Slackware :: Cannot Connect To Network Gateway
Mar 9, 2010
Right now I cannot ping to my default gateway. The machine also has SuSE installed on a separate partition. Networking with the same parameters runs fine in that installation.
I use a troubleshooting checklist for situations like this:
- network troubleshooting checklist
- (case of wired connection with static ip)
- make sure net cable is well plugged in on both sides. CHKD.
- make sure ifconfig eth0 details the static IP you want set and that the iface is running (this stage is quite a head start if you've got to it. It would suggest that you have rc.inet1.conf set up properly. CHKD.
- HAL checked against eth0, and it also specifies eth0 for this interface.
- no problem pinging to 127.0.0.1
- type "route" and see if your default gateway comes up. SEMI-CHK: it does come up but takes a long while .. that's bad sign. It still means your rc.inet1.conf is OK, but here's something else up.
- check /etc/resolv.conf for your nameservers .. just in case some over-zealous program has decided to overwrite it. CHKD, all OK .. I use the google nameservers 8.8.8.8 and 4.4.8.8
Despite using what I thought were decent tools of the trade, if I unplug the cable they give the same output!

I recently swapped from ubuntu to slackware. It's all functioning, minus the wireless network. Decided to forgo my usual fluxbox desktop for the features in KDE until I get ready to swap back (not sure what programs I'll have to add to startup in flux yet). I'm using a toshiba satellite L305-S5957 with a Realtek 802.11b/g wireless-LAN adapter. Not sure if it's a hardware problem or if I just don't know how to connect with kde.

I installed the new Slackware 13.1 64 on my laptop and I am trying to connect to the internet via a wireless network but i don't what is wrong with my configurations it just doesn't work.
I tried doing the following:
iwconfig wlan0 essid "ESSID"
iwconfig wlan0 key "Password"
iwconfig wlan0 channel NUMBER
Then i do dhcpcd -d but then no success after - i try to ping some sites, no reply, i put new dns servers in resolv.conf, still no results, i tried to ping some ips and it says network unreachable, it just doesn't work at all.
I did iwlist wlan0 scanning and it found all the wireless networks, so the adapter is not the problem, the problem here is the procedure. How to do it properly so it will work ? I can connect via ethernet by easy configuring eth0 but i have no success for wireless networks. I read everything there was on google, i searched a lot of sites, i tried a lot of different methods but NONE of it worked.

Hi I have istalled a D-Link wireless adaptor - with the help of this forum.
It is up and running - the light flashes and lsusb identifies it correctly, so does iwconfig.
I can, however, not connect to the network, and I noticed the following errors on boot up.
Trigering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger -- type: failed /etc/rc.d/rc.M: wlan0 Error for wireless request; "Set Nickname" (8BIC) information; "Any ESSID" Set failed on device wlan0; operation not supported.
Lower down I get
Starting rt2870 drivers . . . /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: wlan0 information "Any ESSID"
Error for wireless request "Set Nickname" (8BIC) set failed on device wlan0 : Operation not supported
I have on two occassions seen sugstions to use wicd, but how do I use that?

I have openSUSE 11.2 installed and i need to create a gateway server that allows virtual private network connections. I want to play with my friends some lan games, but we are in different networks, so i want to create this gateway server so we can connect with VPN clients to this server and play freely.

I installed openSUSE on one of my work system. The network port wasn't working when I was installing, but works fine now (checked in Windows). But for some reason, I am not able to configure the network. I used both Dynamic and Static IPs (both work fine in Windows) but still no go. I am using Yast Control Center for this purpose. I can't even ping the default gateway when I am using custom settings. When I use dynamic settings, it says Unreachable Network.

Why trying to avoid ranting about my Linksys router, I'll try and keep things short. I have a Linksys router in which the default firmware was terrible and would not correctly renew its DHCP lease. After getting feed up with that I flashed dd-wrt on the router and now it works better but randomly DNS queries would stop being resolved. To rule out the chances that it is my ISPs DNS servers I switched my DNS to openDNS, same problem happens (although I have to admit openDNS is a lot better than what my ISP has).
Anyways I'm about feed up with it and about an inch away from drop kicking the thing out my window. To avoid that I figured I will give it one more change and instead of using my Linksys as my network gateway I'll move all of that to my home server, and make the Linksys just an wireless AP. Besides setting up DHCP, DNS, and iptables on the server is there anything else I will need to know and setup on the server to make this work?
Side note anyone using openSUSE for DHCP know if setting up reserved IPs for certain MAC address is possible?

I have one pc on which I have installed slackware and samba (fixed IP, mask 255.255.255.0) I have another PC (also XP) which also has fixed IP running XP, and I can connect that to the slackware server easily My third PC connects to the internet and gets its IP address from the Cisco router(?) that provides the IP and mask on boot up.
I tried changing the IP and Mask on the slackware server to match the internet PC (which uses a mask 255.255.254.0) but the PC mask and IP changed on the internet PC I want the PC that connects to the internet to also be able to connect to the slackware server, but I see no need for the slackware server to also connect to the internet - I will mainly use it as a file server When I worked for another company I think the IT department talked about having 2 network cards in the PC that connects to the internet

Our firewall (debian) currently has 4 public ip addresses (eth0 1.2.3.4, eth0:0 1.2.3.5, eth0:1 1.2.3.8, eth0:2 1.2.3.9) and 3 internal subnets (eth1 10.1.x.x, eth1:0 10.2.x.x, eth2 10.7.x.x). We are experiencing the following two problems which I believe have the same root cause. 1) The firewall cannot access beyond the isp gateway (1.2.3.1). 2) From externally, we can ping eth0 with no trouble, however, pinging the eth0:0, eth0:1 and eth0:2 interfaces have results similar to the following:
Code:
PING 1.2.3.8 (1.2.3.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 1.2.3.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=59.0 ms
64 bytes from 1.2.3.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=57 time=63.0 ms (DUP!)
64 bytes from 1.2.3.8: icmp_seq=13 ttl=57 time=59.3 ms
64 bytes from 1.2.3.8: icmp_seq=13 ttl=57 time=63.0 ms (DUP!)
64 bytes from 1.2.3.8: icmp_seq=24 ttl=57 time=62.0 ms
64 bytes from 1.2.3.8: icmp_seq=24 ttl=57 time=65.6 ms (DUP!)
I get the feeling that I'm missing something obvious, especially since all traffic on the internal subnets can access externally as normal.

I've just installed fedora 10 on my Dell Inspiron 1525, and I can't connect to my wireless net. I know how to manually enter the SSID (and have no clue what a BSSID is), MAC address, and I know it's infastructure (well, it's not ad-hoc, so it must be).
The problem is, my router uses a 64-bit encryption protocol, and there's no '64-bit' key option under Wireless Security's dropdown. Is there any way around this, aside from either changing the encryption protocol, or plugging it in manually (neither of which are options)?

STEP 1) Install Slackware 13.1 (everything works out of the box*) Gotcha: 3d isn't enabled in X Fix: Yes it is... run glxgears from a console or run glxinfo | grep render.
Gotcha: No CD drive to install from Fix 1: Get a usb CDROM drive Fix 2: Boot off of a thumbdrive using the usbboot.img (found on disc 6) Gotcha: Card Reader (ENE Technology) doesn't work Fix: You have to use the MMC driver-modprobe mmc_core modprobe sdhci modprobe mmc_blockIt should now show up in dmesg and /dev/mmcblk0p1 should be created if it is an SD card. NOTE: SD Card portion works using SDHCI driver. NO DRIVERS for XD and MS cards yet. *Card reader is gimped due to ENE Technology being evil.

I have a network gateway system which runs redhat 7 (2.2.16)
Firewall running is ipchains
Internal network is eth0 192.168.5.1
External network is eth1 99.99.99.98 (example add)
My problem when I change the static address of the external network from 99.99.99.99 to 99.99.99.98 I am not able to connect to internet. From my preliminary investigation ip is not binded to network card., but I am not sure, is there a way to check binding accurately
Below is the ifcfg-eth1 file contents
DEVICE="eth1"
USERCTL=no
ONBOOT="yes"
BOOTPROTO="none"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
IPADDR="99.99.99.99"
IPXNETNUM_802_2=""
IPXPRIMARY_802_2="no"
IPXACTIVE_802_2="no"
IPXNETNUM_802_3=""
IPXPRIMARY_802_3="no"
IPXACTIVE_802_3="no"
IPXNETNUM_ETHERII=""
IPXPRIMARY_ETHERII="no"
IPXACTIVE_ETHERII="no"
IPXNETNUM_SNAP=""
IPXPRIMARY_SNAP="no"

I have updated the address change in ipchains firewall scripts. Before IP change network was work fine with this firewall scripts.

My workstation is on a network, let's say 10.100.0.0/24. I'm opening up an openVPN Tunnel to a test environment in my company, receiving a lot of routes to this network (address range 172.xx.yy.0). Everything is working fine so far. In this test environment I placed a number of virtual systems having their own private network (10.99.0.0/24). I have one machine in this virtual cluster which is able to forward incoming IP traffic to the others.
When I login to this gateway system, using the 172.xx.yy.zz address, I can logon to the others using the 10.99.aa.bb addresses. Fine so far. But I have to be able to call these machines with the 10.99.0.0/24 addresses from my laptop. So I tried to add a route like:
route add -net 10.99.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 172.xx.yy.zz
Unfortunately I received an error messages:
SIOCADDRT: No such process
According to the entries in other forum articles (Google helps in most cases), I have to add a host route first:
route add -host 172.xx.yy.zz gw 172.well.defined.dest

When a second network adapter is fitted, the boot script fails to configure the default gateway. Here's from /var/log/messages with DEBUG_ETH_UP="yes" configured for the boot script Code: Feb 13 10:22:23 ps1 logger: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: /sbin/route add default gw 191.168.1.1 metric 1 Feb 13 10:22:23 ps1 logger: SIOCADDRT: No such process
After boot the same command failed with the same message when done by root logged in via ssh but succeeded when run from the console After removing the second network adapter, the boot script is able to configure the gateway.
EDIT: or not. The problem now seems intermittent Now with only the onboard network adapter the same "SIOCADDRT: No such process" error is logged during boot and the "/sbin/route add default gw 191.168.1.1" command fails at the console too. Am experimenting with disabling the onboard adapter and fitting the NIC.
EDIT 2: definitely intermittent. Just rebooted with no hardware changes; same error during boot and route -n showed no default gateway but "/sbin/route add default gw 191.168.1.1" worked.

I have users using Windows XP, Windows 7, Linux (Fedora) and Mac. They all are in a single private network and all access internet through a Linux (RHEL5) system in which Squid acts as gateway. The same is true with my branch offices too except that private network is different and gateway system uses Fedora 9 instead of RHEL5. All the branch offices are connected through point to point leased lines with the head office for file transfer.
My requirement is this: I have a web server located at head office. Presently I am able to access this server from my branch offices through internet. I would like to access this server from branch offices through leased lines. This too I am able to access if I do routing in users system. The file transfer is taking place through one to one system at two ends by creating static routing in those systems.

I am looking for some advice on how best to lock down our office network to keep our employee's from wasting time on sites like facebook and ...... This will be my first time setting up a server as a gateway in a production environment so I thought I should get some suggestions on what the best packages would be to do this.
I essentially need to lock down our network so that i can monitor what everyone is doing on the Internet and block it if needed. it doesn't have to be web based or have a bunch of gui's, im fine with command line, configs and log files, but it would be nice.
I'm interested in commercial products as well as long as they are linux based.
