I have just upgraded from a fully functional 9.10 to 10.04 which doesn't seem to find the correct intel video drivers when trying to activate compiz extra desktop effects on my laptop...

I tried reinstalling the video drivers using sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel with no luck, telling me I already am using the latest version.
I have bought asus notebook with nvidia geforce GT 320m, and installed ubuntu 9.10 notebook remix, and i can't found any drivers for video card, iam new in linux.

First windows lost borders, so I reset X (ctrl+backspace) and since then, effects went to hell.
I've reinstalled nVidia drivers. All went fine, but desktop effect still disappeared.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Linux for the first time because my Dell Inspiron 1525 got a virus and would not boot windows anymore. Everything works great. The only thing is that no my internal wireless card won't work and when I try to activate the drivers they just freeze. I have Linux Mint 8 Helena. I go to Menu-->Administration--> Hardware Drivers and attempt to activate the Broadcom STA and the screen just freezes. I have tried this several times with no luck. New to ubuntu. I love the OS. Everything works great except for the network connection. It tells me I need to activate the b43 drivers with fwcutter, but here are the following problems:
1) I can't download and install the drivers b/c I can't connect to the internet wired or wireless.
2) I can't find the website to download the appropriate drivers (I've looked for hours)
3)I'm not too sure how to install them since I don't have a background in coding.
I really like ubuntu, I just need network working.
I had, with much delight, accomplished a dual boot install of Ubuntu 9.1.0 and Windows 7 the other day and everything was working perfectly fine. However, I decided to activate the proprietary Nvidia drivers that were available in the drivers menu and my system subsequently no longer operates. After installing and rebooting Ubuntu will no longer work and becomes stuck on a black screen with two white dashes in the top right had of the screen.
This hang up occurs directly after the first white Ubuntu logo appears during the startup and the only key that will work during this screen are Crtl + Alt + F1, which only bring up a second black screen except with a solid white dash in the top right screen. At that point no key will work. I have tried to fix things in recovery mode and used envyng to remove the nvidia drivers as well as other operations, however the same result still appears when I try and run Ubuntu. I own a Sony Vaio Z690C if it makes any difference.
I'm been wanting to try Ubuntu for a while now, and when my mom's netbook started to get insanely slow with WinXP, I tried the Netbook Remix on a USB stick. I LOVE it, except I am unable to get the wireless working, which is the only thing stopping me right now from a full install.
I believe my problem is that I need to activate the two drivers "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" and "Broadcom STA wireless driver" which appear as unactivated when I go into the hardware drivers admin tools. Unfortunately this netbook (HP Mini Netbook FW376UA) does not have an Ethernet port, so I can't just temporarily hard wire it to activate these drivers.
So my main questions are: 1) How can I activate those drivers without an internet connection?, and 2) Do you think that activating these drivers is indeed the answer to getting the wireless working?

I have a fresh install of 11.04. I am trying to install the "additional drivers" Broadcom STA wireless on my dell laptop. The drivers worked correctly pre-install on the boot up test run, but now they won't activate or uninstall.
On activation attempt, it says : installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log.

I can't get my fglrx drivers activated, every time I try I get an error message. I first tried going into System-->Administration-->Additional Drivers and activating it their but I get this error message: SystemError: installArchives() failed. I tried using some jockey command (my apologies as I can't quite remember the command) and I got the same error message. I was searching around on google and I someone said to type Code: aticonfig --initial Into a terminal and now my computer is running really slowly and I can't get it to run like normal. My windows scroll down in increments, when I try to move a window it jumps around, I can't handle how slowly this thing is going.

So I just recently migrated from Vista to Linux, I'm running Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a HP Pavilion DV6700 with a Broadcom BCM 4312 b/g frequencies wifi adapter. I followed one guide telling me to use the hardware drivers program to activate Broadcom STA wireless driver, but whenever i attempt to do so it says "SystemError: InstallArchives() failed". Can anyone help?? (BTW i am not that adept with the Linux operating as of yet)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm new to OpenSuse. Just installed it in my laptop.. Overall a great distro, I'm just getting trouble with some video aspects. I'm currently using the open-source radeon drivers. However, I can't activate desktop effects (ok..) and video playback looks choppy (sucks, I get like 3 fps). I've already tried some solutions, like installing fglrx driver (which makes my X system buggy) and trying to manually enabling DRI in xorg.conf (which didn't work).
My laptop GPU is an ATI Mobility HD5650.
Currently running OpenSuse 11.3 using KDE Desktop and radeon drivers.

Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again.
However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.

I have both pigeon and empathy working on my laptop, and can chat in both, but i have been wanting to activate my video for both, but apparently it doesn't recognize my webcam. It seems strange as i have skype working perfectly on my system, and can use the video option in it without any problem, so it cant be that my webcam isnt recognized. does anyone know how i can get my webcam working in either or both of these instant messengering services.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my Lenovo B570 in a dual boot config alongside Windows 7. I've downloaded the correct Broadcom STA drivers (the model is Broadcom BCM4313) with another PC, transferred them with a USB stick, installed them with Synaptic and locked the version as was recommended. I've also used the rfkill command to turn off the software block, so both hardware and software switches are OK.
The problem is when I go to the "Additional Drivers" application, it yells at me for not having internet access, and then shows up completely empty. This confuses me because I've manually installed it, so I would think it would show up regardless, but it doesn't. In a final effort to make it happy, I've brought it to work and connected it through the Ethernet, setting up the proxy LAN settings to let it through the firewall. I can get on the web with Firefox with that method, however when I launch "Additional Drivers", it sits there searching for drivers endlessly, so I'm guessing it's not really connected. I feel like I'm really close here - I just need to enable the Broadcom driver, but I can't because "Additional Drivers" won't show it.
It is no longer running my default when I log in it did go screwy yesterday I reinstalled my nvidia driver and it started allowing to to activate it. This is what it was saying:

Compiz is utterly unusable, ever since probably about 9.04 or 9.10, when Ubuntu took out the Catalyst drivers for my laptop w/ Mobility Radeon HD 2300 their less capable open-source variants, which crashes after about 15 minutes of use.
The screen gradually becomes less responsive for about 5 seconds, until it just completely freezes and becomes completely unresponsive to any keyboard or mouse commands. I tried using the RadeonHD drivers instead and the problem is still there. The 'Hardware Drivers' app in System > Administration doesn't seem to do detect any fglrx drivers for my system.
How would I get some working fglrx drivers back?
And I don't want to use Metacity anymore.
Compiz works out of the box in Live systems when run on computers with integrated Intel graphics chips.Is there a way to make it work on system with Nvidia or ATI chips? Even if I have persistence enabled, downloading and installing the drivers does not carry over to the next session and it again throws up a "restricted drivers available/needed" prompt.P.S The purpose of doing this is for demos. Plugging in a live system and letting people play with whizbang effects is the best way to convert them

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Vostro 3300, i5 460 processor with a NVIDIA 310M Graphics Card. I'm doing a KUBUNTU 10.10 (Maverick) install with the following results. The Live CD boots just fine to, "TEST," or "Install." Installation goes fine. However, the graphics card being used is the Intel i915. I have tried installing the NVIDIA drivers directly from the, "Additional Drivers," tool and after the reboot I get through the boot screen to the console. I try to manually startx and I get the errors, "no device found," "no screens found." The second install I tried purging and blacklisting the nouveau drivers and entering safe mode. Then using apt-get install nvidia-current. After that, nvidia-xconfig. Same results.
The third attempt I re-installed and this time downloaded the drivers from the Nvidia site (version 256.53). Blacklisted nouveau, remove all nvidia, updated initramfs, etc. The install went fine however I still end up at a console after boot with the same messages as above. No device found, no screens found. I've tried searching through the forum and web and have tried things like adding the modset option along with many other hacks, tips and fixes. still, no go.I can live with the Intel graphics for now although I lose 512MB of memory. Unfortunately there is no way to disable or change this set-up in the BIOS. I've seen quite a few bug reports at Launchpad:
1. Is this something I should just wait til a fix comes? Will a fix come?
2. Is there, or will there be an official Updated Ubuntu Guide for Maverick to install NVIDIA drivers with this tecnology?
3. Lastly, is there anything else I should try??
I'm trying to install compiz with a completely new install of slackware64-13.37. I had been using gsb gnome2 and compiz 0.8.6 under slackware64-13.1. I installed gsb gnome3 and, to my chagrin, found out that it is incompatible with compiz. I'm afraid I'm not "LEET" enough to install the old gnome (gnome2) pkg by pkg. Which version of compiz did you successfully install and in which desktop?

View 5 Replies View RelatedTwo of the most impressive bits of software I have found yet but... Since I installed compiz, VLC is showing an invisible area where the video should be. It does this with all formats and remains this way even if I switch back to Metacity from Compiz. Basically I can see the frame and decoration for the window but no contents. When I maximise I just get black. Other video apps work fine but I'd like to get my beloved VLC working again if possible. Of course Compiz installation could be unrelated and a red herring.
