Slackware :: /dev/root Mounting & Booting Into The Generic Kernel Failed?

I just did a full install of Slackware64 on my netbook. Everything was sweet until I tried switching to the generic kernel. Even before this, I noticed when I ran the mount command it listed not sda3, which really is the root partition, but /dev/root as the root partition. This also appears in mtab, but not fstab. So yeah, here are the errors when I try booting into the generic kernel:
Code: mounting /dev/sda3 on /mnt failed: No such device No /sbin/init found on rootdev (or not mounted) bin/sh: cant access tty: job control turned off
I've tried rebuilding the mkinitrd_command_generator.sh script several times, as well as lilo.conf. But no success I've looked at some similar old threadss here but most of them are related to slackware 12 and older, so I don't know if these issues are related or not.

I've installed Slackware64 on a Toshiba Qosmio laptop (booting with ext4, SAMSUNG HM500JI HDD, 3 GB Ram, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, Intel chipset and graphics).The system boots the huge kernel just fine. But after booting with the generic kernel AND after having prepared a mkinitrd with the mkinitrd generator, the boot process crashes at ~4sec with a panic.

im a rookie at configuring linux and i have problem booting slackware 13.1 just installed. i get a message similar to this Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown- block(8,4) i got this one from another user who has a similar problem, they say i should fix lilo.conf and it actually was pointing to a wrong partition so i fixed it. i also fixed /etc/fstab to make it point to the right partition /dev/sda3. but after fixing the files, it still wants to load something in /dev/sda4, i dont know why so what should i do next, please explain with commands and not just words. edit this is my lilo.conf

An old machine in our office, running Ubuntu 6.06 all of a sudden will not boot up. I get the following info during boot:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok Booting the kernel
mount: Mounting /root/sda1 /root failed: No such device
mount: Mounting /root/dev on /dev/.static/dev failed: No such file or directory

I haven't changed anything on the system as far as I'm aware, and I ran some HD diagnostics and everything seems fine. however when I try to mount the drive with the following command:
sudo mount -t ext3 -o rw /dev/hda1 /mnt
I get the following error:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad
superblock on /dev/sda1, missing code
page or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in
syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
I ran fdisk -l and it says the partition type is Linux. The output after running dmesg | tail :

One thing I always do is switch to the vmlinuz-generic(-smp) kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and build an initrd (see /boot/README.initrd for details). The "huge" kernel used by default is only meant for installing and not recommended for everyday use. It has a lot of drivers you don't need built-in and uses more RAM than the "generic" kernels.
still trying to find my feet and get to know Slackware. In one of my previous threads, 'things to do after installing' i was told the above message. When i installed, it used the huge kernel, but i'm unsure if that was the one that got installed. when i start slackware up, above the login screen it say, �wecome to Linux 2.6.37.6-smp (tty1)� I was wondering how to swich to the generic smp kernel, do I just change the vmlinuz to the desired, in lilo?

I've changed for huge kernel to a generic+initrd setup per the instructions in the README.initrd file however my machine fails to boot using that method. I get the following errors:
/boot/initrd.gz: Loading kernel modules from initrd image:
mount: mouting /dev/sda2 on /mnt failed: No such device
ERROR: No /sbin/init found on rootdev (or not mounted)
1. I've created the initrd using the results from /usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh
mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.33.1 -f ext4 -r /dev/sda2 -m usbhid:ehci-hcd:ext4 -o /boot/initrd.gz
2. my root fs is ext4 on /dev/sda2
3. I've changed all necessary links in /boot
4. I've changed my /etc/lilo to:
image = /boot/vmlinuz
initrd = /boot/initrd.gz
root = /dev/sda2
label = Linux-Generic

I am going to change my hardware soon, just a new motherboard and cpu, same sound card,gfx card and other stuff. Will it boot and run ok ( like a live cd/dvd) until I have time to do a reinstall or does it have specific ports the hardware is installed on now?

I was interested in the idea of the btrfs subvolumes, so I made a virtual machine and installed Slackware as per the instructions here: [URL] It all went very well, but when I tried to switch from the huge kernel to the generic kernel and use the initrd.gz generated from step 29 (except that I used 2.6.37.4-smp instead of whatever's there) in lilo.conf, it failed to boot. I also noticed that in the instructions themselves, the poster doesn't actually add the initrd.gz to lilo.conf, so I'm guess the huge kernel has everything it needs to boot properly.

My Slackware boots using the huge kernel. I am not using LILO; I am using GRUB from the extras directory on the DVD. I followed the tutorial @ [URL] up to the point where it discusses modifying LILO. My /boot/grub/menu.lst reads, in part:
# Linux bootable partition config begins
title Slackware Linux on (/dev/sda7)
root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 ro vga=normal
# Linux bootable partition config ends
This boots the huge kernel. What changes must I make to the above menu.lst entry to boot using the generic kernel?

i'm attempting to configure the vmware server on the above mentioned system,without luck.i can't get the vmmon to compile. I have tried this out-dated guide [URL] but no luck. I have setup made the necessary links as explained in this guide [URL] I haven't managed to try out the any-any patch since no link to the patch is alive anymore.Since slack 13.37 is using 2.6.37.3 kernel I wonder if anyone has found a way to compile the vmware modules on these recent kernels.

I installed ubuntu 10.04 from the CD (downloaded from ubuntu website), all worked very well. until today that I decided to run the software updater. It installed all the updates correctly, I restarted ok, but i experienced a mini locks, for example when i was with firefox, firefox had mini hangs for about 15 seconds then run normally. Then all OS got unstable, windows showing no thing, for example when i tried to restart using the button, it didnot do anything. Well i reset my computer and BOOM!, im stuck after Grub showing me this:

mount : mounting /sys on /root/sys failed : No such file or directory
mount : mounting /proc on /root/proc failed : No such file or directory

I'm able to reproduce this. I installed a fresh 10.4 again, then installed propietary drivers (nvidia), restart, all working flawless here, then updating all packages using the update-manager, restart, here not all working well (same sympthoms) so i decided to restart, then BOOM AGAIN.. I did the process 3 times and, the same, so I think something is BROKEN. So im able to reproduce it but don't know what the hell is causing it.

I placed Ubuntu on the same drive as my windows XP is, and there were no problems, everything was fine, all drivers were working...I need to use kernel 2.6.29 and i read about "how to install a new kernel" on this forum. I downloaded 3 files, I installed them in a good sequence. After reboot I can choose between 3 kernels, and if I choose this, then there is a mounting problem:
mounting none on /dev failed
Afterthat there is written something else, what I cant read. Some seconds later ubuntu boots, but my (non-USB) mouse isnt working.

I have recently experienced a problem that occurred after an automatic update. After the update it said restart system. So I did and proceeded as normal. when after the reboot Firefox suddenly stopped working, crashed and upon clicking it again only a blank box appeared. Then my other apps followed and i soon couldn't do anything so i shut down my computer. Upon restart I got a black screen with tons of text and something around the lines of

mount: mounting / sys/ on root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: No such file or dirctory

So I rebooted and pressed shift to open that grub thing and booted from an earlier kernel. This time it said checking HD for errors and after booted normally. Everything seemed fine but next day it did it again. Starting with Firefox crashing and then everything else. I again booted from a previous kernel and it worked but upon checking with uname -a it did not list the kernel i chose to boot from. So I decided to upgrade 10.04 to 10.10. This upgraded my kernel and deleted the old ones so i am hoping i am good now.

I'm currently trying to setup Slackware 13.7 on a server, using software RAID 1. I'm using the README_RAID.TXT document at the root of the Slackware disc as a reference. Anyway, here's what I have so far.
/dev/md1 -> /boot partition
/dev/md2 -> swap partition
/dev/md3 -> / partition

After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 I have had some problems booting my Ubuntu. It all started when restarting after the upgrade, and I got the error;

No init found. Try passing init= boot arg
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3.1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)(initramfs) After searching the Internet, I found a "solution". I just had to boot with a USB stick with the Ubuntu Rescue Remix (the normal Ubuntu USB won't boot either), and i wrote;

sudo fsck /dev/sdb5
Now I could start my Ubuntu again. So whats the problem? If I turn off my computer the normal way, there is no problem, but if I log off, put it into sleep mode, if something happens and I have to turn it off with the button it goes back to the first problem, and I have to reboot it with the USB stick and fix it all over again! If I don't have the USB stick with me, I probably wont be able to use my laptop!

Doesn't seem to matter which version, every time I try to install Software raid on an Ubuntu server system, it blows up with this error. Seems I've had trouble for several versions.

I've done it on Centos Fine, and followed the many different instructions I've seen for Ubuntu. The only luck I've had was with bios raid, but I would much rather let Mdadm handle things.

I install both as letting Ubuntu decide partitions for one drive, do the same for the other, and create a raid, and do them from scratch. No dice, same problem. I've tried that one as logical and as primary too. No difference. Something just doesn't like booting from a raid 1 Mirror. I've tried installing grub on both HDDs (sda1 + sdb1)I've tried several CDs, burned from several machines. Re-downloaded from Torrent and from the website. The DVD drives work since I purchased new DVD drives for both one workstation and the server. Things install fine under CentOS, software raid comes up.

Okay, so on occasion when I boot into ubuntu I get this error

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

I am trying to replace an old, smaller, and dying laptop hard drive with a newer one, using a USB external drive. I first tried cloning disk to disk with Clonezilla, but it failed after cloning my root, swap, and /home directories it froze when it tried to reinstall grub. After 2x trying, I switched to dd, which I have never really used (I am fairly new to Linux in general). The actual command I used was:

All seemed ok and after approximately 2 hours my 80GB drive had been cloned onto my new 250GB, with dd giving what appeared to be a satisfactory closure summary. I tried to mount and access the drive from my external USB enclosure but could not view it, though the data is there, I believe, as the size and bytes show... The error that Dolphin is giving me is:

I thought that dd copied bit for bit, and I added the noerrorï just to try to get it all transferred, so I don't know what went wrong exactly, though something seems wrong with grub and the bootloader, I guess...

Recently I installed a Linux distro (Pardus) which boots using initramfs. I am completely novice here. In the former configuration I used lilo to boot OpenBSD, Debian and W2k (it is easy for me to configure lilo to boot OpenBSD). But initramfs is a something completely new for me. As I understand it is a virtual file system with a standard directory tree and the information stored on that system is used (to boot the kernel?) to mount the true (physical) root device. The first question is how to properly describe a system (kernel image) booted with initramfs in the lilo.conf.

I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 under Windows 7 (Is this call WUBI?) without any problems for a while. My other machines only run Ubuntu (9.04 & 10.04). I decided to give it a try to the latest Ubuntu 10.10. I get the screen asking if I need to enter anything press enter the dots run across the bottom of the screen then jump to the top and machine dies after line "Booting kernel" even the 'elephants can't get it to move' power off is only option other dvd's are bootable including ones burnt on this machine after the 13.1 dvd

I just rebuild the kernel for slackware 13, everything works, but root file system which is ext3 is mounted as ext2. Normally I've build ext3, ext4 and so on as modules, not in the kernel... but if I do this, then the kernel mounts the file system as ext2, which is build in the kernel. I also modified rc.modules so I can make sure that ext3,ext4,jbd are loaded, but it doesnt work.

today I updated my Slackware 13.0 to 13.1. Unfortunately it didn't boot any longer. I probably forgot to run "lilo" before restarting. However, I reinstalled Slackware and I installed grub instead of lilo I'm more familiar with it..
This was my first menu.lst config:

I download "VirtualBox-3.1.2-56127-Linux_amd64.run" and installed it, and got a messages like this " virtualbox have been installed successfully in my system", but when I run virtualbox, I've been told "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" something like that. And I run virtualbox in terminal, got this:
Warning: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.29.6) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.
I run "/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv start" as a root, got messages like this :

I tried to compile a 2.6.33 kernel following Alien's guide.
I pretty much used the default values for every (NEW) option avaiable. I used "make localmodconfig" on my current config (zcat /proc/config.gz) and then tried to use "make menuconfig" to check if I could change anything. I didn't understand most of the options, so I skipped it. Then I used "make bzImage modules" and "make modules_install", copied the files mentioned on the wiki and run lilo.
But when I try to boot using my custom kernel, it gives an error like "Cannot remount read-only filesystem as read-write! This can cause serious problems."
If I try to continue the boot, it hangs when trying to launch the syslog script...
The new kernel entry on lilo.conf is:

just like the default kernel entry.
By the way, one thing I changed is the kernel compression format, which I set LZMA. But it didn't seem to be the problem, since it at least started...

Just the last day or so, I've noticed a long pause when I boot my laptop, with lots of disk activity. dmesg says:

Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? I have been dual booting "Windoz" (hda1) and slackware 11 (RTAI - hda 5) old system. The problem happen after I installed slackware 13(sda8) on the same hard drive. I was able to mount my old slack11 (now (sda5)) to slack13 to read. So I wanted to boot to slack11.
MY Lilo on slack 13:
Now when I boot to Slackware11 I get:

How can I boot a old "hda" image on "sda" system. With a floppy I can go back to Slackware11.
