Software :: Apache2 Module File System Permissions?

I'm doing a custom version of mod_musicindex, but can't get the cache to write like it's supposed to.example cache file: /tmp/testing/cacheNow, normally I think setting the dir testing and file cache to www-data:www-data would be enough. Permission denied. I tried 666 as well, figuring why not. Permission denied.777 works, but thats pretty far out there...Am I using the wrong user/group? I figured apache modules would run as apache.Do I need to use 777? 700 or 744 don't work, which is making me think it's not running as apache...

I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

/dev/sda3 /windows ntfs-3g defaults,nosuid,nodev,umask=000 1 0
Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

The default Server root of the apache2.conf is "etc/apache2". But the actual "It works!" file is in /var/www/apache2-default
I edit the apache2.conf file the Server root line then restart the scrip at /etc/init.d/apache2
But the webpage still point to "It works!"
Anyone have idea how to change the Document root?

I'm needing to allow apache2 to make modifications to iptables and tc based on my cgi scripts. How can I allow apache2 to interact with these and only these commands?
Additionally, I want apache to be able to read and write files to a specific folder on the disc; what permissions are required for this also? Currently I am getting this error when calling /sbin/iptables Insecure $ENV{PATH} while running with -T switch

I just installed apache2 server on my ubuntu 10.04. It works fine (i get the "that works" page when i access to http://localost/ and get no errors or warnings when i start apache.However, the localhost/~florian returns a 404 not found.I've enabled the userdir module

I am trying to compile a C++ source file into a static library using make with root privileges (i.e., using "sudo"). However, I "sometimes" get the following compilation error:

I checked /home/project/ether/src folder to see if packet-ethernet.o in fact does not exist, and saw that it is actually located there, but its owner is "root", which is different from the current user. If I change the owner of packet_ethernet.o from root to the current user using "chown" command and execute make again with sudo, everything seems to be fine.
It may be a coincidence that I recently migrated to 64-bit platform from 32-bit, and then installed libboost-filesystem1.40-dev. After that, I began to experience such errors. I have "never" come across such a compilation error before. Even though I completely removed libboost-filesystem1.40-dev afterwards to see if it causes the problem, nothing changed.
After migrating to 64-bit and installing libboost-filesystem1.40-dev, my application exhibited another "weird" behaviour such that it produced "hidden" files using mkdir() system call, which were previously created as regular ones on the filesystem. Can compiler options that I use cause such problems? Is it possible that libboost-filesystem1.40-dev overwrote some system libraries so that I am getting such errors ?

I've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.

can assign permissions on a partition with ntfs as the file system. I am aware of editing fstab and setting some basic permissions. What I am clumsily dictating is can you edit permissions of individual folders for specific users in Linux. I have already tried chmod and such

I had a major raid event recently which caused my Ubuntu 9.04 server to recover part of its file journal on the system partition. This caused some of the file permissions to go all funny and I now need to change them manually.
What the file permissions should for the following folders:
/etc/
/home/
/lost+found/
/mnt/
/root/
/sbin/
/srv/
/tmp/
The server is running and I fixed the some of the ownership issues already. I use a basic LAMP setup with samba, and proftp.

I have the cowon iAudio7 music player with vfat file system and increasingly running into permission problems when I try to delete files. Unsurprisingly I am now running out of space. I am figuring if I could somehow mount it onto a folder in my home partition I will have full permissions. The problem is the drives name which is exactly with space: So even if try to delete files in the terminal I don't know how to cd into:

I want to simply mount an ext4 file-system onto a normal mount point in Ubuntu (/media/whereever), as read-writable for the current logged-in user, i.e. me.
I don't want to add anything into /etc/fstab, I just want to do it now, manually. I need super-user privileges to mount a device, but then only root can read-write that mount. I've tried various of the mount options, added it into fstab, but with no luck.

I think the problem is in the command perl Makefile.PL --with-apache2-apxs=/path/to/apache2/bin/apxs in section .../path/to/apache2/bin/apxs . What does mean ./path/to/apache2/bin/apxs? Maybe I should write the path to apache2 which contains a file named apxs? I did not find such file apxs. My apache2 path is /etc/apache2, but there is no file named apxs... i installed firefox 4 and removed the old 3.X version. did a general update that my computer showed me was available then i noticed the first problem. firefox 4 would not launch when i clicked it, it would only launch when i clicked the gnome 3 applications button and then clicked and dragged the firefox logo to the desktop, then it opened. the second problem i am now having which at the moment is more bothersome is that after i closed the lid to my laptop and opened it up again after a while and logged back in and noticed that the ENTIRE gnome 3 environment was gone. no panel no menu nothing just the desktop and a few desktop icons. i tried the command "yum install gnome-shell" but it just sed that gnome 2.31.5-7 .fc14.i686 was already installed so it wasnt gonna do anything, then i tried the "gnome-shell --replace" command and it just said

I have apache2 on my system, and it stopped working since the router was messed with (not by me). I removed apache2 and deleted /etc/apache2, but if I install apache2 it doesn't bring the files back. I want to password protect say a subdirectory, or a subdomain via vhost, with a username/password, but use the systems users and passwords as logins -> I want go avoid any and all .htaccess... as everyone should be doing anyway How would I go about doing this? I know my way around the apache configs fairly well, so I'm not a total newb -> I now I can use .useraccess and .pwaccess but that's flat file driven, not based off of the systems users/passwords.

I am working on Apache2, and am up to the 'test' phase of the process. I accidental sent the apachectl file to acapche2 instead of apache2:
[rootlocalhost sbin]# mv apachectl /acpache2
I should have done: mv apachectl /usr/local/apache2/bin
That didn't happen..
I echoed ; echo ./apachectl
./apachectl
Sooo, I know its alive, just have no idea where, help? I need to get this file back to start the HTTP Sever.

I am trying to access log file which located in /etc/log/apache2. I could get into the directory using `su`. I was able to run ls command under the directory and everything was file. I could run a command,
ls -d /var/log/apache2/*
However after I switched to my account, I got an error. sudo ls -d /var/log/apache2/* ls: cannot access /var/log/apache2/*: No such file or directory
I want to use this command in a bash script to get a list of log files. Should I write the script as root and run it as root?

I have a LAMP server set up (under Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit), and have a PHP application running on the Apache2 server. I copied the "default" website setup, and created a new one with the root at "/home/kota/WebRoot/".
When running my PHP application though, I come across a major issue: The script doesn't seem to be able to modify any files that are currently on the system, or create new ones.
However, this limitation is restricted to when running through Apache2. In other words, if i run it by typing "php5 myapplication.php" from the terminal, it works without a flaw. This leads me to believe that there is a permissions issue, disallowing Apache2 to create and modify files anywhere on my system.
Although it shouldn't make much of a difference, here is the basic information that I feel I should provide:

Whenever I type in my IP address or local domain name in my browser (http://myipaddress), my entire directory tree shows up in the browser. Normally I would not mind this behavior but I am networking my main computer through a router and if anybody within the range of the router types in my IP address in their browser (using their computer), I think they too will be able to access every file on my computer. How do I disable this?
I am running Linux Mint 9 (based on Ubuntu Lucid) and Apache2. I would rather just be limited to using Nautilus to connect to the HTTP server using a password.

I want to back up an entire Linux system on a 3Tb external Western DIgital USB3 drive.
I do not want to reformat it from what it is, apparemtly NTFS.
Is there a utility that can act like a file manager like mc, that will permit me to create an ever expanding (to 320Gb) TAR file that will retain all the original file permissions. I have had nothing but disappointment with Linux backup utils with a FAT32 external drive, and I am concerned if I just try an tar the entire drive at once, with around 3 million files, I might run out of memory.

I've just moved on to 10.04 from 9.10. The program worked fine in 9.10. I *may* have overwritteen a conf file in the upgrade...
I now get the error as below:
My userdir.conf is like this:

and I have the PHP5 module installed. I vaguely recall that I may have had PHP4 installed - would the upgrade have removed it? Is there anywhere I can get it from to try? Anything else to do?
