Ubuntu :: Laptop Freezing On Extended Operations Involving The File System / Hard Drive
Oct 4, 2010I have a Toshiba laptop that seems to be freezing on extended operations involving the file system/hard drive. (that's kind of a guess on my part). The system has frozen during the last day or two when I:
- try a large file operation with Nautilus
- try exporting a large video file from Kdenlive
- try formatting the disk for a new install of Maverick (I decided that with the new version almost out, I might try upgrading in case I broke my system)
What I see is the screen freezing and the mouse does not move. As I said, I tried installing the Maverick RC from the Alternate CD (I wanted to do a minimal install). The install hung on the partitioning step and the caps-lock key started blinking (though I don't get this in other cases). I have booted into my Lucid live-cd and a Puppy live-cd to try Gparted, with the same results - the system freezes (but the caps-lock key doesn't blink). Puppy HAS performed better generally, for example I was able to complete my large file operation (backing things up!) but it is freezing on the partitioning step.

Mar 8, 2011internal system mail revealed an error. Part of the mail is the below:

i have check /etc/pam.d/system-auth for the "ccount" entry, but it does not exist. "ccount" existed before in /etc/pam.d/system-auth but i managed to change it back to "account." i have grepd for the "ccount" string in all files under /etc/pam.d and i was not able to find it.
it seems that the system-auth is not able to take the now "account" string insted of "ccount" altough i have restarted crond
here is my system-auth file on the affected server:

Security :: How To Set Iptables For IPSec Tunnel?
Jan 7, 2010I want to setup firewall protection with iptables to support IPSec tunnels. That is, the firewall will drop anything from any host if it is not from an established IPSec tunnel. And it will accept anything (any protocols) if it's from an IPSec tunnel.
That is, I need also to open up ping to make ping work. But if I open up icmp, I cannot prevent pings from hosts that's outside my IPSec tunnels. This defeats my purpose.So if my purpose is to allow "anything" within the tunnel and disallow/drop anything outside the IPSec tunnels, how should I setup the iptables rules?
Security :: Ipsec Not Working Between Two Hosts?
Nov 3, 2010I've set up two security associations(in and out) on two hosts, and then set up two policies per host that should filter traffic to those SA's. Yet when I try to ping one host from the other I get no response, meaning that the filters on one side work and drop unprotected packets, but both hosts are configured to communicate using ipsec. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Mar 31, 2010HD operations indicator-lite flashes every second, on all my hd's..? What is the OS doing?.. Is this a security breach?.. Does this mean that my files are being uploaded at about 10K per second..? Or is this just a software checking status every second..? What does what, that engages the hd every second..?

Aug 6, 2010As part of the project I'm working on, I need to set up a server with IPSec authentication only connections to a large number of low bandwidth clients. I'm making use of the PF_KEY interface to populate the keys on the server and while prototyping things I've found that the initial setup is taking longer than I had expected. At the start of my test, entries are being added to the database at a rate of around 30/second, but as time goes on this is dropping significantly. I ran a test up to around 100k entries and by then the rate had dropped to 10/second. It's key to me that if I reboot my server that the Security Associations can be repopulated in a very short period, so I do genuinely need this to be much faster.
Two questions:
1) Does anyone have any experience of running with a large number of SAs set up, and if so what sort of setup rate did you get?
2) Are there things I can do to speed up the provisioning of these SAs? I'd really like to see a rate in the thousands per second.
We've been doing the prototyping on the 2.6 kernel.
Fedora Security :: Setup IPSEC Encryption Between Two Boxes?
Jun 25, 2011I have been trying to setup IPSEC encryption between two linux boxes. I have a server application which runs on Linux Box A and a client application which runs on Linux Box B. The client sends the data to server. I have captured wireshark logs at both server and client end. In the wireshark logs I can see that the Box B send ESP packets to the Box A.
But the server Application running at Box A is is not able to get any packets. If I turn the policy off at Box B, Box B sends normal UDP data packets to Box A, but still the Server Application running at box A doesn't get any packets.( Expected behavior since policy at Box A enforces that all packets coming from Box B should be encrypted.)
If I turn the policy off at Box A and Box B both, the server application receives the unencrypted data which is also expected behavior. But when the policy is turned on at both the boxes the encrypted packets reach the Box A but are not delivered to the server application. If anyone has faced such issue please help me to debug this issue. I have attached the ifconfig and policy settings at Box A and Box B for your reference.

Ubuntu :: Disk Operations Freeze System
Jun 19, 2010When I do some copying of files, or any background disk activity with file reading (transcoding a movie, uploading a big file to FTP, virus scanning) all computer becomes so slow, that I hardly can move my mouse, not to mention any productive use. I have SATA HDD, and Intel Quad CPU. I took measures to be sure it is not CPU or memory resource problem. Gentoo, Fedora, Windows don't freese that much on file reading. It is not a filesystem problem, or HDD, cuse I tried exactly this partition with other OSes.
Nice has a minor effect, but is is not enough, and I can't always start Nautilus with another nice level when I want to copy a file. What can I do to lower the priority of disk operations globally, and make apps to share disk thoughtput equally, not the one to occupie the disk until it finishes?

Feb 20, 2010I'm doing a custom version of mod_musicindex, but can't get the cache to write like it's supposed to.example cache file: /tmp/testing/cacheNow, normally I think setting the dir testing and file cache to www-data:www-data would be enough. Permission denied. I tried 666 as well, figuring why not. Permission denied.777 works, but thats pretty far out there...Am I using the wrong user/group? I figured apache modules would run as apache.Do I need to use 777? 700 or 744 don't work, which is making me think it's not running as apache...

May 16, 2010Sometimes while using Open Office, trying to open a file the dialog box takes 15 to 30 seconds of spinning balls until it shows me anything. Then changing a directory takes another 15 to 30 seconds. Visual feedback on selections take several seconds, and often I find myself a couple of subdirectories down from where I wanted to go due to caching of unacknowledged clicks.
My system is usually very, very fast, as one would expect from the specs. This problem happened, well, almost all the time with kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, now it just started happening again with 2.6.32-22-generic.During these slowdowns, opening Dolphin reveals the same problem, exceedingly slow response. While this is happening, top shows the system is not busy, and the hard disk light is not flashing. Idle is over 90% and user and sys are basically nothing. The system is basically doing nothing while making me wait.

Sep 3, 2010Whenever I move files from a USB memory stick or external hard drive or any other such device the file only seems to transfer 99% of the data and often during moving file operations will freeze and an offer of 'force quit' will come up (although file operations will eventually vanish with the 99% of the file being moved).
Can anything be done to rectify problems with file operations?

I couldn't even use Pidgin, Mozilla, or anything, when trying to open up another Terminal it froze as well.

Oct 19, 2010I am trying to create a self extracting file for Windows from Ubuntu 10.04 using 7zip.
I tried these commands:
7zr -sfx7z.sfx a output.exe *.txt
7zr -sfx/usr/local/etc/7z.sfx a output.exe *.txt
Both show this error:
Error: can't find specified sfx module
System error: E_FAIL
I have all the .sfx modules on /home/username/.sfx/ because I use them previously with "rar" and it worked fine, but it's not working for 7zip. I also copied 7z.sfx to /usr/local/etc/ to test the second command like shown here but I get the same error.
