Slackware :: Simple And Elegant PDF Reader For Use With Firefox?
Jan 6, 2010
I am looking for a simple and elegant PDF reader for use with firefox. Adobe reader would seem an obvious choice, however I would rather not set up a multilib system for one application.recommend some PDF readers, that integrate nicely with firefox, as in display withing the browser?

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 and need to access government sites that require a cac card login. I followed every instruction posted [URL] on how to set up the cac reader, but it is not working in firefox. Pcsc_scan detects the card reader and the card when it is inserted with the following output:
Code:
wulu@MLP:~$ pcsc_scan
PC/SC device scanner
V 1.4.14 (c) 2001-2008, Ludovic Rousseau <ludovic.rousseau@free.fr>
Compiled with PC/SC lite version: 1.4.99
Scanning present readers
0: O2 Micro Oz776 00 00 .....
Possibly identified card (using /home/wulu/.smartcard_list.txt):
3B 7D 96 00 00 80 31 80 65 B0 83 11 17 D6 83 00 90 00
DoD CAC card issued Jan 14, 2010
When I loaded the device in firefox's security devices, it loaded fine without any error, but does not allow me to login (the button is disabled). In the Details pane the status is shown as "not present".

I have successfully installed Adobe Reader 9.1. It shows up in firefox as a plugin properly. It does not show up in edit->preferences as an Application (not sure if that matters). However when I click on a PDF to download, I get an error in the browser:
"Could not launch Adobe Reader 9.1.2. Please make sure it exists in PATH variable in the environment. If the problem persists, please reinstall the application."
I put the /opt/Adobe/Reader9/bin in my PATH in ~/.bashrc and even rebooted to make sure all was set. I still get the same message. Where do I set my PATH to make this work?

My firefox will not open a pdf (Adobe reader/acroread) directly. An error comes up that I need to change my preferences. I have gone into preferences, but there is no area for pdf reader in the preferences panel. I have tried reinstalling both acroread, and adobe reader bin file from adobe website, to no avail.

Since a week or two, clicking a link to a pdf file will not load in Firefox. I tried removing Adobe Reader and reinstalling it. Then the pdf files loaded, but now again they will not load. It just stopped working! No error messages.

Anyone running fedora 11 have any luck getting a smart card reader added as a security device under firefox?
Specifically from firefox: Edit-Preferences-Advanced-Encryption tab-Security_Devices-Load;
Enter arbitrary name and "/usr/lib64/libcoolkeypk11.so" as the module.
This worked fine in fedora10 and was the necessary step to getting a card reader to work with firefox. In fedora11 (with firefox beta) the browser just comes back with nothing, it doesn't even respond. Note I am familiar with the concept of pki and certificates as well as certutil, pkcs11_inspect, pklogin_finder, etc. Also note utlities like pkcs11_inspect and pklogin_finder and esc all work and communicate with the reader and read the contents of the card but smart card login configured via the authentication applet (as working in fedora 10) is not working either.

I recently moved (~65mi). I have all my files on my Linux Server at home. I want to find a way to have 2 Ubuntu Workstations (at my office/apartment) and Laptop to all be able to stream my media from my home server. (The server get about 600kbps upstream).
Accessing the files I found OpenVPN and NFS to work great - however streaming my videos hasn't been so good - its extremely choppy and unwatchable. I realize there is no perfect solution, but is there anything that could be setup to buffer/prefetch/compress videos making them tolerable to watch?

kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU/Linux (slackware 12.0). I had the bad idea of installing Adobe in my linux box and, as a result, even when I click on a .flac file the reader opens. What is bad about this is that Xfce help system is very poor. Menu bar>Help uses internet to open the site page, where there is very little help indeed. Right clicking, for example, an HTML file, I can choose the application to open it with and I'll be asked if I want this to be the default action. But for every file type I should be making this work! Perhaps deleting a hidden file in ~/ where xfce registered the associations. I do not want to uninstall Adobe as it is really fast scanning docs.

Adobe Reader 9.3.3 on Slackware 13.1 (32 bit). This is the stand-alone reader, not the browser plugin. The Reader crashes the second time I open the print dialog. Even if I cancel, and do not actually print. For example: Open a PDF, File=>Print, Cancel, File=>Print. Then the Reader window is gone, with no message anywhere I can find.

I am experiencing a problem with the DVD reader/burner... At first, I would come up to my office and noticed that the DVD tray was opened... Strange because I never use it and did not remembered to have used it. When it happened, I simply closed the dvd tray and I was all set (until the next time). This issue occurred several times within the last month... Today, it happened again, but this time, I close the tray, it stayed closed for 8-10 seconds and reopens by itself again! It happened 5 o 6 times in a row until 5 minutes ago, I closed the tray and it stayed closed...

I was wondering if anyone knew of a lightweight and easy-to-configure MTA, or any other way of sending messages from a command-line environment without too much of a fuss. I would only be sending messages through a single Gmail account, and would rather not bother with all of the sendmail configuration.

I have openSUSE 11.2, 64 bits. I use Evince from the very beginning. Since a few weeks, when I want to open a .pdf file, Acrobat Reader appears and reads my file. It seems to have become the default reader now. However, I never wanted to change from Evince :this simple program is well enough for me. I tried various ways, but I can't define Evince as my default .pdf reader. How can I make Evince to become my default reader again please ?

I always have a problem in simple user mode when I insert a USB key. Can't mount, can't open with file manager. I'm obliged to open a simultaneous root session, to do what I want to manage the usb key.
In my user manager, I don't know wich group I have to add to this simple user (it's me) so I am allowed to manage the usb key.

I just recently installed slackware 13.37 as a fresh install. In firefox, I currently only have the flashplayer plugin installed, no themes, no other add-ons. Firefox will open fine the first time, however after I close it and try to open it again, I get a message saying that firefox is already running and the process must be closed before another session can be opened. Looking through the open processes, firefox-bin still shows open. I can kill -9 firefox-bin and restart firefox, but then I have the same problem after close. I have deleted my .mozilla folder, which did not help and I have deleted the libflashplayer.

I have a 100% Slackware 13.37 network on both server and clients, with roaming profiles using NIS and NFS. Currently I'm debugging the whole thing, and I have a strange error that I can't quite explain.Sometimes when my girlfriend logs in, she gets some strange "Firefox is already running" error. The strange thing here is: ps aux | grep firefox returns absolutely no Firefox process. The only "solution" to convince Firefox to start again is to wipe her ~/.mozilla directory, but by doing this, she loses all her bookmarks and settings.

i installed slackware-13.37 in my laptop and everything went ok. but then i tried to install different versions of firefox in my language (portuguese). I downloaded the files, and tried to install it in /opt partition, but first i removed the previous version of firefox located at /usr/lib64/firefox-4.0. so i made tar -xjvf firefox-4.0.1.tar.bz2 as root and everything went ok. but when i made ./firefox it just keeps firefox script.

I would like to know if there is a fix for firefox font menus, also the font for bookmarks, the problem is that these fonts are too big , like 16 , instead of 10 or 12
i've had this problem with all linux distros that i've used, everything is fine except the menu and bookmark fonts in firefox, same in chrome, menu and bookmark fonts are big, anything i tried i could not make it look like the normal font sizes in windows or even Konqueror. and it not that only that it is big fonts, they are also wide.
