May 28, 2011I have just installed Slackware 13.37. After the install - when executing startx for the first time, the xfce desktop freezes when its almost (?) fully loaded.
While loading I can move mouse and if I hit caps_lock the lamp at the keyboard turns on and off.
In the setup I choosed to use vesa - allthoug I afterr that even tried to boot from lilo into vga-mode.
I am, a litle rusty after have been brainwashed through Ubuntu for a few years (sigh) - so I really am not sure which config-file I should edit, and xorg.conf seems to be empty.
Slackware :: Vim Freeze At Startup When In Ssh Session
Jan 16, 2011I have been using vim for years without problem but today I have met one weird scenario which I can't solve it after troubleshoot for the whole day and google around. This happen to my 2 machine at home which both installed with Slackware 13.1..I just got my laptop done setup with Slackware 13.1 and I ssh from my laptop to my desktop that have vim installed. I use one of my laptop virtual console to do the ssh login to that desktop.
And using vim in that laptop virtual console and Konsole itself, all works fine. The problem only occur when I ssh into the desktop using a virtual console.It seems like if I supply the vim specifically a .vimrc, it will work fine. It seems like it's taking forever to find the .vimrc file. But if I remove that .vimrc, it will also freeze. If I create a new user in that desktop and ssh again and then do vim, it will also freeze.Any one face this strange problem before ? I know I can still use Konsole to ssh and do vim, but I wish to solve this and since vim is been there for so long, I think this problem will most likely faced by someone before.
Slackware :: Xfce Automount Usb Drive At Startup?
Jan 2, 2010I've googled this many times but have not found a solution yet. Can you get external usb hard drives to automount at xfce startup? They automount if I plug them in once xfce is started. I have them connected at boot I get an icon for the drive which I can then mount. But I wonder if I can get them to automount at startup

May 22, 2015I downloaded and installed the debian 8 ppc netinstall on my powerbook G4. upon the option of which desktop environment I wanted, I de-selected debian desktop environment (I only selected printer and utilities.) After finishing the install I am prompted with terminal. I logged in and did the following:

after reboot the login screen pops up. I log in, and a terminal pops up over the login screen. I think the issue is startx is not working?

Aug 24, 2010I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

Jan 28, 2010Thing is : I have an Install DVD created from current with the script from AlienBob about two months ago, I use it as my "default" Slackware64 13 install.
I had my drivers working ( KO modules loaded in kernel 2.6.29.6 ) I had to build for Broadcom Wireless and Nvidia GPU. Today I decided to make an upgrade w slackpkg, blacklisted kernel kernel headers, and everything pertaining to it. Still the damn thing installed 2.6.32.x. anyway, ran lilo to take notice of the change, and rebooted. booted allright, only when i Init 4, it failed to startx. new kernel, new mods needed to be loaded, i picked my DVD with drivers, and tried to run the Nvidia proprietary installer...
It uninstalled the previous driver and started compiling a new kernel module..I had the previous DVD installer of Slackware64 Current, as well as my private repo of packages, either built by me with src2pkg or makepkg, or from slackbuilds, I had my /home partition mounted apart, so i regenerated my system in about one hour...

May 30, 2010i can't use kde because the startx and xorgsetup commands are not found (from root account). i know i installed x and kde, documentation doesn't say anything about specifying a path, locale and whereis don't show a path. what should i do?
edit: it also isn't found in /usr/bin/X11R6 or /usr/bin or /usr/bin/X11

Jun 30, 2010Whenever I try to run startx as a regular user it sometimes executes and at other times it fails. I have to manually restart my machine. When it does execute, the window manager loads, but eventually freezes, and again, I have to reboot.

Nov 10, 2010I'm running Slackware 12.2 with wmii-3.9.2 as my window manager. My problem is that after startx wmii sometimes becomes unresponsive i.e., can't open xterm or any other program or even quit. have to use Ctrl+Alt+BkSpc.
"$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep (EE)" returns nothing. Though after quitting X I often see XIO error 11 (resource temporarily unavailable) but I don't know if this was caused by killing X. Graphics card is nVidia ION. I'm using the latest and recommended driver from [URL](260.19.12). //for xorg.conf see at the bottom
It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue as all the hardware is working properly (dmesg reports nothing suspicious). /var/log/messages reports nothing unusual (except for some acpid messages but that's probably another story).
I suspect it's something to do with my xorg.conf and/or the DISPLAY variable and/or wmii (because Xfce4 does not freeze). echo $DISPLAY returns :0.0 but this value is set by startx/xinit anyway. So I'm lost at this point.
My xorg.conf is:

Ubuntu :: Random Freeze On Startup ?
May 27, 2010This has been confusing me for a while. It usually takes about 4 or 5 times of hitting the power button for it to start up to the login screen. All it does is go to the Ubuntu splash screen and that's it. The colored dots don't change or anything. It just sits there. I ran the memory test to be sure it wasn't RAM and it ran fine.
System specs:
OS: 10.04
CPU: E8400
GPU: 9600GT
Hard drive: 250 GB Seagate
RAM: 2 GB
Mobo: 780i SLI FTW

Aug 22, 2010I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

Jan 25, 2011I was over in the Desktop forum yesterday and apparently 'event sounds' are available for Xfce and are part of the original package, but I've never seen them made available, that is, the switch to turn them on isn't where it is suppose to be, in any Slackware specific package of Xfce.I've used 4.61 that came with Slackware64 13.1, 4.61 from the Salix depository, 4.62 from Mr. Workman, 4.62 from 'current' and recently 4.8 from Mr. Workman. None of these make the 'event sounds' available.

I was able to click on a short-cut on my desktop , and my mouse came back. I can't open any thing except VirtualBox. I've just installed all of the packages in disks 1 and 2 of the slack 12.0 distro so, among them, I have the slack series kde/ installed. I run xfce as the desktop environment, which is able to run KDE apps. In main menu>Network there is kget, a download manager and also supposedly a p2p client. I ran it and it said "It is the 1st time you run kget. Do you want to make the default download manager?". I replied "No". As nothing happened I restarted X (the startx command ends up running xfce), ran kget again, and it made the same question, which this time I answered in the affirmative.
Again nothing happened. So I tried to download some file from the web, in the hope that a kget window would open. But no window opened nor anything else happened! In the console, I did 'ps -e' and there it was, however. So I began the search for documentation. First I ran khelpcenter, and was presented with the kget help. It was all about menus. However, typing kget --help-all in a console, gives almost two screens of information. And I tried several commands, from the GUI, following the syntax displayed by this command, but it was no use. So, I finally had to fall back on LQ, like so many times.

1. I start the computer and after startx I got black screen, the keyboard is not responding the led of the display is yellow etc. Now I reset the computer,
2. Booting Windoze
3. Choose Restart not Shutdown from Windoze
4. Booting Slack
5. startx works fine, the X server is starting and working great.
I have Radeon 9500. I configured X server with 3D accel over 2500 FPS on glxgears. The same problem persists even with X server VESA configured.

Nov 12, 2010Running Lucid 10.04 in place of XP on my old Packard Bell Imedia has been good apart from the random freeze-ups that often prevent booting or stall the shutdown process. Today I think I solved it!? It appears that my wireless PCI adapter (ZyXel G-302 v3) was causing the problem. Ubuntu had installed a default driver which seemed to work OK; but I thought I'd try installing the Windows XP driver from my original ZyXel install disk as an experiment. I used ndiswrapper, got the XP driver installed and my freeze-ups have gone (touch wood).

Jul 16, 2011After an error occurred i can log in using the recovery console and startx manually.
If i understood correctly recovery mode uses /etc/rcS.d which starts the computer with minimal services and the normal startup is /etc/rc2.d. What can rc3, rc4 and rc5 be used for? Can anyone run different desktops (gnome, xfce, etc) using these runlevels (i am considering that the base system install is the same for all desktops)? Where i can find information about the services that are listed in the rc folders, since some (hibernate, bluetooth, apache2) are not useful to me at the moment.
I am also interested to find out what makes the computer start at it's default runlevel. Is there a way to start rc2 (or rc3, etc) from the recovery mode? When i used to start my computer, it would load into grub, and then it used to get me to the login screen. This is something i would like to avoid (the login screen), and start at the command prompt. My startups are minimal since the computer is always on. I was thinking of 'copying' rcS into rc2 for a normal console start and then start rc3 or rc4 or rc5 to load a desktop.
I am using Squeeze, Gnome, default installation.
