Slackware :: Wierd Network With 64 13.0
May 9, 2010
I installed slackware64 13.0 on my Dell D630 laptop. Recently I found a wierd network problem:
Sometimes, after couple of hours, I nearly cannot open new websites. It takes so many time to open a page. (I tried in firefox, lynx and konqueror.
But some other connection still work, such as KRDC.
I tried nslookup and dig, they all works very well, so the DNS is ok.
But ping works very slow with some url if I use the domain name. And it runs very fast with the ip of that url. So, maybe there is some problem with the DNS, or something else.
ping result is:
1) ping by domain name
2) ping by ip (same target)
Restart the network with rc.inet1 cannot fix this problem. Only I can do is reboot the computer.
May be it's a kernel(2.6.29.6) bug? Or the bug of my wireless card driver(BCM 4311)?

I have installed my first Ubuntu server today. It is connected to our corporate network. On this network there is a Windows 2008 R2 server that serves as DNS Exchange and file server. For some unknown reason this Windows server looses network connection when the ubuntu server comes online. After some investigation the network connection is instantly restored when I stop the clamav-freshclam service on the ubuntu server. When I start the service the network connection of the Windows server goes down.The only "link" with the Windows service and the Ubuntu server is that the Windows server is configure as the nameserver on the ubuntu server.
I want to run this in production because the ubuntu will serve as anti-spam server. I need to understand what is happing and why to prevent this.

I'm experiencing a wierd bug. Been having it for some time now. I haven't posted about it before since its only been annoying, but not really setting me back. And I have trouble defining and explaining the bug. Today it crossed the line into actual annoyance.
The bug occurs when I'm writing, using the keyboard on my laptop. Both when I write in browsers, like when writing this post, and when I write in openoffice. So its not limited to one program. In webbrowsers what happens is that all of a sudden the browser loads the previous page in the tab. Like I told it to go one step back. In OpenOffice something similar happens. The curser jumps up in the document.
I used to have this bug when touchpad-tapping was enabled. I have a habit of drumming my thumbs on the touchpad when typing. Therefore I've disabled tapping on the touchpad. The bug is reocurring, however I have not found a way to reproduce it. It might be a key combination I accidentally hit when typing away, but I'm not sure.

From time to time I have to close Opera in order to regain the ability to use Totem or VLC (perhaps others). I'll explain. Normally everything is fine, but from time to time I will open Movie Player (Totem) and it will attempt to load whatever I have sent to it and it will vanish (crash). I can attempt to send anything to it and the same problem occurs (audio or video; mp3, flac, avi, &c). I can test the same problem with VLC and the same results occur (vanish/crash).
If I close Opera (and optionally restart it), I again can use Totem and VLC. I have tried merely killing Opera's plugin wrapper (thinking it was perhaps related to a plugin seizing PA), but this does nothing for the matter. (Of course killing Opera does as this is more or less the same as closing Opera.)

I have been using Ubuntu for about six months now. In my Emacs, I added CEDET but when I click the menu buttons, the options don't appear (they usually drop-down). The menu buttons for the default Emacs such as File, Edit, etc. work correctly. I had CEDET installed in my OpenSUSE and it works fine.

I've got a problem which drives me crazy. There is a website I am unable to connect (and a server). This problem appears only when I am workin at home, using my wifi network with my wifi router. Why am I becoming mad? I have four other systems: W2000, WXP, OpenBSD, Debian, they all use the same wifi router for a connection and there is no problem at all. It is not related to that particular computer cause eg. OpenBSD is installed on the same computer, it uses the same wifi card (so no some kind of a MAC filtration on the side of the router) and working on OpenBSD I can connect. For me it seems that accidentally I set some kind of a wall in the Slackware. But where and how? Where should I look for some filters or settings which may cause such strange behaveour?
Let me be clear: it is only about that particular site, I have an internet connection, I can google, I can do all thing, but I'm unable to connect to exactly this one site. Yeah, you know I always said that all companies should employee me as a super alfa tester. I'm able to broke everything. No system is secure when I'm working on it.

I am having trouble getting my wireless card to connect to my network. I believe I have done everything correctly. Here is my wpa_supplicant.conf file:
Code:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
ctrl_interface_group=0
eapol_version=1
ap_scan=1
[Code]....
I have never connected to a wpa network using slackware before, so I am not entirely sure how to use wpa_supplicant. I have altered the conf file, then tried dhcpcd and it times out.

Right now I cannot ping to my default gateway. The machine also has SuSE installed on a separate partition. Networking with the same parameters runs fine in that installation.
I use a troubleshooting checklist for situations like this:
- network troubleshooting checklist
- (case of wired connection with static ip)
- make sure net cable is well plugged in on both sides. CHKD.
- make sure ifconfig eth0 details the static IP you want set and that the iface is running (this stage is quite a head start if you've got to it. It would suggest that you have rc.inet1.conf set up properly. CHKD.
- HAL checked against eth0, and it also specifies eth0 for this interface.
- no problem pinging to 127.0.0.1
- type "route" and see if your default gateway comes up. SEMI-CHK: it does come up but takes a long while .. that's bad sign. It still means your rc.inet1.conf is OK, but here's something else up.
- check /etc/resolv.conf for your nameservers .. just in case some over-zealous program has decided to overwrite it. CHKD, all OK .. I use the google nameservers 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.8.8
Despite using what I thought were decent tools of the trade, if I unplug the cable they give the same output!

I created a similar thread last week in the networking section but only got one response. I was hoping to get a little more help here as this forum helped me tremendously to partition my hard drive safely. That was over a week ago, and ever since then I have been struggling with setting up my network. Here is what I have done.Basic set up with netconfig. I selected DHCP and followed the directions on the screen.ifconfig -a shows eth0 with no RX or TX packets at all, but at least it showed me information. If it was not detecting my card (which is compatible with linux), it would have said no device found. correct?
dhclient eth0 just hangs there for half a minute until I can add a command again.dhcpcd eth0 times out.I read (in slackbook chaper 5.2.1) that the correct kernel module may not be loaded. So I opened rc.modules with pico and went to the netdevice section. In slackbook it said to find my device and uncomment it.... but I cant find it! (I have an atheros ar9285 in my stock compaq CQ61 laptop) I also opened rc.netdevice and it was empty..It seems like the more I learn about the network, the more lost I get. I keep hearing that configuring a network on slackware is easy, am I just missing some simple step?Also, whenever I startx, akonadi gives me an error. I also get another error saying that it could not parse XMS file. Is that just due to my lack of an internet connection at the moment?

I have a slackware 12.2 server. We had some really rough storms this weekend that took the power out for many hours. The UPS that it was connect to gave up the ghost and the server went down hard. I powered up the unit and it some up fine but with no network. Ifconfig -a shows that it only knows about the lo interface. Both integrated gig ethernet ports are missing. I am not a slackware expert. Need to figure out what is needed to get it back on the network. dmesg | grep eth0 shows nothing. Nor eth1. ifconfig eth0 returns no such device.

I have a laptop that I want to connect to my stereo via USB, and I want the other computers on my network to be able to send sound to it somewhat transparently. By "transparently" I mean that I want to be able to send literally any audio that would go through my local speakers to the stereo via the network. As far as I know, PulseAudio can do this without rebuilding any multimedia packages. No one really has anything good to say about PulseAudio, though.
As of now I'm ready to wipe the laptop (Pentium 4) and put pretty much anything (*nix) on it. I know PulseAudio is pretty easy to get running on *buntu, so I might end up doing that. I just want to be able to turn on the laptop and connect the stereo (in any order) and without doing anything else, have it ready to go on the network. Of course, I'm willing to put in some work to get it running. I prefer Slackware and FreeBSD, but the machine will literally just be there to send sound to the stereo.
Someone on forums.freebsd.org suggested NAS as a solution to a similar problem; however, I can't find anything useful regarding how to configure it, troubleshoot it, etc. I've only found random threads on the web by people who know how to use it or by people who can't find any resources for it.
Anyway, I'll be busy setting up PulseAudio to see how that works out. I can always wipe the laptop later, and I have a Kubuntu boot on my main laptop that I don't really care about.

Just recently set up a Slackware 13.1 partition. I'm really enjoying how it works so far, but I have one problem I just can't seem to find the right solution to, and was hoping for some assistance. Here is the basic setup. The Slackware box has eth0 connected to my wired router, and eth1 goes to an xbox running Xbmc. What I require is that the Xbox gets it's own DHCP IP from the router. In other versions of Linux I accomplish this by using bridge-utils. In Arch Linux I accomplish this by having this in /etc/rc.conf:
Code:
eth0="eth0 up"
eth1="eth1 up"
br0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth0 eth1 br0)
and this in /etc/conf.d/bridges:
[Code]...
I know I'm close here, but I just can't get it to bring the network up with the bridge by restarting the networking, or rebooting.

I got a Slackware 12.1 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop which is a multi boot system along with Vista and Ubuntu Hardy. I tried using Slackware after several months. The last time I used Slackware, I was at university where the Network settings were Manual - Static IP, Gateway, DNS all specified according to location (dorm room). I moved out of univ and now have a network connection with DHCP. Basically I connect to a server, login with the info the service provider has given me.
Problem is I can't change the Network settings through Control Center in KDE. It just doesn't register any changes even if I reboot. Through Konsole and as root, I could change the settings using netconfig. But then I need a reboot to register the changes. Why is this so? Anyway to avoid a reboot? In my Ubuntu Hardy, there is no need for a reboot when I change the settings. Thats quite convenient.

I've got a Linksys WRT54G router with the latest firmware. I've got an HP laptop connecting wirelessly and my main box connecting wirelessly with a Linksys WMP54G card. (As an aside, I used to have another box too with the same wireless card). Both are set up with a static IP. Both can access the Internet just fine. The router is on the main floor. My main box is in the basement. Both boxes are running fully patched versions of Slackware64 13.1. sshd is running on both.
I like to ssh into the other box when there's a security update or to copy a file from one computer to the other, etc. The problem is that I can't do that all the time. Even if the laptop is connected to the network and accessing the Internet, on my main box ssh will still "say ssh: connect to host ***** port 22: No route to host". It is my understanding that if I ssh in, it is accessing the other computer directly and not going through the router. What would cause this? Even if I bring the laptop within four feet of my computer, it still can't connect.
There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to when it will connect and when it wont. Sometimes I can access it just fine then about five minutes later I can't.
