Slackware :: System All The Time Creates /.config/Trolltech.conf?
Apr 18, 2011
I am on up to date 64-current. Installed Alien Bob's multilib packages on top of it as well as his kde packages. I changed inittab to go to runlevel 4 by default.I figured out that my system all the time creates /.config/Trolltech.confI think it shouldn't be there, but even when I manually delete /.config dir, it is created again.
Code:
vladimir@darkstar:~$ ls -la /

Now that I have system-config-display installed I tried to create a new xorg.conf so I can have 3D acceleration, etc using the correct driver. But the xorg.conf file generated does not work. It locks up the laptop (Toshiba Satellite A45-S250). I don't understand why this happens because the Fedora 12 Live CD (for i686) works find on boot.
I tried looking for the xorg.conf file after booting the live CD but it doesn't exist. I don't understand what is happening here. Also, when I used an older version of Fedora (8 I think) the X driver was i810 which worked fine. It gave me all the 3D acceleration, etc. When I installed F11 it gave me a dumbed down install using the VESA driver. What happened to the i810 driver? Why does the intel driver not work? Why does the Live CD work great but an installed system not?
Necessary info: Toshiba Satellite A45-S25 Fedora 12 (preupgraded from F11)

I could not find an answer to this. I can connect to the internet no problem after I edit the connection name to NETGEAR instead of our last name. After a while it looks like it renews the connection and created a new one with the wrong name. The connection drops. It looks to me it is not using the same wireless connection each time but creating new ones that do not work for the above mentioned reason. What can I do to stop the loop and have it use the same connection always?

I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.
My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)

I'm writing a C++ application and need to work with process substitution in the Bash shell. I'm trying to find a way to validate the paths passed as arguments to my program, some of which point to FIFO files created by process substitution.
Is there a shell (or C++) way that I can check if the system creates these files in /dev/fd or if they are created somewhere else?

I just upgraded an 11.1 install to 11.2. The upgraded system appears fully functional but I get many "all config files need .conf" warning messages during boot. See below. I also did a clean install on another system to compare and the clean install does not exhibit the same behavior so the warnings are evidently related to it being an upgrade. The system's working but I would like to understand why this is happening and clean it up. This system provides some key services to my networks and I have spent a lot of time getting this and the systems it interacts with "just right" under 11.1 and I am not particularly interested in starting over except as a last resort.

I have installed ClamAV 0.95.3 into Ubuntu 9.10 (i386) fully patched
I am behind an authenticating proxy, so I've entered these details into freshclam.conf:
HTTPProxyServer myproxy.com
HTTPProxyPort 1234
HTTPProxyUsername myusername
HTTPProxyPassword mypass
code....
So I changed the perms to 0700 (user is clamav).
Now I get:
$ sudo freshclam
ERROR: Can't open/parse the config file /etc/clamav/freshclam.conf
I checked DNS resolution with this (which I found in a thread somewhere):
# host database.clamav.net
database.clamav.net is an alias for db.local.clamav.net.
db.local.clamav.net is an alias for db.other.clamav.net.
db.other.clamav.net has address 193.1.193.64
db.other.clamav.net has address 130.59.10.36
- I presume the installation can find the update site?

I have a linux (Slackware) machine and the time/date is like, June 23rd 2003, 10:00am (It's 11 here) and I am not able to set the time to have it correct. I change the timezome to Montreal but the time is still wrong.
Is there a way to force it to sync with my domain controler or even another online NTP server?

All i'd like to split my squidGuard.conf into 3 differents config files. The idea is that, I want 1 config file for src definition (my users), 1 config file for dest definition and 1 file for acl definition. And all of these files will be include in squidGuard.conf.

I am trying to use three monitors with two video cards on Fedora 13:
$ lspci | grep -i vidia
07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV41 [Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI] (rev a2)
0c:02.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200] (rev a1)
$
The Quadro dual-card has no problem driving two 19" monitors, but the GeForce will not wake the third 17" monitor from power save mode. The BIOS indicates that the Quadro is the primary card. I am trying to use Xinerama to activate the GeForce. So far I have only seen the GeForce and 17" monitor work if the Quadro is physically removed. In all cases I have been using nouveau. I'll attach my xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and smoltprofile.txt. My xorg.conf shows two monitors: monitor0 (19") and monitor1 (17"). monitor0 is actually two identical monitors which the quadro treats as one large monitor.

I am running my Ubuntu 32 bit server on top of Windows 7 64 bit with VirualBox. It's a 2 core Atom. It's been working good for about half a year. But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:
Code:
hwclock --hctosys
I want to run a crontab to have that command run every minute. But it don't seem to run.

Sorry if this was well covered here when most up-to-date Slackers moved to 13.0, but I have just jumped from 12.1 to 13.1. Generally very happy that I do not have to think about xorg.conf as I always found the structure of this conf file a tad confusing. However if I do need to (for example) change my video driver (I might for example want to try the nvidia driver from NVIDIA) or configure my touchpad - how do I do this ?
I understand that xorg.conf can still be created. If I do so, do I have to put all the stuff in that used to be there or can I just add the stuff I need to make the changes I am looking for?

I've been running arch linux, with my clock set to UTC with no problem. Recently I installed slackware on a different partition. During the setup I chose to set my clock to 'local time' instead of UTC by accident. Now in slackware my clock shows the wrong time. Also in arch it shows the same wrong time.
I booted back into slackware and ran pkgtool to enter the setup again, and changed my time to UTC. But this makes no difference. My clock is still wrong in both slackware and arch. Do I need to reboot after changing my clock settings in slackware before it takes effect? how the clock or the setup works.
