I have a new dell inspiron 1545 since i am facing problems with vista i wanted to work with linux operating system (fedora 9). I want to install the video drivers and sound drivers for my laptop..When i installed fedora 9 my screen resolution was 1366x768 but suddenly now my resolution is 1024x768. I tried to change the resolution but I am unable to find my laptop resolution. What could be the problem
Here I can see my video card and sound card.. I want to install the drivers for my cards
is this possible? Or does one have to use the binary blobs?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.
View 4 Replies View Relatedthis happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

- Video resolution seems to change during video playback

As you can see, I have created three posts to keep discussions focused.
Alltogether I have the following setup:
- AMD 5050e CPU
- 8 GByte RAM
- Biostar TA890GXE
- Samsung LE40M86BD, connected via HDMI (and only HDMI)
- Mythbuntu 10.10 with proprietary drivers installed
- Technisat Skystar HD2 DVB-S card (two times)
Now, here is the problem:
Whenever I playback any video material using e.g. VLC, the screen resolution changes. This also applies when playback the video in a window and not fullscreen. The problem is that whenever the screen resolution changes, short time later the TV set blanks screen and show the TV set specific information "unsupported video mode".
How can I enforce to stay in the configured video mode?
Im trying to get away from the world of M$ into linux and I think slackware is the way to go for me. In particular SW13-64bit. My question is though I dont see many hardware manufacturers supporting SW, but I do see suse and redhat. How hard/possible is it to use redhat suse drivers for slackware? Can they be modified/rebuilt?
Im also considering buying a cheap server off ebay to use. Can someone let me know if any of the following would cause an issue with slackware?In particular the Adaptec sata raid controller which I want to run in raid 5.
How much support does Slackware have for drivers?I have an Asus motherboard, and the onboard sound doesn't work with Ubuntu, and also it won't recognize my HP printer.Would I have better luck with Slackware?

It works perfectly well in the lower kernel versions. Am I the only one facing the problem? I've nVidia Corporation C51 [Geforce 6150 Go] (rev a2) in my laptop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an old Gateway desktop machine that a friend gave me, but any time I try to do something in a window-based environment like GNOME or KDE, the system locks up. I'm under the impression that this is a driver issue since the ethernet and video are integrated on the motherboard and neither works appropriately.
I cracked the case and got the number for the motherboard, which is: 4000811. From here I'm not quite sure what to do to make sure I've got the right drivers for the motherboard in place and could use some I'm on 10.04 server and ONLY have access to a command line.

I just installed 11.04 and I knew I would have to install the NVidia video drivers. So it was no surprise when it popped up a warning and dropped me into Gnome Classic view. So I turned on the NVidia drivers and rebooted. In my desktop selection menu on the login screen I have "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic".
Unfortunately they look exactly alike, with the Gnome panel along the top, and the panel with the taskbar, desktops and recylce bin on the bottom. I've gone back-and-forth a few times and nothing has changed. Some changes in one environment is not set in the other, like they really are 2 different environments.
According to the Software Center, Unity (not Unity 2D) *is* installed.So how can I boot into the Unity desktop?
How can I get a list of what X video drivers are on my system? Preferably not using a package manager (since I'm not sure I trust it to not miss stuff like the nvidia driver). Googling didn't give anything useful .

I'm using the liqorix kernel and have been updating when new versions become available. However, every time I install a new version and restart, I have to re-install my video drivers. I don't think this is normal, but I could be wrong, I'm basing my past experience on updating Ubuntu kernels. So is this normal? Is there a way I can prevent myself from having to re-install my video drivers every time I update my kernel?

Running GNU/kFreeBSD debian 8.1-1-amd64 and base system working. Can not get X or xrandr to co-operate and use proper resolution of 1680x1050. I believe the basis of this is that it using the VESA drivers and instead should be using the INTEL drivers.
I have no 'pkg_add' for ports, plus obviously no Debian repos will help for this .... unless there are some specific kFreeBSD repos I dont know about? I can post more details on the system, but am hoping that there are other options besides compiling. I can do that if need be, but not even sure which one to use. Will these work on this system? I would like to know the best way to swap out video cards from ati to nvidia. For example. In windows, I would uninstall the driver, switch the cards, boot into a low VGA windows session and install the new drivers, reboot done.
In sues, I'm wondering if I uninstall the drivers, after rebooting I might loose my Gnome desktop. And I guess at that point I'd be looking at a blinking cursor?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen Lucid Lynx came out I did a clean install on my laptop by burning an iso. Unfortunately, I got an annoying bug in which the image would always be wiggly (wavy) in the external monitor. In an attempt to fix the issue, I tried to installed Ati's restricted drivers. Unfortunately, my graphics card (Radeon x1200) isn't supported by them on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install it anyway only made things worse.
Right now, I just want it to be back to what it was when I first installed Lucid. Following the instructions on this page, I have already removed the fglrx drivers, and I think I installed the open-source driver. However, I can tell that things are not the way they were when I first installed. By going in "Main menu > System > Preferences > Monitors" I get the usual menu to configure the monitors, except I can't actually configure anything.
There's only one monitor (listed as Unknown), and the system doesn't let me change any of the settings (such as resolution or frequency). The external monitor is showing the same output as the laptop monitor, and doesn't get recognized by the system. I just want to use the exact graphics drivers that came installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But I don't want to do a clean install.
I was messing around with Ubuntu trying to make somethings work. Then i rebooted ,and I wasn't able to turn on Visual Effects. So I'm guessing that I must have replaced my video card driver with a non-compatible one or just removed it without knowing. So I was wondering "How Can I Switch Back To The Video Card Driver Ubuntu Came With?" Without reinstalling Ubuntu? Since I was able to at least switch on Visual Effects with it.
