Oct 13, 2010

How can I set a video mode when slackware starts? Instead of having to select one each time or wait 30sec.

Slackware :: Disabling High Intensity At The Video Card Level (text Mode)?

Jun 17, 2011

Kernel 2.6.21.5, slackware 12.0

When you do 'man bash', you'll see some words are highlighted. I'll say that the video card has used high intesity in these instances. How do I disable this video card capability? Can this only be done by recompiling the kernel? Of course, I am talking about the text consoles, i.e., the video card in text mode.

Ubuntu :: Freeze After Switching Video Mode During Boot ?

Oct 8, 2010

I just bought an Asus TS mini server. It has an Atom CPU (N280), and an Intel 945 chipset.

I installed Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04, that went smooth.

But on first boot, I see it hanging just after it mounts the swap. Now I don't think it has anything to do with that, the problem seems to me that at that point, it also switches the video mode. I guess that's where the problem is caused. It just freezes, no kernel panic, no reaction to the keyboard.

The system is dual boot, and the other OS is Windows Home Server. I put an ext fs driver there, and tried to read the logs, but don't get a clue from there. In particular, syslog doesn't even exist. Also no X log.

Slackware :: Set The Journaling Mode Into Data=journal Mode Of Ext3

Jan 12, 2011

I was reading about ext3 feature and I have read about its journaling modes. I would like to ask what is the default journaling mode of ext3 fs in slackware(or is it in all distro using ext3)? I'll install slackware when my new pc arrive and the fs I will use will be ext3 and I like it to have data=journal mode for its journaling. I have read in some wiki how to set the journaling mode into data=journal mode.

Code: # tune2fs -O has_journal -o journal_data /dev/sdXY Do i need to issue this command or is this the default mode in ext3 in slackware?

Ubuntu :: System Won't Boot, Can't Find Safe Mode, Can't Launch Recovery Mode

Nov 18, 2010

I attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

Ubuntu :: Video Mode Not Supported ?

Aug 7, 2010

I have windows 7 64 bits and i'm trying to install ubuntu 10.04 amd64. The installation was good but when i'm trying to boot on ubuntu i have a black screen with a message "mode not supported".

I've looked for the problem on google. The solution is to change the frequency of the monitor. Mine supports only 75htz max and on the error message I have 77htz, what's why it's not supported.

The problem that to change the frequency for lunux i have to be logged in linux in order to type commands in the terminal.

But I can't see a thing, only the message about the mode not supported, so I can't type anything.

I found some solutions here but i can't do what they ask, because I can't boot and the message doesn't disappear. [url]

OpenSUSE Install :: Undefined Video Mode 346 ?

Aug 16, 2009

While booting SUSE 11.1 64-bit I get these messages:

Code:
Probing EDD (edd off to disable)
Undefined video mode 346
Press Enter to see video modes available
And then a 30-second wait.

Is it advisable to set edd off? If so, how?

Would that get rid of the 30-second wait?

The video card (NVidia GeForce 6150 LE) and the monitor (ViewSonic VA2216W-4) seem to work fine with SUSE, so I don't understand the "Undefined video mode" message.

Having said that, I've seen much better text-rendering than, for instance, this messageboard. See attached image. Could that be a card/monitor problem? It looks better in Vista with the same hardware. So does Firefox in general.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Display Video Mode (after Update)

May 8, 2011

I am running a dual boot system. I have XP on one HD and Ubuntu 10.04 on the other. No problems. I boot back and forth all the time. Then came along Natty. Now I tried to boot over, and I get "Cannot display this video mode". I have it set up that when I restart, if im away from the computer, Ubuntu starts by default. So it eventually starts in ubuntu. But the screen where I used to be able to choose which operating system to boot into is now replaced with "Cannot display this video mode".

I am not wireless, and nothing has changed as far as hard wear. The monitor is some old Dell that worked perfectly fine with 10.04. I tried changing my resolution and settings to every different one, and restart, and still no dice.

To sum it up, after my update to Natty, when I reboot, my OS selection screen is no longer visible. Its now replaced by "Cannot display this video mode".

So now it seems, what ever setting this screen is running on, XP dont like it..... because of Natty?

I gotta get some work done in XP, so right now im screwed. My CRT is currently sitting outside in the rain. Or I would try it.

Fedora :: Copying CDs / DVDs (Video And Data) In Raw Mode

Dec 10, 2009

I'm trying to find out which application will copy DVD discs (video and data) in raw mode. Something that works for DVDs like cdrdao works for CDs. I tried using cdrdao but it errors out because the DVD disc is too big for it. I tried looking at Brasero but I can't tell if it offers a raw option. I see that Brasero lets you copy a DVD to a RAW image, then burn the RAW image back to a DVD-R. If Brasero uses RAW mode to do a direct copy, this would essentially do the same thing, but I can't tell if that is what it does. But, I think this will work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wrong Video Mode After 1st Install

Jun 16, 2010

I just received a band new DELL laptop with a blank disk and installed Kubuntu Lucid Alternate 64 on it. No problem during install (the only option I specified was for an encrypted LVM), but when I try to boot all I can see are colored lines scrolling/blinking on the screen. If I press any key it changes to white text (unreadable) scrolling/blinking.

If I press a key during the boot and get into grub, I cannot edit the boot options, cannot go to command line, cannot use MemTest86 (maybe because the partition is encrypted). Booting with the recovery mode shows the same lines. Edit: if I try to boot with the standard LiveCD, I get the same mess, so it's abviously a video card problem. Damn, I had checked beforehand that Ubuntu could run smoothly on it.

Hardware :: ATI Radeon And Samsung TV - Unsupported Video Mode

Oct 7, 2010

I had planned to use my Samsung LED-TV (UE40B6000) as a secondary display connected to the DVI port (my 5:4 display is connected to the VGA port). But there are only two modes I can get it to work with: 1280x1024@60Hz and 1280x1024@75Hz. _All_ of the other modes produce a "unsupported video mode" on the TV screen. Now here's the thing, it works fine under Windows, I can easily set the LED-TV to 1920x1080@60Hz as described in the TV's manual, i.e. just choose the settings under Windows (no extra driver required). So, I thought I might have messed up my Ubuntu system some way. I tried with both Ubuntu 10.04 and openSUSE 11.3 live CDs producing the exact same results - only 1280x1024 produces a picture.

I switched modes using the "gnome-display-properties" tools which reports a Samsung Electric Company 7" display offering all the modes it should (incl. 1920x1080@60). As this didn't work I used xrandr to switch with the same results. After that I started fiddling with a /etc/xorg.conf file for the better part of last night with ModeLines and suggestions (gtf ...) from all across the internet, too numerous for me to remember, especially since I basically took whatever came along (not a very structured approach - I know, but I got somewhat desperate). Nothing worked, nothing at all.

Some times, when watching full screen videos on: „you tube”, the only way to exit from full screen is to navigate with Alt+Tab to another open window, which cancel full screen mode, or Alt+F4.

Esc and „Exit from full screen mode” down right button, do not cancel full screen. Also on vimeo full screen videos freezes on half way.

I read that these may be because of VGA so i changed the VGA adapter, problem persists!

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Install 11.4 Video Unreadable Except For Safe Mode ?

Mar 30, 2011

My old desktop had a power supply that was going bad, so instead of replacing it again I decided to buy a new PC Desktop. So I ordered from TigerDirect.com and got a grodd AMD computer without a operating system on it as I didn't want that Windows 7 scheisse on it. So I downloaded SuSe 11.4 64 bit, and installed it last night.

At this point I will tell you the new PC has an NVIDIA GeForce 61100 GPU for graphics with 128 mb memory. Also I use an HP W2007 wide display monitor running 1680 by 1050 resolution, that I got over 3 years ago when I was running SuSe 10.2.

So during installation last night of 11.4 when it did the first boot after install, is when I first saw the symptom which is an illegible white screen, with about 100 3 mm lines on it. So I shut down, rebooted and brought it up safe mode and all is fine. The error screen only appears if I boot GRUB with the Desktop or Xen option and only when the boot would switch to display my desktop.

I recall a similar illegible video monitor issue when I first got the display over 3 years ago, and fixed it by changing a SuSe video configuration option, but being I am getting old and I didn't write down what the configuration file was I am at a loss. All my previous SuSe installations never had a problem as I would always choose the Update rather than new install option thus that configuration file was brought across the many releases installations. This video configuration parameter had the monitor resolution sizes in it.
