Slackware :: How To Save Needed Modules Config To Create .config?
Apr 9, 2011I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.
My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)
Ubuntu Servers :: Lucid X86 Installation Disk - Gets To 17% Copy On Fs-core-modules-2.6.32.21-generic-di And Hangs
Apr 30, 2010I downloaded the x86 server version for Lucid twice today. Both times before burn the md5 match those published on the Ubuntu site. I am attempting to install the system on a Dell poweredge 2500. 2x 1.4 gb P4 procs, 1 gb ram, 750 GB HDD (raid) Boot to installer. it goes through the standard language checks, keyboard, checks for cdrom, then attempts to start copying files.
It gets to 17% copy on fs-core-modules-2.6.32.21-generic-di and hangs there for 5 minutes or so. Then comes back with the error that it could not get the file and asks if I want to retry. all retries lead back to this error. As I said, MD5 is exact, burner does not complain of a bad burn, and disk is closed at the end of the burn. so, has anyone else been able to install Lucid server x86? burned four disks today, one pair on two different burners. All fail at 17% retrieving that file.
Slackware :: Switch To The Generic Kernel?
Jun 15, 2011One thing I always do is switch to the vmlinuz-generic(-smp) kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and build an initrd (see /boot/README.initrd for details). The "huge" kernel used by default is only meant for installing and not recommended for everyday use. It has a lot of drivers you don't need built-in and uses more RAM than the "generic" kernels.
still trying to find my feet and get to know Slackware. In one of my previous threads, 'things to do after installing' i was told the above message. When i installed, it used the huge kernel, but i'm unsure if that was the one that got installed. when i start slackware up, above the login screen it say, �wecome to Linux 2.6.37.6-smp (tty1)� I was wondering how to swich to the generic smp kernel, do I just change the vmlinuz to the desired, in lilo?

and the default is vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.37.6-smp.
Im trying to switch to vmlinuz-generic-2.6.37.6 So, what I did:

root fs = /dev/sda1

Slackware :: Generic Kernel And Initrd Not Working
Apr 8, 2010I've changed for huge kernel to a generic+initrd setup per the instructions in the README.initrd file however my machine fails to boot using that method. I get the following errors:
/boot/initrd.gz: Loading kernel modules from initrd image:
mount: mouting /dev/sda2 on /mnt failed: No such device
ERROR: No /sbin/init found on rootdev (or not mounted)
1. I've created the initrd using the results from /usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh
mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.1 -f ext4 -r /dev/sda2 -m usbhid:ehci-hcd:ext4 -o /boot/initrd.gz
2. my root fs is ext4 on /dev/sda2
3. I've changed all necessary links in /boot
4. I've changed my /etc/lilo to:
image = /boot/vmlinuz
initrd = /boot/initrd.gz
root = /dev/sda2
label = Linux-Generic
read-only

Sep 19, 2010I am going to change my hardware soon, just a new motherboard and cpu, same sound card,gfx card and other stuff. Will it boot and run ok ( like a live cd/dvd) until I have time to do a reinstall or does it have specific ports the hardware is installed on now?

Mar 20, 2011I was interested in the idea of the btrfs subvolumes, so I made a virtual machine and installed Slackware as per the instructions here: [URL] It all went very well, but when I tried to switch from the huge kernel to the generic kernel and use the initrd.gz generated from step 29 (except that I used 2.6.37.4-smp instead of whatever's there) in lilo.conf, it failed to boot. I also noticed that in the instructions themselves, the poster doesn't actually add the initrd.gz to lilo.conf, so I'm guess the huge kernel has everything it needs to boot properly.

But after booting with the generic kernel AND after having prepared a mkinitrd with the mkinitrd generator, the boot process crashes at ~4sec with a panic.

Mar 15, 2011i'm attempting to configure the vmware server on the above mentioned system,without luck.i can't get the vmmon to compile. I have tried this out-dated guide [URL] but no luck. I have setup made the necessary links as explained in this guide [URL] I haven't managed to try out the any-any patch since no link to the patch is alive anymore.Since slack 13.37 is using 2.6.37.3 kernel I wonder if anyone has found a way to compile the vmware modules on these recent kernels.

Jul 4, 2011I just did a full install of Slackware64 on my netbook. Everything was sweet until I tried switching to the generic kernel. Even before this, I noticed when I ran the mount command it listed not sda3, which really is the root partition, but /dev/root as the root partition. This also appears in mtab, but not fstab. So yeah, here are the errors when I try booting into the generic kernel:

I've tried rebuilding the mkinitrd_command_generator.sh script several times, as well as lilo.conf. But no success I've looked at some similar old threadss here but most of them are related to slackware 12 and older, so I don't know if these issues are related or not.

Slackware :: Boot In Clean Copy Of Slackware 13?
Oct 9, 2010A friend of mine threw me an OLPC (original model with 1GB of storage) that he was trying to put slackware in. He managed to install a minimal installation, but now it asks for the e2fstools (the stuff to run fsck on ext(2/3/4) partitions) which he didn't install (he formatted the "disk" as a single jfs partition). Is there any reason why it would want to have those tools given that there are no ext(2/3/4) type filesystems in that machine? And is there any specific init script (or udev rule) that can be edited to make it not try and check ext(2/3/4) partitions?

I just installed slackware-current from today's update (mirrored from ftp.slackware.com). The program "qtconfig" seems to have saved my changes to "~/.config/Trolltech.conf". However, after restarting qtconfig all options become the defaults.
I verified this in both the C locale and a UTF-8 locale.
Another computer of mine has a -current system from a few months ago and doesn't have this problem.

Feb 8, 2010Well, at first I need to tell that after having big problems (audio, video, modem, network,...) with my venture into slack world at about 7 years ago, I thought that even with my insistence it would be hard to get used with it.
Around the middle of December last year I decided to try again and again I had face some problems (now with fdisk and GPT support in a 64 bit machine).
But now, at about a month after that, I need to say that having passed those initial problems with installation, not only I manage to learn a lot about linux in general (dependencies, rc. editing, permissions, groups...) as I am amazing to what Slackware became.
From 3D graphics acceleration in KDE (with an easy config for my video card, something I thought it would be impossible and that makes it by far better looking than any Windows Desktop fancy try), to great programs and suites integration like Amarok, OpenOffice, Ktorrent, THE firefox, and so many others all allied with the full control of the system (no automatic updates, no mysterious packages UNLESS I really allow it) not to tell g++, python and so on.
However, besides a raid 0 non readable partition, I am having a persistent problem with my wireless that always mix my pppoe connection when I try to config it via rc.inet1 (or rc.wireless ...).To better explain my situation I have a computer with Asus P5k-e/Wifi-AP with came with an integrated wireless device (Realtek RTL8187L).Also, the way I work out to connect to the internet was through (an ethernet) pppoe connection setup using pppoe-setup.Right now it is working like a charm after pppoe-start and stop commands.
At about a month, when i was starting my first steps to config my machine, I tried to follow [URL] three times, and in two of those I manage to start my wireless, but in all it mixed up with my pppoe connection and since either pppoe-config as pppoe-setup didn't work after that (even after backup the files) I had to reinstall the whole system. (Yes, I know that probably there is an workaround easier via shell or file editing, but since every time I need to restart in the Windows, search for solution on internet, print those I find, restart, and try in slackware again, I decided that reinstalling was the fast solution for me at that time.)Now, I am a bit more confident with my knowledge of the linux and decided to try to setup wireless again.
After an extensive search in the forum, I found out two major solutions: One pointing to alienwiki (with I really think is the best approach besides my previous experience) and other pointing to the proper realtek driver at [URL]As i am yet trying to decide which method use, I download the driver and it came with an strange file (RadioPower.sh) that are called by wlan0up. Slackware :: Config Option For Usb Wifi Rt2x00 Modules?
Jan 5, 2010I have a system using a Linksys WUSB54B usb wifi adapter that needs the rt2x00/rt2500 modules. Using the fresh install kernel, 2.6.29.6-smp, the modules are there and I get my interface up.
But, when I configure my own kernel, not an smp system, I cannot find the .config option in the menu for rt2x00 network adapter support and the modules are not in /lib/modules/vmlinuz-2.6.29.6-first directory tree after a "make modules_install".
I looked through the configuration menu, but could find no reference to the rt2x00 drivers.

Slackware :: System All The Time Creates /.config/Trolltech.conf?
Apr 18, 2011I am on up to date 64-current. Installed Alien Bob's multilib packages on top of it as well as his kde packages. I changed inittab to go to runlevel 4 by default.I figured out that my system all the time creates /.config/Trolltech.confI think it shouldn't be there, but even when I manually delete /.config dir, it is created again.
