Hardware :: Fan Speed Not Adjusting ?
Nov 26, 2010
I've had this problem across several versions of Ubuntu and other distributions as well, and nobody has ever been able to fix the issue. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite L355D-S7829 with Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. Ubuntu detects the make/model of the laptop on install because it tries to name the computer accordingly. My CPU fan speed is always stuck on next to zero. It's just "barely" running at all.
I did a:
Code:
And got
Code:
I'm unable to make any changes to this file even as root. Can anybody lend me a hand at all? The problem is that any time I do "anything" somewhat CPU intensive my video card and cpu begin to heat up rapidly and I can't really get them to cool off. I don't have this issue with Windows, and the CPU fan is clean and clear of dirt/dust.

Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

After installing Fedora 14, I can't seem to make my screen brightness go above the absolute minimum. I've tried editing /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to change the current setting from 20 to 100, but I can't save it, even when logged in as su, it returns "Invalid Argument" when I try to enter the filename of where to save. What do I do?

i got an AOC 18" lcd, the instructions that came with it, are only for Windows and Macs, if i press a button at the base of it, a square appears with all the pictures to configure including brightness, but i can't click on the screen. The cd that came with the monitor, i assume only works with Windows/Mac, i haven't inserted it for fear of screwing up.
PS: when i pass the mouse over the square, the pointer disappears.

The image on my external monitor is blurry. the resolution is right, but the Monitors menu shows the monitor to be a 20" while it is actually a 19". So this may be a hint. I would like to know how to adjust the monitor size (if possible). How can this be done? I am running 10.4 on a dell precision 4400, connecting with the monitor via VGA.

i ran into a problem while isntalling xine player on fedora 11, i first of all installed its core engine 'xine-lib' successfully with standard prefix! when i run the './configure' for its frontend (xine-ui) it gives this error.
No package 'libxine' found Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XINE_CFLAGS and XINE_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I can't track down..On most of my Slackware -current installs (I have 6 installs altogether) I can no longer get conky to adjust via .conkyrc Conky from SlackBuilds The problem is for some reason it's stuck at top of screen, with the whole upper-half not visible off screen.. I have tried adjusting .conkyrc, tried uninstalling/reinstalling tried adjusting how it starts in .fluxbox/startup all to no avail. I am starting it with either
conky -d
conky &
conky -d &
all the same result. Somehow I "fixed" one of the installs, and tried the same "fix" on the others and it didn't work..I am also trying to start either fbpanel or lxpanel either before or after conky...same results Is there another app (not gkrellm) that will do same as conky?

I added a directory to the $PATH variable in /etc/profile. This works for my user account but not for root. It's easy to add it to my /root/.bashrc but I would like to understand whats's wrong. It's a widely unmodified Debian 6 so I think my changes should do the trick.
Here is what my /etc/profile looks like:
# /etc/profile: system-wide .profile file for the Bourne shell (sh(1))
# and Bourne compatible shells (bash(1), ksh(1), ash(1), ...).
if [ "`id -u`" -eq 0 ]; then
[code]....
Edit: The path I added is the distcc-stuff. Here is what echo $PATH tells me:
$ echo $PATH
/usr/lib/distcc/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games
# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

I've been working on tightening up my firefox display. I've managed to cut down the vertical scrollbar. Anyone know how to do the same with the horizontal scroll bar. See screenshot? I'm running this on an eeepc 701 (hence the small screen size).
From my userchrome.css
/* hide vertical scrollbar */
notificationbox {
overflow-x: hidden;
} browser[type="content-primary"], browser[type="content-targetable"] {
overflow-y: scroll;
margin-right: -12px; /* 12px == width of my scrollbar */ }

I am running a dual boot conifg with OSX and Ubuntu PPC (karmic) on a 2004 G5 and everything is working pretty well - very well actually. The last thing I am trying to adjust is such a simple thing, but I just can't seem to get it. In Ubuntu, the screen position is shifted to the right, covering the scroll bar of windows and the trash can.
No problem, just use xvidtune, adjust the screen as I want and create a custom modeline right? Well, it does not seem to work.Here is what I did:Using xrandr I created a --newmode and then used --addmode to add it to the output I am using (default):
Code:
mieren@G5-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output default --newmode 1680x1050_new 146.25 1680 1820 1996 2268 1050 1053 1059 1089 -hsync +vsync
mieren@G5-Ubuntu:~$ xrandr -q
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1680 x 1050, maximum 1680 x 1050
[code]....
Notice how the new mode now lacks the rest of the config information specified in the --newmode above, not sure if this is normal.I can change to the new mode, and the resolution is correct, but the screen is still not adjusted. There is no difference switching between the 1680x1050 and the 1680x1050_new modes - the screen may flash, but the position does not change.
(I also tried adding a mode line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf screen section, but it also has no effect. Actually, there was no xorg.conf existing at all, so I created a minimal one.)It is really annoying to have to adjust the screen position using the monitor controls on every reboot.

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. you may set the environment variables BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.See the pkg-config man page for more details.

Is there a way to restrict users that are logged into the shell via SSH/Telnet/SFTP from using the 'cd' command to move into certain directories, yet not use the chmod command to do it? For instance, restrict users logged in from accessing the /var/www/ folder but have it still accessible using a web browser. Also, would this defeat the purpose since they could just wget from it if its still web accessible through a browser?

I just booted ubuntu from a disk that I burned to try and salvage some files off a hard drive with a failed boot sector (maybe. not sure what the problem is,). Anyway, I can see the files, and I have a large portable hard drive that I can use (a MyPassport 320gig, if I recall correctly). I'm having trouble accessing the drive, and I think it might be because there's something popping up in the task bar that I can't see. Unfortunately, I can't see the task bar! My screen's resolution is off, and I'm having trouble adjusting it. I browsed the various settings and I couldn't figure out any way to change it.
Is there anything I can do? EDIT: Oops! I didn't look into the Monitors options... how embarrassing.
EDIT2: Okay, looks like I can mess about with the resolutions, but all of them still deny me access to the full screen - still can't see the task bar.

When I try to adjust the mouse and keyboard parameters, changes aren't applied. I adjust them to were I want to, click on accept, but then when I look on the settings again, they are set to default again. This must be some kind of bug. I already updated using the LXDE repository.

I have updated my kernel to 2.6.27.48-0.2. Everything is fine, but when the system boots, it askes for a video mode, which I need to specify manually. The video mode is: 1280x768x32 Vega. This works well, but I want to edit the configfile in order to avoid manually setting the mode in each booting occasion.
My question is which file I need to edit. I have tried to add the note: vga=1280x768x32 Vega to the kernel option when booting. the system always asks for manual setting of the video mode.

[code]...
- how to adjust volume of audioplayback and microphone recording and record both as a mix together? Thanks!
PS: I checked out this thread, but haven't figured out how to adjust the volumes.

I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox,opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network
