Ubuntu :: System Locks Solid During Disc Writes?

Jun 9, 2010

System spec:

Core 2 Quad, Q6600, 2.4GHz OC'd to 3GHz
Asus Rampage Formula m/b
2x WD RE2 500GB HDDs ("linux boot" and "winxp boot")
1x Seagate Barracuda HDD ("boneyard")
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I'm having a really annoying problem with disc activity on my desktop system. Basically, if anything is writing a large amount of data to the hard drive (say, 10MB or over), the machine basically freezes solid. The mouse goes jittery (you move it and it takes a second then moves in one big leap).

For instance, if I try to image a USB hard drive to a file:

# dd if=/dev/sdh of=usbdrive_dump bs=1G

Effectively this works in two portions: it reads 1GB of data to RAM, then blats it out into a file. The machine is perfectly responsive while the USB drive is getting thrashed, but locks solid when the internal SATA drives are in use. Writing to USB HDDs doesn't seem to have the same effect -- I can copy 1GB files to/from them all day long and the machine is perfectly happy.

General :: Can't See What Is On A CD B/c Of Rock Ridge

Mar 13, 2010

Hey guys, I've been trying to install quake 4 on my debian linux 64-bit Lenny Computer, but the problem is when I put the other CDs in I get an error that I do not have permission to read them. I went to the zerowing site for Quake 4 [URL].. and they said that the CDs have Rock Ridge Protection and they give an explanation:

The install CDs have Rock Ridge extensions which may get in the way of copying the files to your hard drive. You should make sure to mount the CDs ignoring the extension ( "-o norock" ) or setup appropriate mounted partition ownership / copy files as root and fixup manually. They said to mount the CDs by ignoring the extension.

General :: Simple Way To Umount NFS Mount In System?

Oct 25, 2010

I've mounted a share using standard nomenclature for the NFS mount command with the following command line:

mount -t nfs -o rw {IP address1}:/ /mnt_for_70 / {IP address2}(rw)

mnt_for_70 is a mount point I created on {IP address2}

I'm confuse and want to be sure I use the correct command on the correct host to correctly umount the nfs share.

Would I execute umount /mnt_for_70 on {IP address2}

Not sure if such a simple command will work. As this is a semi-production host pair, I hesitate to just umount so simply & I have no test systems to try this on...

Server :: Simple Mirroring Networked File System?

Apr 8, 2010

I have two web servers. One is active and one is in reserve. I keep the user data (web pages) in sync by running rsync every 10 minutes or so. This copies any changes from the active machine to the reserve machine. But, it's slow, only gets changes every 10 minutes, bogs down the disk, does strange things to files that are changing during the rsync process etc...

I want something that will automatically copy any changes from the active server to the reserve server as they are made. IE I hit 'save' on the active server, it copies the file to the reserve server. Simple!

I've been looking around and I see GFS which is really vastly more complicated than I need. I'm happy with read-only access on the reserve host, so I don't need distributed lock management.

I could theoretically implement this by setting inotify watchers on every file and running an SCP or rsync command when a file gets saved. So, it can't be that hard.

I do not need a true networked file system, as in something I mount over the network. I just want something to keep my disks in sync.

Ubuntu :: U10.10 Freezing Up Solid / Fix It?

Feb 9, 2011

I'm a bit perplexed on this issue. I searched through Google looking for similar issues and can't seem to find one that quite fits and I was wondering if someone else has heard of this happening.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on a friend's Dell Inspiron 1501 to replace the entirely screwed up Windows Vista that was on it. The install process went without flaw or issue. Everything worked perfectly out of the box. My issue comes when I try to copy files from my terabyte external onto the computer (the files she had backed up from her vista install). Files larger than about 300MB cause the computer to freeze up solid. The only thing that works is the power button to force shutdown. There's no mouse... nothing. This made me think there was a hardware issue but...

The external drive has no issues on any computer other than this one so I'm inclined to think the Dell is causing the issues. I ran Ubuntu's drive test and it reported no errors, and MemTest 86 comes up with no errors.

So, I'm looking for some educated guesses. If Ubuntu can handle installs and lengthy updates with no problem, but then connecting an external USB HDD and copying over files causes it to freeze up tighter than I've ever seen Ubuntu freeze before... could a faulty USB port cause this? Motherboard? Ubuntu itself? I'm installing Ubuntu from CD.

Ubuntu :: Is There More Reliable Way To Use Skype?

May 17, 2011

I use Skype on my computer at work for IMs, I don't even try to use it for voice or video calls, but I constantly have problems with it.It seems like what's happening is a backend part of the program keeps freezing. The UI is responsive, but I'll notice when I try to send messages, I'll get a 'caution' icon next to them with a tooltip reading "Your message has not been delivered". If I try to quit Skype, it hangs and I have to kill -9 it.So my question is, is there a more reliable way to use Skype in Ubuntu, maybe a different program than the official Skype client? Remember, I only care about text chat.
