Slackware :: Drivers For Slackware And Compatibility Check
Mar 15, 2010
Im trying to get away from the world of M$ into linux and I think slackware is the way to go for me. In particular SW13-64bit. My question is though I dont see many hardware manufacturers supporting SW, but I do see suse and redhat. How hard/possible is it to use redhat suse drivers for slackware? Can they be modified/rebuilt?
Im also considering buying a cheap server off ebay to use. Can someone let me know if any of the following would cause an issue with slackware? In particular the Adaptec sata raid controller which I want to run in raid 5.
Does anyone know if I need to build the proprietary ATI drivers specifically for 32-bit, or do the 64-bit packages take care of 32-bit compatibility? If so, how would I do that?
I tried:
Code:
But the package has the same files as its 64-bit counterpart. The reason I'm asking is I'm trying to get Neverwinter Nights working and a post I found mentioned this problem.
I get a single line error: "Failed to initialize graphics."
I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.
How much support does Slackware have for drivers?I have an Asus motherboard, and the onboard sound doesn't work with Ubuntu, and also it won't recognize my HP printer.Would I have better luck with Slackware?
dd is wiping part of the hard drive( 270GB partition ) with /dev/urandom for quite some hours, is there anyway to check the proccess? like speed of the process etc., I read someone doing that with another drive while having access to other terminal because of the system, but since this is directly from the install dvd, I've no clue if there's anyway to do that or not. I'm asking that mainly because:
1) I prefer run things with some kind of verbose mode
2) I accentaly opened the dvd driver (yes I know, but I forgot the install dvd was inside of it), but I closed it right after it, no errors, but it may have stopped working and has just the _ clicking?
KDE update a number of components in tonights update. When I have gotten this error the past I could simply delete the .kde folder in my home directory and KDE would rebuild one and start. Doesn't work this time.Am I missing something or has something failed to download and install properly
So I closed out X with ctrl+alt+backspace, and when I did startx it showed the Nvidia splash screen like usual, then shows for just a second that loading splash screen that KDE does. Then a little box pops into the top left corner that says "Could not start kdeinit4. Please check installation." I hit okay on the box, it takes me back to the terminal. I try again, same result. I reboot. Same result. So I use xwmconfig to change to enlightenment, which boots up fine. So I ctrl+alt+backspace out and retry KDE again, with the same problem.
This is the first time I've closed out KDE in over a week, so I guess its possible that anything I've done over that time may have somehow broken it. I hadn't noticed any problems til now. The only reason I did it this time was because I'd changed the KDE plasma theme and I wanted to watch the new one boot up. I'm typing on the same computer and the same Slackware installation right now, just running E instead of KDE.
While booting Slackware 13.1 it stops to check sda4 It says something about discrepancies. This started today after leaving the system up overnight. The system was suspended and wouldn't respond. I ended up have to do a hard reboot. The system seems to be working fine, but it does this every time I start Linux. The sda4 partition is Windows XP. XP also is working fine. While Linux is checking sda4 there is a statement that I need to run fsck without options. When I ran fsck I got the following message.
root@b-bhome:~# fsck fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010)
Writing a bash script and I need to check if a known HD partition is mounted or not. I do not think /etc/mtab is the place to check. Would /proc/mounts always work? To make it simple like this : cat /proc/mounts | grep /dev/sdb2
When I boot up my desktop, lilo spends more than a minute printing a string of dots to the screen, before it declares "Bios data check successful" and then loads slackware normally.
I did Code: echo compact >> /etc/lilo.conf lilo but lilo declared that to be a syntax error and is as slow as ever. My lilo/conf contains Code: # LILO configuration file
I know that current just pushed kernel 2.6.33 down, but has anyone been successful in building the nvidia drivers against this new kernel? I'm not having any success with the 190 driver and the 195 beta driver. There are some patches that I found on the nvidia forum, but so far, nothing is working.
I am looking for a driver to use with the Sabrent PCI-G802 WiFi Ethernet card on Slackware. I found a link about this card on LinuxQuestions but the URL mentionned are no longer valid. Slackware does not seem to recognise the card on installation.
I'm booting with Slackware 13.1 x64 My MB is GA-X58A-UD5 rev. 2 but I cant boot. My HD which is connected to the SATA3 port 6 and 7 is not getting detected. It is a Marvell SE9128
How can I tell the Huge.s to load the drivers of this controller?
I have spent over half of the day, literally, trying to get my server to parse perl and be able to use perl scripts to interact with my SQL server. Has anyone been able to get it to work? Only looking for answers to Slackware. There are a lot of resources for FC and Ubuntu, but that does me no good. I checked the Slackbuilds for their builds, and built the libdbi and libdbi-drivers package, but still cannot get it to communicate.
I read somewhere that the compositor of XFCE make a nice effect. But when I activated it became significantly slower. I have a core i7 and a Ati 5730, with the latest Ati drivers.
I need to do something in xorg.conf or another configuration?
I install the ATI drivers yesterday and today I've realised that it broke my sound. I have a HDA nVidia sound card built in (with a Realtek chip), but when I run alsaconf, it doesn't find it. It tries to use either the ATI HDMI audio port or a legacy generic driver. Any hints as to how I can fix this?
How to install this Nvidia Geforce 8800 driver. I've been told that the installation files I got will do everything - it doesn't. I've been told about some kind of xorg.conf file that doesn't exist- xorg.conf-vesa does though, I assume that's vesa drivers and theres something else for other drivers.
I installed the libffado from Slackbuilds.org yesterday on my -current box, and followed the instructions in the README for configuration. After I did that jack wouldn't start at all, insisting that there were no recognized drivers, even when I had the alsa driver selected (alsa is working fine, by the way... I have sound). After doing some more research I uninstalled jack and built Jack2 (1.9.6) from source with the following configure options:
Code: ./waf configure --firewire --alsa --dbus --enable-pkg-config-dbus-service-dir Now when I try to launch jack (regardless of selected driver) I get the following message
I would like to switch to Slackware but I know that generally there are problems with the Realtek 8188ce driver with certain flavors of Linux...this is my question. Is it possible to someway build the drivers needed for the wireless during installation so that I will be able to use it? I do not have access to a wired connection or I would just try to get it working that way.
I am running slackware 13.37. I installed the newest NVIDIA drivers 270.41.19 and now impossible to load Xorg.
I get:
fatal server error:
How I installed the new nvidia drivers: - removepkg xf86-video-nouveau - installed xf86-video-nouveau-blacklist-noarch-1.txz for blacklist the nv drivers - run script nvidia - run nvidia-xconfig - reboot
The startx and black screen with errors messages mentioned above.
I run glxinfo | grep render and i get " Error: Unable to open display". Logical since no Xorg
I run dmesg | grep nvidia and I get all the required fields: - NVIDIA taint kernels - power state - enabling device - PCI INT A - Setting latency
I have to manually copy the errors messages since my PC is not working.
When I run "find /usr/lib -name *.270.* " I do get the module Same thing when I run "find /lib -name nvidia.ko". I see the nvidia.ko module.
I have run into the following problem, after I installed the proprietary AMD/ATI driver for my videocard I've been unable to wake up my laptop after suspend to RAM, it suspends ok (I guess?) but when I try to wake it up the screen doesn't turn on so I have to manually shut down the laptop.
before installing the proprietary driver, it worked ok
the videocard is a Radeon HD 3200, and the processor is an AMD Turion X2 Mobile
So I decided that I would swap over to Slackware on my HP dv2000 notebook as Linux mint wasn't encouraging me to use the command line too much and I decided to get thrown in the deep end with the scripting side of things.
Basically I can't work out how to install WCID off the Slackware DVD, I have gotten as far as extracting it (extracted to /home/ but I am unsure how to execute it, I have read the install docs and can't make much sense of it, could someone possibly help out and pass on the code to install.
I just received my laptop this week and have been tweaking my laptop to acquire more stability. I just installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers for the NVS 3100M chipset and I have a residual windows that wont disappear even after reboot. Even after reinstalling the NVIDIA driver it stays. Is there some way to flush the framebuffer?
