I can't track down..On most of my Slackware -current installs (I have 6 installs altogether) I can no longer get conky to adjust via .conkyrc Conky from SlackBuilds The problem is for some reason it's stuck at top of screen, with the whole upper-half not visible off screen.. I have tried adjusting .conkyrc, tried uninstalling/reinstalling tried adjusting how it starts in .fluxbox/startup all to no avail. I am starting it with either
conky -d
conky &
conky -d &
all the same result. Somehow I "fixed" one of the installs, and tried the same "fix" on the others and it didn't work..I am also trying to start either fbpanel or lxpanel either before or after conky...same results Is there another app (not gkrellm) that will do same as conky?
Somehow I've managed to break evolution, since it no longer does email, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling from the fedora 14 dvd and repos. attached is a screenshot to show you what it currently looks like
I'm having an issue with samba and trying to reinstall it. I uninstalled samba with this command }sudo apt-get remove samba or sudo apt-get purge samba
After either one of these steps, i noticed that the /etc/samba/ directory still existed, which was odd since I thought i uinstalled samba. So, I proceeded to remove all of the fiels within the /etc/samba/ directory and removed the samba directory as well. After this, I tried to reinstall samba with this command: sudo apt-get install samba
After this installation step, the /etc/samba directory does not exist and neither does the smb.conf file and other files within he /etc/samba directory exist after installation. When I type : testparm -s
I get the following message: Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf rlimit_max: rlimit_max (1024) below minimum Windows limit (16384) params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf": No such file or directory Error loading services. I'm trying to get my samba up and running again.
installed a couple things with Winetricks and it told me to uninstall the Samyak/Oriya font because it causes problems with some .net applications. It told me to use
Code:
But I'm not sure if I should install dpkg specifically to do this, or if there's a native slackware way to remove this.
How do I uninstall unwanted applications? Is there a log of all installed applications? When I ran setup and chose my packages, for KDE, and I am sure others the options came in bundles, ie KDEbase-version... Is there a way to see all package contents to remove individual programs?
I'm dualbooting Slackware and Gentoo on my homeserver. Some weeks ago I built grub with a slackbuild-script, it was the new version of grub but it did not install properly. Since then I could only boot Slackware but not Gentoo. Today I tried to install grub from the Gentoo-partition (I chrooted to Gentoo). This did not work due to an errormessage of grub that "stage1 could not be read".
Afterwards I tried to install lilo, this failed at first attempt, but the with some warnings lilo executed. When I rebooted after the lilo-install, I had grub again at the bootscreen without the option to boot Gentoo. I decided that I have to clean the mbr of /dev/sda and found a solution with the dd command. Here my

Fortunately I have a second disk /dev/sdb in the server and have now installed the bootloader on the mbr of /dev/sdb. But in the long run I want to change this.
procedure or instructions on how to reinstall the X server or upgrade it to the latest? Every time I played around with X I screwed up things good... I think it got corrupted and I have display problems that I cant fix, so far everything points to a software problem, probably X server...If you need more background info:
how to uninstall packages via the program name? For example, if I want to uninstall the program "KWordQuiz" then I would usually have to use the command removepkg -package name But unfortunately I have a fresh install and want to get rid of a lot of programs. So instead of using the package repository and finding each package which would take days (maybe) and removing them individually I'd like to remove a program and all its supporting packages. I am probably just rambling on... Umm, so yes is there a way, or do I have to suck it up and sit at the keyboard for days.
I was up late the other night and decided to get conky going on my desktop. Well, I must have skipped some steps because I can't find any conkyrc file (not even the example) but I can run conky from the terminal. I'd like to make some changes to it but I can't seem to figure out where to do that. I did find an example conkyrc file on the faq on the conky website.Do I need to purge conky and start over?
This conkyrc is for 4 core modern intel cpus, i believe, please check code. any correctional errors appreciated as well as my personal feature request. its also only suited for 1680x1050 or greater.
Attached are the .conkyrc and weather/cpu optimization files for intel i7 processors for a correct average. i hope it was written correctly. if anyone can improve upon this conkyrc i would appreciate it. just followup. i have a personal feature request i was hoping someone could do for me. i would like to get rid of the weather section and include a Banshee -------------
i tried to search for possible tweak in getting conkyForecast connect via proxy server. it connects and functions well when directly connected to internet (from home) but in office, i have to connect via proxy... how i go about tweaking the script to connect via proxy?
have a dell Inspiron 1501 with ubuntu 10.0.4 I want to rename my wireless card from eth1 to wlan0 as I use conkyrc and it will not read my wireless strength or my ssid cuz it thinks it's a ethernet card and not wireless card. I know this for a fact because peppermint os my wireless card was wlan0 and it worked just fine.
I've had this problem across several versions of Ubuntu and other distributions as well, and nobody has ever been able to fix the issue. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7829 with Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. Ubuntu detects the make/model of the laptop on install because it tries to name the computer accordingly. My CPU fan speed is always stuck on next to zero. It's just "barely" running at all.
I did a:
Code:
And got
Code:
I'm unable to make any changes to this file even as root. Can anybody lend me a hand at all? The problem is that any time I do "anything" somewhat CPU intensive my video card and cpu begin to heat up rapidly and I can't really get them to cool off. I don't have this issue with Windows, and the CPU fan is clean and clear of dirt/dust.
Using a new Ubuntu 9.10 install with Wubi. I go into System > Preferences > Mouse and adjust the sensitivity bars and acceleration with no effect. Anyone got an idea for how to adjust this? It's too slow.
After installing Fedora 14, I can't seem to make my screen brightness go above the absolute minimum. I've tried editing /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to change the current setting from 20 to 100, but I can't save it, even when logged in as su, it returns "Invalid Argument" when I try to enter the filename of where to save. What do I do?
I have a 4gb USB thumb drive with Ubantu 9 on it and it looks like I have over 3gb free but I only have 4mb free in the documents Directory. w do I increase the size of the directory so I can add my Doc files?
i got an AOC 18" lcd, the instructions that came with it, are only for Windows and Macs, if i press a button at the base of it, a square appears with all the pictures to configure including brightness, but i can't click on the screen. The cd that came with the monitor, i assume only works with Windows/Mac, i haven't inserted it for fear of screwing up.
PS: when i pass the mouse over the square, the pointer disappears.
The image on my external monitor is blurry. the resolution is right, but the Monitors menu shows the monitor to be a 20" while it is actually a 19". So this may be a hint. I would like to know how to adjust the monitor size (if possible). How can this be done? I am running 10.4 on a dell precision 4400, connecting with the monitor via VGA.
Ahm my question is, how can i adjust or redo the size of my hard disk in ubuntu? i mean i have the windowsXP OS then decided to install ubuntu 10.04 so i install it inside windows... i forgot to adjust the size or something?? because every time i boot ubuntu my free storage was 5 gb... but the real size of my HDD is 112gb in HOST directory but when im looking in home directory/home folder its shows that 5gb remaining, so what am i going to do? And what is my mistake?
i ran into a problem while isntalling xine player on fedora 11, i first of all installed its core engine 'xine-lib' successfully with standard prefix! when i run the './configure' for its frontend (xine-ui) it gives this error.
No package 'libxine' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XINE_CFLAGS and XINE_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.See the pkg-config man page for more details.
I added a directory to the $PATH variable in /etc/profile. This works for my user account but not for root. It's easy to add it to my /root/.bashrc but I would like to understand whats's wrong. It's a widely unmodified Debian 6 so I think my changes should do the trick.
Here is what my /etc/profile looks like:
# /etc/profile: system-wide .profile file for the Bourne shell (sh(1)) # and Bourne compatible shells (bash(1), ksh(1), ash(1), ...). if [ "`id -u`" -eq 0 ]; then

Edit: The path I added is the distcc-stuff. Here is what echo $PATH tells me:
I've been working on tightening up my firefox display. I've managed to cut down the vertical scrollbar. Anyone know how to do the same with the horizontal scroll bar. See screenshot? I'm running this on an eeepc 701 (hence the small screen size).
From my userchrome.css /* hide vertical scrollbar */ notificationbox { overflow-x: hidden; } browser[type="content-primary"], browser[type="content-targetable"] { overflow-y: scroll; margin-right: -12px; /* 12px == width of my scrollbar */ }
I am running a dual boot conifg with OSX and Ubuntu PPC (karmic) on a 2004 G5 and everything is working pretty well - very well actually. The last thing I am trying to adjust is such a simple thing, but I just can't seem to get it. In Ubuntu, the screen position is shifted to the right, covering the scroll bar of windows and the trash can.
No problem, just use xvidtune, adjust the screen as I want and create a custom modeline right? Well, it does not seem to work. Here is what I did:Using xrandr I created a --newmode and then used --addmode to add it to the output I am using (default):
Code:
mieren@G5-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output default --newmode 1680x1050_new 146.25 1680 1820 1996 2268 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync mieren@G5-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1050
[code]....
Notice how the new mode now lacks the rest of the config information specified in the --newmode above, not sure if this is normal.I can change to the new mode, and the resolution is correct, but the screen is still not adjusted. There is no difference switching between the 1680x1050 and the 1680x1050_new modes - the screen may flash, but the position does not change.
(I also tried adding a mode line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf screen section, but it also has no effect. Actually, there was no xorg.conf existing at all, so I created a minimal one.)It is really annoying to have to adjust the screen position using the monitor controls on every reboot.
I am facing problems when trying to install gtk+, I have downloaded all the required libraries, but the following output?

I installed Fedora 11 I386 DVD. I use firefox. Usually, I will go through some websites in Chinese. The Chinese characters can be recognized and displayed. However, there are several font sizes and font types in the same line. Usually, the last character is much smaller than others.
I have Fedora 15 gnome 3 installed on my new laptop. When my system runs on battery my power management keeps changing my screen brightness. It keeps dimming my backlight. In the GUI of Power Management I cant find any option to change this setting. How can I do that through Command Line
Is there a way to restrict users that are logged into the shell via SSH/Telnet/SFTP from using the 'cd' command to move into certain directories, yet not use the chmod command to do it? For instance, restrict users logged in from accessing the /var/www/ folder but have it still accessible using a web browser. Also, would this defeat the purpose since they could just wget from it if its still web accessible through a browser?
