Ubuntu :: Emacs Wierd Bug In Ubuntu

Jun 15, 2011

I have been using Ubuntu for about six months now. In my Emacs, I added CEDET but when I click the menu buttons, the options don't appear (they usually drop-down). The menu buttons for the default Emacs such as File, Edit, etc. work correctly. I had CEDET installed in my OpenSUSE and it works fine.

Ubuntu :: Wierd Opera And PulseAudio Conflict?

Feb 15, 2010

From time to time I have to close Opera in order to regain the ability to use Totem or VLC (perhaps others). I'll explain. Normally everything is fine, but from time to time I will open Movie Player (Totem) and it will attempt to load whatever I have sent to it and it will vanish (crash). I can attempt to send anything to it and the same problem occurs (audio or video; mp3, flac, avi, &c). I can test the same problem with VLC and the same results occur (vanish/crash).

If I close Opera (and optionally restart it), I again can use Totem and VLC. I have tried merely killing Opera's plugin wrapper (thinking it was perhaps related to a plugin seizing PA), but this does nothing for the matter. (Of course killing Opera does as this is more or less the same as closing Opera.)

Ubuntu Servers :: ClamAV-freshclam Does Wierd On Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have installed my first Ubuntu server today. It is connected to our corporate network. On this network there is a Windows 2008 R2 server that serves as DNS Exchange and file server. For some unknown reason this Windows server looses network connection when the ubuntu server comes online. After some investigation the network connection is instantly restored when I stop the clamav-freshclam service on the ubuntu server. When I start the service the network connection of the Windows server goes down. The only "link" with the Windows service and the Ubuntu server is that the Windows server is configure as the nameserver on the ubuntu server.

I want to run this in production because the ubuntu will serve as anti-spam server. I need to understand what is happing and why to prevent this.

OpenSUSE :: Wierd Bug In 11.2 64 Bit, KDE4?

Apr 28, 2010

I'm experiencing a wierd bug. Been having it for some time now. I haven't posted about it before since its only been annoying, but not really setting me back. And I have trouble defining and explaining the bug. Today it crossed the line into actual annoyance.

The bug occurs when I'm writing, using the keyboard on my laptop. Both when I write in browsers, like when writing this post, and when I write in openoffice. So its not limited to one program. In webbrowsers what happens is that all of a sudden the browser loads the previous page in the tab. Like I told it to go one step back. In OpenOffice something similar happens. The curser jumps up in the document.

I used to have this bug when touchpad-tapping was enabled. I have a habit of drumming my thumbs on the touchpad when typing. Therefore I've disabled tapping on the touchpad. The bug is reocurring, however I have not found a way to reproduce it. It might be a key combination I accidentally hit when typing away, but I'm not sure.

Slackware :: Wierd Network With 64 13.0

May 9, 2010

I installed slackware64 13.0 on my Dell D630 laptop. Recently I found a wierd network problem:

Sometimes, after couple of hours, I nearly cannot open new websites. It takes so many time to open a page. (I tried in firefox, lynx and konqueror.

But some other connection still work, such as KRDC.

I tried nslookup and dig, they all works very well, so the DNS is ok.

But ping works very slow with some url if I use the domain name. And it runs very fast with the ip of that url. So, maybe there is some problem with the DNS, or something else.

ping result is:

1) ping by domain name

2) ping by ip (same target)

Restart the network with rc.inet1 cannot fix this problem. Only I can do is reboot the computer.

May be it's a kernel(2.6.29.6) bug? Or the bug of my wireless card driver(BCM 4311)?

After I installed GNU Emacs 23 to my Ubuntu system, every time I invoke the "emacs file" command, it launches Emacs.Because opening up Emacs takes time on my PC's last century hardware, and it consumes quite a big chunk of memory too. I wonder if I can still do some quick text editing using Terminal's emacs mode?

Ubuntu :: Logs Out Each Time When Use Emacs (X11)

May 3, 2011

I recently clean installed Ubuntu 10.10 and copied over my last home directory from 11.04, after having upgraded from 10.10. Maybe something went wrong in this transition which is making this happen. Basically, I have a macbook pro with Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit and have the latest nvidia driver. I'm sshing using -X and -A. I try "emacs &" and Ubuntu logs me out immediately. Occasionally, it will simply log me out on startup although I haven't seen this happen in the last few logins. I also just tried running kdiff3. It starts to load the window and it does the same as emacs: it logs me out of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Emacs -- Run Shell Command W/o Output?

Jul 12, 2011

I write LaTeX in Emacs and then run a shell script to process the LaTeX code. I used to run a subshell buffer with M-x shell and then execute the script from within there, but this results in a lot of switching between buffers, which seems unnecessary. Then, I found out about executing shell commands with M-! cmd RET, as described here:[URL]The problem with this is that the output from the script splits my screen. It's a nuisance, and I would like to run the script without any output. I've tried appending > /dev/null to the command, but it doesn't work. For example, when from within Emacs I enter M-! followed by

Code:
sh make.sh > /dev/null
it splits my screen so that one portion displays output from the make.sh script. I want it to run silently, and leave my Emacs buffers alone

Ubuntu Installation :: Get Latest Version Of Emacs?

Sep 1, 2011

I have Ubuntu 10.10. The software package that is available in the Software Center and Synaptic is 23.1 (which I installed), but I'd like to install the latest release (23.3). What's the best way to go? I know that you're supposed to try to find a deb package if possible, but there's only tar.gz files on the official GNU site. I found this site: http:[url]....

which seems to have the deb package for 23.3, but I don't know anything about this site and if I can trust it.I found version 23.2 here:

http://packages.debian.org/stable/editors/ though I'd still prefer the latest version. But again, I don't know this site either. What's the best for me to get 23.3 where it will just work and I don't start getting dependency errors?

Ubuntu :: Customize AUCTeX View Command In Emacs?

May 20, 2010

I've been using Emacs with the AUCTeX package to edit and compile my .tex documents lately, but there's something that's been bugging me. First, here is the short question:How can I costumize the default view command emacs runs when I type C^c C^c <enter>?I've read that it's done with the tex-view-dvi-command variable, but I've had no luck getting it to work at all.Now the explanation:It bugs me that whenever I type C^c C^c to compile, and then C^c C^c to view dvi, emacs doesn't automatically give focus to the dvi viewer (xdvi). Digging a little, I found out that the command "wmctrl -a main" gives focus to xdvi ("main" is the title of the xdvi window). So, if I can only customize AUCTeX's standard view command to include "&& wmctrl -a main" at the end, than my problem would be solved
