I have a slackware 12 distro (actually backtrack 3) that I want to enable FTP logins. So I start the proftp service with in.proftpd But when I attempt login with ftp, I get "530 Login incorrect" after entering the correct password for the account.

Now with source code based installation the start and stop services are not working.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen installing Samba and Webmin I use the application "system-config-services" or (if it is easier to find for you that way) menu->Administration->Service management. In this application I can start the services I need (nmb, smb, webmin), but the enable/disable at startup setting is greyed out... Even when I start the application as root it still gives me no possibility to configure the services to start up on boot. This should be possible. It works this way in Fedora 13 and Fedora 14, so why not in Fedora 15?
Before reporting a bug, I would like to ask if other users here have the same problem (and -if possible- a solution)... In the mean tim I guess it is back to the old way of configurating services - sigh..
[edit] I tried to remove the [SOLVED] from the title, but the forum software does not seems to allow me to do that... I thought it was solved by installing xinetd, but I was happy a bit too early. I still have no answer for this problem.
I've been using this howto to set up automatic logins to virtual console using "a C login program" method. In slackware64-current updated till january it prompted me to enter a password before logging in, while now after installing latest updates and kde 4.3.5 from current it logs in automatically without any prompting.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm running slackware current. Blueman works perfectly, except for DUN. I can connect to DUN service, but I don't know to open the connection. I've tried to find help on the blueman website, and I've I've found this page [URL].
Where says to install plugins to use DUN. Before I screw up my blueman configuration .. those plugin are already included in the blueman package? I can't find where to download them. If they are already included, what I've to do to use DUN?
Can anybody recommend an online storage service that works with Linux and preferably Slackware? Free would be nice but a small monthly fee is ok too. I'm looking for an offsite storage to backup a small collection of files, mostly documents, maybe around 2Gb total and encryption would be probably required. Nightly transfers would come from a Slackware 12.2 file server, but I can upgrade it to current version if needed.

For example, what should I beware if I use 12.2 and chroot a 13.1 system? Or if I use 13.1 and chroot a 12.2 system? After all, the chroot does inherit some attributes of the parent system.There is the noticeable difference of kernel versions. For that one reason I'm thinking that mixing system versions might be frustrating.
My focus is building packages, not running an alternate operating system or a service such as ssh. I realize that building packages as root in a chroot potentially compromises security but that is not my focus.I am aware that a chroot is not a true virtual system.A virtual machine is an option, but in this thread I'm curious about the limitations of chroot. I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect.Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

I just finished setting up my slack machine as a home server (printers & files) and I noticed that I have an IPv6 address (from ifconfig)... I didn't know I did. I used to work in tech support and when a windows or OSx machine didn't connect properly on a LAN, disabling IPV6 was a common troubleshooting step. Is there a way to easily turn inet6 connectivity off/on in Slackware? (I want to keep the ability to get an IPv6, we will all use those in the future)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got 5 users who share a bunch of virtual Windows XP guests via VRDP (VirtualBox RDP access), and I'm having some problems with managing their NumLock state. They all use rdesktop to access the Windows XP machines. This works very well, as long as all of them have NumLock enabled. If one of them disables it by mistake, and then logs into one of the Windows XP machines, NumLock is disabled and some of the programs they use start to act really weird. This is causing us some grief.
So I'd like to be able to enable NumLock on all the computers (they are all running Slackware 12.2) before X, while X runs and while KDE is running. And when NumLock is enabled for the entire system, thenI'd like to remove the ability to disable NumLock altogether. NumLock should always be enabled for these users, no matter what. It would be really nice if Linux/X/KDE/whatever just honored the BIOS setting, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Oh, and I'd really like if the NumLock LED was ON, so everybody are made aware of the fact that they have NumLock turned on.
ps. I've tried remapping the keys on the numeric pad with xmodmap, but that doesn't solve the problem. The actual NumLock state must be set to avoid problems with the troubled Windows programs.
I try to connect my graphic card with my TV. I have ATI Radeon 4850 card with 7 pins S-video output and I want to connect it my TV using s-video to RCA cable (the RCA output is yelow, red and white, I assume the 7 pins has audio signal as well).
My card doesn't have problem when connect it wit my monitor via DVI, but the S-video out is not detected. How can I enable it? Can I configure the card from KDE? If so, how?
I'm using the driver from Slackware package and I'm using Slackware 13 stable 64.
I am not able to enable composite with the nvidia driver. And a few other issues that I been able to get around but so far the nvidia driver is my main problem.
