Ubuntu Multimedia :: Adjusting Volume While Recording Audio Playback And Microphone
Nov 13, 2010how can I adjust the volume level while recording audio playback and microphone at the same time? I managed to increase the audio playback volume with PulseAudio Volume Control (Input devices -> Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo -> pressing green button "Set as fallback"), but once I click on that green button, no no microphone sound is recorded.
Details:
- using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- recording audio with Sound Recorder
- installed PulseAudio Device Choooser and PulseAudio Volume Control
- Input devices -> Internal Audio Analog Stereo --> shows the sound from microphone

I found out that this was just a problem of having a certain album ripped, so this does not happen any more.

Jul 16, 2010I am having some trouble with RhythmBoxt runs fine until I install the package (Synaptics) Rhythmbox plugins 0.12.8-0. After I install this package and then open RhythmBox, the applications opens for a few seconds and then closes (terminates). I get a segmentation fault.I tried reinstalling but this does not help. From previous posts, others were also obtaining segmentation faults, others had success with uninstalling the rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store package. I do not have this installed on my system. My problem is related with the plugins package.If I run rhythmbox from the command line in sudo mode it starts without crashing but with a warning:Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name But when I select one of the plugin sources it then terminates and closes down

Nov 1, 2010I was wondering if there is some ind of way of removing the rhythmbox link in the volume menu in the indicator applet..It's just that I hardly use it and it's pretty annoying and redundant as well having it there. I don't want to get rid of the volume menu completely nor of rhythmbox. I just want the link gone from there. Actually it never was there until I decided to open it once. After that day, it wouldn't go, no matter how I would exit the program. I didn't have this problem in 10.04. It's just in 10.10.

Mar 9, 2010I have some seemingly interrelated issues with music CDs that I can't find threads about. Music CDs don't mount, they just spin for a bit then sit there. While a music CD is in the tray, sound juicer (Audio CD extractor) dies with a Segmentation fault. Rhythmbox dies too with this fault:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Samsung U5 Sync Crashes Using Rhythmbox Or Banshee?
Jun 15, 2010I just got a Samsung U5, and although I could drag and drop, it's not as good as syncing. I've tried using both rhythmbox and banshee to sync my music from a playlist. It only happens when I set it to MTP, that both programs tend to crash. If I set it to MCS none of them will even detect the device, but will both work fine as music players. So far, rhythmbox just freezes and won't let me do anything with the device. Banshee only syncs half of the music files and comes up with this error.

Jan 14, 2010For awhile now, I've been trying to set two global hotkeys to control my volume level in Banshee. Before anyone comes in here and says to use the Volume Up/Volume Down keybinds in gnome-keybinding-properties, that does not work. That controls the master volume. I'm looking for a global hotkeys that control JUST the application volume.I've been playing around now, and I think I might have found a way. Since 9.10, Pulseaudio is integrated and the default sound manager. It also allows controlling the application volume level. While changing the volume would be through Pulseaudio and not in the specific application, this would work.
My question is if there's a way to set a keybind to control a specific application's volume within Pulseaudio? Or even a way to set a keybind to the event that happens when a specific application's volume is turned up or down within Pulseaudio.

Jun 2, 2010Banshee have crashed 3 times 'til now when I try to change the volume inside the program. It happened only 3 times, but now I'm afraid to change the volume and change it directly with the speaker's controls.One more question. When banshee crashes, all the system gets freezed. I tried with the console (CTRL+ALT+F1) but I don't know how to kill the banshee process.

Oct 29, 2010I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.

Mar 7, 2011I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.
First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.

Nov 5, 2010I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 10.10 after having been on windows again for a few years. It's not coming back as easily as I'd like.Anyways right after the install I noticed flash crashed when I tried to enter fullscreen. To fix this, I deselected hardware acceleration (per some other post on here, sorry can't remember to give credit).Now when I'm in full screen, it freezes the video if I try to change my volume level. Sound continues to play but the video doesn't move and I can't exit fullscreen or bring up the player bar at the bottom of the screen.I think this has more to do with the volume indicator coming up than the fact that the volume is changing i.e. anything that popped up like that would cause the problem.

If i put the scrollbar to the 0 position, it is muted. when i move it to anywhere else, i get the full volume. From other programs like vlc, i can adjust the volume with no problem.

Apr 10, 2011My volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.
It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.

There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

Ubuntu :: Volume Pop-up + Remove USB Headphones = Ubuntu Crashes?
Feb 19, 2011Removing usb headphones (I tried two brands) from my computer while the volume pop-up is up renders Ubuntu completely unresponsive, it crashes. It leaves behind a black screen with a single underscore at the top left and my mouse pointer (although once it froze with the everything intact, just frozen - did X crashing or something?).I believe it's not that I'm changing the volume, but the pop-up that is crashing things. If I wait for the pop-up to disappear, everything's fine and it doesn't crash when I remove my headphones.
So I removed notify-osd, restarted, and sure enough, that familiar volume pop-up went away. However, it was replaced by its ugly cousin (see attachment), which suffers the same crashing problem. So I was hoping someone would recognise this pop-up and know what package it came from so I can uninstall it (I was just messing with my sound, so it could come from some pulse-audio utility, jackd, fluidsynth - any of that junk).

May 26, 2010I own a Sony NWZ-E345 MP3 player that used to be seen by Rhythmbox when running 9.10 with no issues. After enabling the plugin for MTP within Rhythmbox the player was seen at connection. However, after updating to 10.04 my MP3 player is not seen at all, even though MTP support is enabled under plugins. As a matter of fact none of the media players I installed can see my player and they all support MTP. I tried some other players as a troubleshooting step. I have confirmed that libmtp8 is installed via the repository. Has anyone encountered this as well? I suspect this may be an easy reply for someone. BTW, this occurs with two different machines and nothing has changed with my MP3 player.

Jul 21, 2010If i close rhythmbox using the close tab on the window it closes to a daemon on the application bar.This is both fine and handy but i have a problem in that even when i left-click the daemon and hit 'quit', Rythmbox closes and then appears again a few seconds later. The same happens if i 'killall Rrhythmbox' in the terminal.I can also see, in conky, that Rhythmbox is running as a process when it re-opens and i can effectively 'show Rythmbox from the daemon - so its not just a daemon problem.Can someone either tell me how to permanently quit a running instance of Rhythmbox or tell me what setting i have enabled that keeps Rhtymbox opening?

Nov 21, 2010I upgraded to 10.4 (64bit) Ubuntu and since then have been unable to rip CD's using the procedure in the Official DocumentationUbuntu Documentation > Ubuntu 10.04 > Music, Video and Photos > Music > Extract from a CD.But when a CD is placed in the drive Rhythmbox would not run.Typing rhythmbox in a terminal (with a CD) in the drive shows the message segmentation fault.
I found in the documentation that sound-juicer was used in the ripping process and as this was not installed - so I installed this.I can now rip a CD using sound-juicer and can run rhythmbox when there is no cd in the computer but I am a little puzzled as to what is happening.
