Networking :: Ensure Reliable RS-232 Connection?

Oct 15, 2010

I have a configuration file for a network device(2100 lines). This device is configurable only over console line. If I copy chunks of those lines into terminal(I use minicom), there will be mistakes (sometimes some characters missing, space characters added etc). Hardware flow control and software flow control doesn't help either. I tried with cu utility, but same issues appeared. There will be mistakes even if I copy in ~100 line parts. What causes those missing/added characters? How to avoid those?

Fedora Networking :: WiFi Not Reliable And Can't Change Networks?

Jul 24, 2009

Fedora 10 (dual boot w/ XP) on Dell Optiplex with a Dell wirelessntennaI am on a university campus with campus-wide wifi network (so no router). I have a wireless HP printer that I want to be able to print to using an ad-hoc connection. The wireless antenna, networking, and wireless printing are all working in Windows XP (so hardware is OK). However, on the linux side, the wifi is really really finicky.

When I first boot up to fedora, it usually connects no problem to the campus-wide wifi network. If I try to switch to the ad-hoc printer network (which it sees), will not connect and, furthermore, it will no longer connect to the campus-wide network (and sometimes it doesn't "see" this network at all). It seems that restarting the Network Manager service sometimes helps to reconnect to the campus-wide network, but not always and I can't connect to the ad-hoc regardlessNOTE: I'm just barely a linux user, and I didn't set up my system - don't assume that I did anything that would be common sense and, if you can, walk me through your suggestions.

Ubuntu :: Is There More Reliable Way To Use Skype?

May 17, 2011

I use Skype on my computer at work for IMs, I don't even try to use it for voice or video calls, but I constantly have problems with it.It seems like what's happening is a backend part of the program keeps freezing. The UI is responsive, but I'll notice when I try to send messages, I'll get a 'caution' icon next to them with a tooltip reading "Your message has not been delivered". If I try to quit Skype, it hangs and I have to kill -9 it.So my question is, is there a more reliable way to use Skype in Ubuntu, maybe a different program than the official Skype client? Remember, I only care about text chat.

General :: Pcfg_openfile - Unable To Check Htaccess File - Ensure It Is Readable

Jul 8, 2010

After moving a website folder on my local development machine to another drive, then moving it back, I got a 403 error. Most of this problem had probably to do with rights that got messed up. After deleting the code and restoring it from SVN, the rights seemed allright. The error stayed however.

The setup is a bit complex, as follows:

I have Ubuntu 10.4 as development machine, trying to mimic the server as much as possible We use Eclipse + SVN and I create all projects in a local folder under my user account In /var/www-vhosts I create folders for each vhost, like this one: test.localhost test.local/index.php: includes the index file of the project
test.local/.htaccess is a dynamic link to the htaccess file in a project subfolder

I get the following error in the apache error log:

The problem seems to be the .htaccess file, or the link to it. When I empty the htaccess, nothing changes When I remove the link, the index-include produces some output (in the apache error log) When I remove the link and replace it with the actual file, I get another error:

Debian :: Create Own Self-signed SSL Certificate To Ensure The Basket Area Remains Secure?

Dec 27, 2010

Things beyond my control are causing me to rush a bit in getting the website moved. I'm working hard to try and get it done, but something else has come up that SSL Certificate.I know that our website's "basket" area is protected by an SSL certificate to ensure customer information, especially credit info, is secure. With the move to Amazon's service, it looks like I may need to create our own self-signed SSL certificate to ensure the basket area remains secure.

I have found guides that walk through how to make one yourself and configuring apache to allow it, but something else has come to mind. The guides I found don't really indicate where the SSL certificate goes afterwards, and also doesn't suggest which sections should be governed by the certificate (as only the basket section uses it, not anything else). How would I find out that information?

Server :: Most Reliable Distro For Bug Free Updates?

Jan 22, 2010

I have been running a fedora server without issues for many years and recently updated to FC12. It turned out that there is a bug in OpenSSL in FC12 that caused me a lot of problems and I had to build apache, mod_ssl and OpenSSL from source to get it working.I'm now looking at migrating to another distribution becasue Fedora is not appropriate for a production server environment in a growing company.

What I want to know is what is the most reliable distribution with regards automatic updates (bug free that is)? I'm comparing RedHat, Ubuntu LTS, Debian, etc. at the moment. Is there any report that looks at this topic?I'd expect RedHat would have the best, but I also have to take cost into account as it is the only platform that you have to pay for these updates.I read this but it seems to quickly move away from the "bug-free" question initially asked.

Ubuntu :: What's The Most Reliable, Corruption-resistant Archive Format

Mar 3, 2010

I'm wanting to create a one-time snapshot archive of all my data in case something catastrophic ever happens to my main hard drive and my backup drive. I should add that I update my main backup regularly, which means that I wouldn't notice any creeping data corruption problems until it's too late...which is another reason a one-time snapshot is so important.Since I'm archiving a snapshot of all of my data at once, only a hard drive is big enough to handle the job. (I'll copy a small fraction - the truly 100% irreplaceable stuff - to DVD-R's too, but that doesn't mean I particularly want to lose any of the other stuff either.) Unfortunately, this means my storage medium doesn't inherently have any CRC's, error correction/redundancy bits, etc. built into it like data DVD's might.

So: What archive format would you suggest using for maximum reliability and resistance to corruption? My main concern is making sure that I can still open the archive and extract surviving files even if some of the bits (or the entirety of other files) go corrupt. This is my last-ditch fallback archive, so if I ever need to use it, I really, really don't want to get a message saying the archive is corrupt and cannot be opened at all! Because of that, it's important that the individual files and folders are compressed separately from each other...if at all. I don't care about the compression ratio, and I'd even be happy if the archive was 150% the size of my data thanks to a gigantic recovery record. I also care about CRC's and such, since I'll want to know which files/folders/etc. are corrupt vs. which ones are still intact.
