to the ubuntu machine, but it is text based only. I am able to see all the 3 disks from the Windows machine. I am able to read/write into 2 of the disks. I am able to read, copy and delete from the 3rd disk, but not write new content to it.

I can access this folder with my other ubuntu computer connected trough LAN.The question is if anyone have my IP address can he/she access to my shared folder?Are samba shared folders shared over internet too?
