Slackware :: KDE Won't Start After Upgrade 13.1 To 13.37?

May 18, 2011

I have upgraded from 13.1 to 13.37 on three PCs. No problems on 2 of these (home server and laptop), but on the third machine (main Desktop, where most KDE customisation had been done of course), KDE refuses to start for the main user (me). It will start OK for root and xfce will start OK for me, so X is OK with the updated NVIDIA driver that I have also installed. The KDE splash screen starts up and four of the five splash icons come into focus, but the fifth one never does. Some disk rattling goes on for a while but then ceases.

I have tried renaming the .kde folder and .kderc but this has not helped. Are there other KDE config files that I could try renaming / removing? Or are there log files / error messages somewhere that I should consult.

Obviously I am not in a position to change any KDE system settings from the KDE application.

Just tried KDE with a newly-created user and it's the same as with my user - no desktop. So KDE is only starting for root.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support. Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. So then after some googling I got the suggestion to downgrade udev-151 to udev-141, but that yeilded no results. So I did some more googling and a bunch of people who had the same problem said that downgrading module-init-tools worked, so I downgraded from module-init-tools 3.11 something to 3.6 and now, not only does my X no longer work, but no modules are being loaded I believe, for example I saw in my startup that fuse was not being loaded, ndiswrapper which I had installed was not loaded.

Slackware :: Image / Icon Trouble After Slackware-current Upgrade

Jan 22, 2010

I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?

Ubuntu :: X Won't Start After 10.10 Upgrade?

Oct 1, 2010

Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10, gnome didn't load on reboot, tried typing startx and got this error:

Code:
(EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error: no screens found I had the nvidia proprietary driver installed before upgrade. Using a nvidia g-force 7300 graphic card. Anything I can do on my end to fix this? Any easy way to go back to 10.04? Or should I just reinstall 10.04 from the CD-ROM and forget about 10.10 before it's stable?

Fedora Installation :: Won't Start Up After F10 Upgrade?

Nov 11, 2009

Some quick background info: I am not a Linux expert, but I'm not sure I can still qualify as a "newbie", since my first Linux install was RH9 in 2003. I later upgraded to FC3 and continued to use it until my hard drive crashed around a year ago. I suffered on an old WinXP machine until I was able to buy a new system from someone on Craig's list. Although the guy didn't realize it (hence neither did I), it has a 64-bit processor, so when I installed Fedora 10, I installed the x86_64 version.I chose F10 since I use the Planet CCRMA pro audio packages, and they lag slightly behind the latest and greatest distro versions. I'm also not a bleeding-edge kinda guy, since - as I said above - I am not an expert.

So, then, here's what's happened: I installed F10 by downloading the 64-bit DVD image from the Fedora Unity respin site. As I had hoped, after the installation when I asked yum if I was due for an upgrade it said I was up to date. That was fine for a few weeks, but then this past Sunday I got a pop-up message saying that I was due for a system upgrade. I was hesitant, as I usually am before making any drastic changes, but I figured this is Fedora, they want to do the upgrade, this has got to be pretty safe. Not so much.I fired off the upgrade before heading to bed and let it run overnight (it actually took only an hour or two, but I started it late). In the morning I found my system with a blank screen and essentially unresponsive. I can move a block cursor around the screen, and if I type anything it is echoed on the screen, but there is no response; I don't believe I am in a shell of any kind.

Hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL reboots the system, and it gets past the grub menu and the Fedora start-up progress bar (the dark blue/light blue/white text blocks with "Fedora 10" at the right). After the progress bar finishes, though, the screen goes blank (maybe X is starting up?) but never gets anywhere. That's when I can type stuff on the screen, but nothing provokes any kind of response (except for CTRL-ALT-DEL).I'm mildly curious to know if the recommendation about upgrades vs. fresh installs, as given in the sticky post on this forum, still applies, or if it is now considered safer to let the system upgrade itself when it feels ready.

What I really need to know, however, is where I should start in order to get my system back. Should I go to the command line from the grub menu? Boot from my install disc in rescue mode? I'm not even sure what I should look for once I've done either of these, so I'm kind of floundering ...This PC has a dual-core Pentium 4 running at 2.9 GHz, and apparently it's a 64-bit processor. The video card is by NVidia, but I don't know the exact card off-hand. There's a built-in Intel sound card of some kind and I added an M Audio Delta 1010LT multi-channel card.

Ubuntu :: GDM Doesn't Start After Upgrade?

May 21, 2010

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. While it seemed to go fine, GDM won't start. (Instead the Plymouth bootloader just displays the splash screen continuously.) I can get in through a virtual terminal, but starting GDM via the init script does not do anything. I also tried this:

Code:
me@host:~$ sudo gdm
**
ERROR:gdm-settings-direct.c:157:gdm_settings_direct_get_boolean: assertion failed: (entry != NULL)
Aborted

I tried running sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm, but this did not change anything. Logged in from the virtual terminal I can run startx and get the desktop, but obviously I would like to have the login manager working.

Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Won't Start After Upgrade?

Jul 7, 2010

Tonight I did the usual apt-get update/upgrade and it installed a newer version of Thunderbird.

Synaptic says the version I have is 3.0.5+build2+nobin.

Their is a bug [URL] that refers to an upstream directory which I don't have. Apparently some recent upgrades have produced some kind of circular link. I am not sure whether that is the problem I have but this is supposed to give the answer. Not sure whether it does but here is some terminal output:

kgw@kgw-desktop:~$ ls -ld ~/.*thunderbird*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 kgw kgw 22 2010-04-22 20:48 /home/kgw/.mozilla-thunderbird -> /home/kgw/.thunderbird
drwx------ 3 kgw kgw 4096 2009-12-08 14:34 /home/kgw/.thunderbird

When I click on the Thunderbird icon, there is an item that appears in the bar at the bottom of my screen that says Thunderbird and it produces a tiny vertical bar at the top of my screen that can be dragged into a an application window that is blank.

Oddly, when I asked firefox to send a link (forgetting that thunderbird wasn't working) it popped up the usual box to send an email and let me send it. The main screen of thunderbird still won't start.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.04 - Won't Start Up

Oct 13, 2010

Since I noticed a new version of Ubuntu (10) was out and I was still running an old version (8.04) I thought about upgrading. With the update manager is selected update to 10.04 and everything went on it's way.

During the process I got asked if I wanted to update the GRUB loader. Since I also use Windows and with a previous update of GRUB I couldn't start into it anymore I selected, "keep this version" (which I think is now causing this trouble).

The upgrade completed and restarted, however, Ubuntu now doesn't start anymore.
I get prompted with:

mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device udevd(896): error getting socket: Invalid argument ...

edit: I started Ubuntu with the live CD and typed gedit /booot/grub/menu.lst which gave me a blank file. Is that normal?

Slackware :: Can't Start 13.37 On VirtualBox 4.0.6

May 7, 2011

Actually, Slack64 runs just fine under VirtualBox on my old HP under WinXP, But the installer for Slack86 won't boot under VirtualBox on my Toshiba Netbook under Win7 starter. I tried updating the 13.1 install I have on there, but I get the same kernel panic when I try to reboot that. It always bails just as it is switching over to the new kernel. The dump fills my screen so I can't see the actual error. How can I capture that initial startup log? Slack86 runs just fine on my old Compac Armada 1700 (266PII 92M/12G), but that's a very different environment.

Slackware :: Start The Various DE's From Runlevel 3 ?

Mar 19, 2010

I normally boot into runlevel 3. KDE is my default DE. I use

Code:

To open KDE. I would like to give the other DE's (full install of Slackware current) a fair try, but I am having trouble starting the other DE's from the command line. They all work from runlevel 4 using the kdm chooser, but that's just a hassle and in all honesty will likely irritate my lazy-bone to the point of not using them on a regular basis.

Booting into runlevel 4 isn't a good option because I am frequently experimenting and booting to the command line makes troubleshooting easier. What do I need to do to be able to start the other DE's in runlevel 3?

Debian Multimedia :: X Won't Start After Upgrade To Squeeze

Mar 5, 2011

After upgrading to squeeze I have now X Server 1.7.7 installed and it won't start.
When I try to run startx script, monitor gets blank for few seconds and then I get back to command prompt and no errors is displayed.

When I try the same as root, system locks up with blank screen and no functioning keyboard.

Initially I had kernel 2.6.28 which worked fine with earlier Lenny's X Server and Matrox P650 AGP video card. After upgrade I found, that Matrox P650 is not longer supported in new xorg and I swapped it to Matrox G550 AGP card.

Tried mga driver's many options, upgraded to kernel 2.6.37.2, tried with Matrox G200 PCI and Savage 4 Pro AGP card but without a success.

With kernel AGP support turned on I got both with Matrox G550 and Savage card an MTRR error: "error setting MTRR, Invalid argument (22)". Without AGP support in kernel, Matrox G550 gets initialised as PCI card and no errors and X still not working. Same with Matrox G200 PCI card.

With vesa driver the behavior is also the same and output at the end of Xorg.log file is almost the same.

So I understand, that this is some X server problem?

Nothing special in xorg.conf file and tried without it also.

End of the Xorg.0.log file:

Fedora Installation :: F13 Kernel Upgrade, Os Will Not Start?

Mar 8, 2011

I just updated my kernel on Fedora 13. The bug update thing popped up, I clicked install, it asked me to restart, I did this, now the loading bar on boot gets to the end then stops and goes no further. A google search showed people using older versions of Fedora have had some issues similar because of their nVidia graphics card, which I also have, however I can't find a solution. There is no terminal to play with, no error message, so I have very little to go on. I have a java project for uni on there I need to rescue so any help would be very welcome.

Extra update, while starting up I pressed esacpe and was giving the option of an interactive start up which pretty much confirmed it was a problem with the nVidia card, told me that the driver wasn't installed with warning writern (is this a word?) next to it orange writing which didn't seem to positive. It seems that spamming escape earlier in the boot lets me play with grub. Using the old kernel to boot doesn't seem to help. So ready for those solutions now.....

Ubuntu Installation :: XServer Will Not Start After Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04?

May 2, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 and when trying to boot, the computer would hang at the splash screen. Going into recovery mode showed nothing in the log files. The Xorg and gdm logs were zero bytes but had the proper timestamp. I tried and tried, but could not get it to boot until I removed the nvidia-current package. Then the computer will boot, but the screen is partially corrupted with just a blue background. I can hit enter, then type my password and I can actually login, but I can't see a thing. I can cycle through the resolutions with Ctrl +, but the screen just still has a blue background and nothing else. Trying to boot in failsafe X mode gives the same screen. I tried putting the vesa driver in the xorg.conf, but no change.

I've tried the i915.modeset=0 boot option. I've tried the "xforcevesa" boot option, but nothing will give me a readable screen. As soon as I re-installed the nvidia-current package and ran nvidia-xconfigure, the problem came back and it hangs again. At this point, I'm stuck. I would settle for a plain VGA screen at this point, but I can't even seem to get that. I've read several posts here with similar problems and tried every solution put forth, I think, but have not found a solution. When the upgrade wanted to install the new /etc/default/grub, I kept my old one. I compared the two files at the time, but I didn't see anything new, but maybe I missed something. What new items if any does the upgrade put into /etc/default/grub?
