Slackware :: Automatic Logins To Virtual Console Using "a C Login Program" Method
Mar 23, 2010
I've been using this howto to set up automatic logins to virtual console using "a C login program" method. In slackware64-current updated till january it prompted me to enter a password before logging in, while now after installing latest updates and kde 4.3.5 from current it logs in automatically without any prompting.

How to change the console login prompt settings in slackware 13.1 x64? I tried googling but couldnt find anything, maybe I dont know what it's called.. I mean when the system boot and boots into console asking login info, how to reset the console to new page/clear screen(clearing all the boot up info lines) before it prompts to login. Like for example if after logged into a tty I type exit, I want the screen to refresh(reset?) such that all screen info is cleared and only login prompt is shown on the top left of the screen, like in fedora shell prompt.

Is there a way to lock out logins at the console? I ask this because I can not login at the console but can remotely login to the system via ssh. I'm guessing I blindly implemented a security option and didn't know what I was doing when I did it.

I have sometimes wished to place a reminder, to be displayed after I login. And what I did was to write it in /etc/motd or in /etc/issue. But something in the system erases or writes a new motd/issue.What would be the easiest way to have a reminder printed on the console just after login?

- is there a way to set the default user in console login so that all needed is to press enter(or event without it) to be able to input the password for that user - also is it possible to console login without password, by just inputting user name and pressing enter how to put startx for that user right on login, so that the user doesn't input the command manually

I like the asterisks appearing when I key in my password when logging in.
The new /bin/login program (from the shadow package in a) on SL13.1 no longer accepts the GETPASS_ASTERISKS value in /etc/login.defs.
I want to recompile the old SL13.0 version and replace the new SL13.1 version with the recompiled old SL13.0 version.

Failed login attempts are logged to syslog with the user id or login id set to UNKNOWN_USER or UNSET.Anybody know if this is configurable. I would rather it just pass the actual id that the user used. Doesn't matter if it exist or not, just want to know if someone is guessing at user names and what those user names are

I wrote a code for login verification..I got output with GET. But I need output with POST since it is more secure. Any error in my code.
javascript code:
var xml;
function verifyusernamepasswd(pass)
{ //pass is password that will be passed as parameter
xml=new XMLHttpRequest();
var url="http://localhost/loginvalidate.php";
var para="q="+username+"&p="+pass;//username is global
xml.setRequestHeader("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
xml.setRequestHeader("Content-length", para.length);
xml.setRequestHeader("Connection", "close");
xml.open("POST",url,true);
xml.onreadystatechange=statechanged1;
xml.send(para);
} .....
The verification does not return anything, cos my alert is not displayed at all.

I tried to set up an automatic program restart on Debian Lenny for fail2ban and asterisk. Google helped me to find some HowTos. However, all what I tried so far doesn't work. The latest version: According some instructions the following commands have been written in a file called auto_start_stop:
Code: #! /bin/sh
-> saved in the folder /etc/init.d and
-> its properties changed with a right-click to 075.
-> The links have been created with update-rc.d auto_start_stop defaults
Why this doesn't work and how I could correct it?

I tried to search the internet for this, a program that deletes files in the computer. However, I can't find one.What happened to me is, I clean up folder files individually. I was hoping that a program where, if there is a file that should be deleted in a lapse of a particular time, it will automatically do so.

Something I find myself doing every once in a while is using Ctrl-Alt-F[x] to switch out to a virtual terminal, and the Alt-F7-ing back to X without logging out.
While I don't anticipate that too many people that might have access to my computer would know how to switch consoles, there is still some degree of security risk provided by a logged-in console session. I've found vlock, but that seems to lock the console immediately when called, rather than running as a daemon that locks inactive consoles. (Even it's -t option just gives a timeout before an optional (and separate) text-mode screensaver package activates, rather than an inactivity timeout).
Is there any vlock-like package out there that provides the timed locking services for text consoles that XScreenSaver provides for X? Either a lock on timeout or a lock on switchaway setup would be adequate.

ve read some stuff regarding problems with virtual consoles not appearing for some graphics settings, but I think this problem is different.Just a few days ago I had no problem using ctrl-alt-f6 (for example) to get to a virtual console outside of the normal X environment. That no longer works. Nothing happens, no distorted screen, I'm just stuck in the normal X session that comes up as if I did nothing. I didn't make any configuration changes, though I suppose some update could have caused it?I may have read that this is some problem in grub2? If so, is there a way I can get around it without trying to switch back to grub1? I'd rather not mess too much with the bootloaders if I don't have to

Something has caused me to be locked out of root; the KDE login screen now says "root logins are not allowed." It's not as though I don't know the password--I set it up. I might have deleted something I'm not supposed to, because before this, root had also become invisible at the KDE login screen.

virtual console (run level 3,5) screen resolution. After installing fed12 the resolution is higher(which is good) then in previous versions. After upgrading from 11 -> 12 the resolution of the virtual consoles stays the same, to large. I already compared grub.conf,i18n which are the same. Where is the resolution configuration for fed 11,12?

I'm currently having trouble getting a desktop to run Ubuntu.Booting up the Ubuntu Live disk delivers the error (There was an unresolvable error.Dropping you into a live environment).After the Live CD boots I'm able to partition/install from within Gnome.I proceeded to install 10.04 and update the system.After updating everything and the kernel I lose the ability to boot the system as it will totally freeze just as it auto-logs in.I'm unable to drop into a virtual console.
I tried the alternative CD thinking it would help and every install/test option besides MemTest86+ displays the crypic: Floppy Unknown Error(233)I don't use a floppy and this error doesn't show up anywhere, but in a dapper bug report.The bios is configured correctly.The HD (I've tried two) and memory are in good condition.
