I'm using Slackware 13.1_64 with multi-lib. Now that 13.37 is out I would like to upgrade my system but thought I would ask if there are any problems or considerations for upgrading multi-lib systems ?

Slackware :: Pkgbuild - Modern, Multi-architecture, Package Builder For Slackware?

May 25, 2010

We are pleased to present one of our new creations: pkgbuild, a tool written in standard C++, using libCURL, ZLib, BZip2 and libLZMA (part of XZ). It is a modern Slackware packages builder, network-transparent, multi-architecture, designed to greatly simplify the creation of a package, automatically executing the required post processing.

What does it do? Recognize and build packages for the following architectures: i386, i486, i586, i686, x86_64, IA64, IA32e, s390, s390x, sparc and sparc64.

Slackware :: 64-current - After The Big One - Multi-lib ?

Mar 6, 2010

Well this pretty much sums up the experience with Slackware current these days. This is not to say it was all plain sailing. So what problems were there?

1) Nvidia drivers did not work, this was fixed by re-compiling the kernel modules and installing a patched or beta driver, but it introduced another fault. However this problem cannot be accredited to Slackware, all operating systems have driver problems after being updated. Nvidia however had a new version out in a couple of days, which completely fixed the problem.

2) The problem introduced by the hacked fix of the older Nvidia driver wouldn't allow me to switch to the generic kernel (it would not create a valid initrd.gz). I think this was because of re-compiling the kernel modules, so I re-installed them and the problem was fixed. Again not a Slackware fault but a samac fault.

3) Program A couldn't find library B. Slackware has moved some libraries from e2fsprogs to util-linux-ng. This may cause some stuff to break if you are using the multi-lib extensions. This was fixed by creating a compat32 package for util-linux-ng. Again not actually Slackwares fault, but a little closer to home. Alien Bob could you update the massconvert.sh please.

That's it so far, after an update that ran to over 500 lines in the change log, an updated kernel, updated glibc, updates X server etc. etc. and three paltry problems none of which could be attributed to Slackware directly.

Slackware :: 64 Multi-lib And Nvidia Graphics?

Aug 13, 2010

I'm just about to install Alien Bob's multi-lib packages for Slackware64. Everything looks easy, but I've got a question about this part of the instructions:

Quote:

After installing the -compat32 packages, you may have to re-install your binary Nvidia or Ati video X.Org drivers. These driver packages contain both 64bit and 32bit libraries to be maximally useful on a 64bit multilib OS. If you installed the driver files for both architectures, the mesa-compat32 package will overwrite some of the 32bit library files.

On the other hand, if you originally only installed the 64bit driver libraries for your Nvidia/Ati card, it is recommended after installation of the multilib packages, to re-install the binary driver package. This time, choose to install the 32bit driver files as well.

The graphical 32bit applications that you are going to run on your multilib installation will require these 32bit driver libraries. Crashes are likely to occur if you fail to install the correct files.

Right now, I'm on pure 64-bit Slackware64-13.1, and I'm using the Nvidia driver from Slackbuilds.org (along with the nvidia-kernel and libvdpau packages from there too).

So:Do I have both 32- and 64- bit bindary drivers installed as part of the package from Slackbuilds.org?
Could I avoid all this hassle by simply not installing the mesa-compat32 package?
If I do need to reinstall the Nvidia binary driver, do I just upgradepkg --reinstall nvidia-driver-195.36.15-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz?

Slackware :: Upgrading To -current And Multi-lib From 13.1?

Nov 16, 2010

I'm looking at running -current instead of 13.1, and wondering about 'upgrading' to -current, as well as running multi-lib. I found the following procedures from another post of about a year ago, but I'm not sure from what directory to run such a script:

Code:

# Upgrade to Slackware64-current
upgradepkg --install-new slackware64-current/slackware64/*.t?z
# Download compat32 stuff

[code]....

Should the procedures above work for me? and although I know that things may occasionally break here and there (and get fixed too), are there any known issues right now that would break things on my machine?

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.4.2 Upgrade In Multi Monitor System ?

Apr 1, 2010

Im running 11.2-64 with the stock KDE (3.5) included with the distro. Recently I messed about attempting an update of Amarok and phonon to get the graphic EQ back for music playback. The "messing about" was not with the one click install offered on the KDE website for 4.4.2.....and interestingly the messing about was the day before they "released" 4.4.2-- with the result that I ended up. trashing" the system and having to reload (didnt loose /home tho another reason why I love SUSe....)anyway I ve been looking around and have seen problems mentioned on the KDE forum with multi monitors in their 4.x desktop environment....it is tempting to "just push the button" on the 4.4.2 install and see what happens but Im not sure I want to spend another few hours here repairing things where I have my workspace back.

This machine is used in my home office, a core quad with 2 GB of RAM, Intel motherboard and a pair of NVidia GT 8500 PCIe cards running 3 monitors..... am curious if anyone is using 4.4.2 in a multi monitor environment, how the upgrade went and any problems with X server with the new environment?

Slackware :: Multi-lib From AlienBOB 13.1 Can't Compile VMware Server 2.0.2 B-203138

Jul 8, 2010

Slackware64 multi-lib from AlienBOB 13.1 can't compile VMware Server 2.0.2 build-203138

1. It does run wine 32 bit version ( a package called "64" bit, but there ain't no 64bit wine, right?)

2. It runs 32 bit programs in that wine.

3. It is vanilla 2.6.33.4 kernel 64bit so far.

Shall I go for VirtualBox or can I get VMWare to work any soon? I already did the VMware-server-2.0.2-203138-update-2.patch and got a bit further, but the build of the vmmon just "goes to pieces"?

Code:

make: Entering directory `/tmp/vmware-config3/vmmon-only'

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.33.4'

Slackware :: Running Multi For 32 Bit Support - Error Loading CURL Library

Jun 27, 2010

I'm running Slack 13.1 64 bit. I'd like to try running multi for 32 bit support so I can run a 32 bit version of firefox using the 32 bit flash plugin. Here's what I did: - followed Alien Bob's Wiki and download and installed all the *txz files. - installed a bunch of required libraries following the instructions on the Wiki - installed the 32 bit 10.1 version of the flash player plugin in $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/ - started the 32 bit 3.6.3 version of firefox; it seems to work fine. - go to about plugins and verify that Shockwave Flash (libflashplayer.so) is version 10.1 r53 and it is enabled. - run "ldd libflashplayer.so" and verified that all libraries are found. - run "ldd /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/firefox-bin" and verified all libraries are found. - go to [URL]... and click on "test your adobe flash player installation" I will get this error: Adobe Flash Player error: could not load cURL library - I verified (repeatedly) that I do have what I think is the correct package. How can I fix (or start debugging) this error?

Hardware :: ATI Multi Card Multi Display Xinerama Composite

Jun 24, 2011

I have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop.The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).

Debian :: Using VNC In A Multi-user / Multi-system Network

Mar 21, 2011

Anyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.

I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.

CentOS 5 :: Xen VM - Multi Core CPU VS Multi CPUs?

Im running 64bit centos 5.6 and using virt-manager.On one of my guest OS's, Windows 7, The max Physical CPUs is 2, you can have unlimited CPU Cores however. (like my machine i use for work has 1, 4 core processor).The issue im having is xen only allows you to set the vcpu arguemnet in your xen config file. How can i set it so that 1 CPU has several Cores just as windows would recognize this machine if i were installing directly to the hardware vs via a VM.Ive searched for 2 days staright trying to address this issue, very little progress, Does anyone know where a XEN support forum is? all i get is the citrix xen support forums.

here is the best info i have found on this, but i dont know how to change this for my CPU to work, when i enter this in my xen config it essentially ignores it and just takes the value of vcpu= so windows shows 2 CPUs each with ONLY one core. Id like 1 or 2 CPUS showing Several cores.The physical Hardware is 2x Xeon 5300 Quad Core CPUs.

Slackware :: Image / Icon Trouble After Slackware-current Upgrade

I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?

Slackware :: Upgrade To 13.1 From 12.2?

Jan 14, 2011

I tried to upgrade from 12.2 to 13.1 using slackpkg but, by some reason, it did not upgrade and bash gave me error at any command I tried to use. I tried to use the boot CD but still, I couldn't use chroot. Desperately, I mounted the hdd partition into a directory and I installed all the packages from slackware/a directory (with --root /mnt/disk option). Surprisingly, I rebooted and the system successfully loaded the new kernel. Since I installed only the "slackware/a" packages, I would to know which would be the next step to fully upgrade the system. I intend to upgradepkg all the directories from dvd "slackware". Is this a good solution? If yes, which should be the next packages that should be upgraded: "slackware/l", "slackware/ap", "slackware/d" ?? I'm interested in the order of the directories that should be installed.

Slackware :: KDE Won't Start After Upgrade 13.1 To 13.37?

May 18, 2011

I have upgraded from 13.1 to 13.37 on three PCs. No problems on 2 of these (home server and laptop), but on the third machine (main Desktop, where most KDE customisation had been done of course), KDE refuses to start for the main user (me). It will start OK for root and xfce will start OK for me, so X is OK with the updated NVIDIA driver that I have also installed. The KDE splash screen starts up and four of the five splash icons come into focus, but the fifth one never does. Some disk rattling goes on for a while but then ceases.

I have tried renaming the .kde folder and .kderc but this has not helped. Are there other KDE config files that I could try renaming / removing? Or are there log files / error messages somewhere that I should consult.

Obviously I am not in a position to change any KDE system settings from the KDE application.

Just tried KDE with a newly-created user and it's the same as with my user - no desktop. So KDE is only starting for root.

The second one, with DIALUPS_CHECK_ENB and NOLOGIN_STR was solved too. Now, when booting, the system says it can't find /sbin/mount, swapon, hwlock and fsck, and also /proc/filesystems and /proc/ioports. It asks for the root password for maintenance and boots again afterwards. Do you have any idea what should I look for, because the mentioned /sbin/_files _ are at /sbin ?
