View 7 RepliesIve been trying to install gparted (from source) but configure fails with the error
Code:
Which is odd because it looks like libuuid is installed, i think its installed as part of e2fsprogs which is installed (according to synaptic). Does anyone know how i might resolve this? or is it safe to compile anyway?
As a side question, i was going to install with synaptic, but the version of gparted there was 0.6.2 while the version on the website was 0.8.0. i tried apt-get update and apt-get upgrade but the package manager version was always 0.6.2. is it usual for the package manager version to be out of step like this, or is there something else i could have done to update it?
I tried to upgrade my slackware xfce 13.0 >> 13.1. I read "man slackpkg" first, and then I did exactly what I read at the man pages, my system was in init 1 mode.
The mirror I used it was the Greek mirror for 13.1. The command slackpkg upgrade-all was running ok until the "r" letter after that all packages did not upgraded because it was ERROR CHECKSUMS.md5 to all of them. Slackpkg did not upgrade all this packages but just check them and them skip them.
When everything stopped I reboot but at loading time it stops and I have this message: "libuuid.so.1:cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory."
After that I have 2 options to press control-d to reboot or to give root pass and login as root@(none):
After I login I cant connect to internet, I cant shutdown the system only reboot it from cl, I even cant go to init 1 or anything else. I dont know if I can fix the problem but I have to try...
We are pleased to present one of our new creations: pkgbuild, a tool written in standard C++, using libCURL, ZLib, BZip2 and libLZMA (part of XZ). It is a modern Slackware packages builder, network-transparent, multi-architecture, designed to greatly simplify the creation of a package, automatically executing the required post processing.
What does it do? Recognize and build packages for the following architectures: i386, i486, i586, i686, x86_64, IA64, IA32e, s390, s390x, sparc and sparc64.

I just netinstalled Squeeze to a netbook with Windows7. The installation went well without any problem. Linux is also working OK. When I boot now, grub does not show Windows7. I took default settings during installation. I mean I did not do anything special. What should i do to fix it? Should I run osprober and grub-update?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWell this pretty much sums up the experience with Slackware current these days. This is not to say it was all plain sailing. So what problems were there?
1) Nvidia drivers did not work, this was fixed by re-compiling the kernel modules and installing a patched or beta driver, but it introduced another fault. However this problem cannot be accredited to Slackware, all operating systems have driver problems after being updated. Nvidia however had a new version out in a couple of days, which completely fixed the problem.
2) The problem introduced by the hacked fix of the older Nvidia driver wouldn't allow me to switch to the generic kernel (it would not create a valid initrd.gz). I think this was because of re-compiling the kernel modules, so I re-installed them and the problem was fixed. Again not a Slackware fault but a samac fault.
3) Program A couldn't find library B. Slackware has moved some libraries from e2fsprogs to util-linux-ng. This may cause some stuff to break if you are using the multi-lib extensions. This was fixed by creating a compat32 package for util-linux-ng. Again not actually Slackwares fault, but a little closer to home. Alien Bob could you update the massconvert.sh please.
That's it so far, after an update that ran to over 500 lines in the change log, an updated kernel, updated glibc, updates X server etc. etc. and three paltry problems none of which could be attributed to Slackware directly.
I'm using Slackware 13.1_64 with multi-lib. Now that 13.37 is out I would like to upgrade my system but thought I would ask if there are any problems or considerations for upgrading multi-lib systems ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm just about to install Alien Bob's multi-lib packages for Slackware64. Everything looks easy, but I've got a question about this part of the instructions:
Quote:
After installing the -compat32 packages, you may have to re-install your binary Nvidia or Ati video X.Org drivers. These driver packages contain both 64bit and 32bit libraries to be maximally useful on a 64bit multilib OS. If you installed the driver files for both architectures, the mesa-compat32 package will overwrite some of the 32bit library files.
On the other hand, if you originally only installed the 64bit driver libraries for your Nvidia/Ati card, it is recommended after installation of the multilib packages, to re-install the binary driver package. This time, choose to install the 32bit driver files as well.
The graphical 32bit applications that you are going to run on your multilib installation will require these 32bit driver libraries. Crashes are likely to occur if you fail to install the correct files.
Right now, I'm on pure 64-bit Slackware64-13.1, and I'm using the Nvidia driver from Slackbuilds.org (along with the nvidia-kernel and libvdpau packages from there too).
So:Do I have both 32- and 64- bit bindary drivers installed as part of the package from Slackbuilds.org?
Could I avoid all this hassle by simply not installing the mesa-compat32 package?
If I do need to reinstall the Nvidia binary driver, do I just upgradepkg --reinstall nvidia-driver-195.36.15-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz?
I'm looking at running -current instead of 13.1, and wondering about 'upgrading' to -current, as well as running multi-lib. I found the following procedures from another post of about a year ago, but I'm not sure from what directory to run such a script:
Code:
# Upgrade to Slackware64-current
upgradepkg --install-new slackware64-current/slackware64/*.t?z
# Download compat32 stuff
[code]....
Should the procedures above work for me? and although I know that things may occasionally break here and there (and get fixed too), are there any known issues right now that would break things on my machine?
I have tried to install this package with yum and also directly - download the rpm, then rpm -Uvh ....
Both yum and rpm hang - yum when running the transaction test.
Any ideas about this package.
This is running F12, uname -r => 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.i686

Can I do this in linux (Slackware)?
Slackware64 multi-lib from AlienBOB 13.1 can't compile VMware Server 2.0.2 build-203138
1. It does run wine 32 bit version ( a package called "64" bit, but there ain't no 64bit wine, right?)
2. It runs 32 bit programs in that wine.
3. It is vanilla 2.6.33.4 kernel 64bit so far.
Shall I go for VirtualBox or can I get VMWare to work any soon? I already did the VMware-server-2.0.2-203138-update-2.patch and got a bit further, but the build of the vmmon just "goes to pieces"?
Code:

I'm running Slack 13.1 64 bit. I'd like to try running multi for 32 bit support so I can run a 32 bit version of firefox using the 32 bit flash plugin. Here's what I did: - followed Alien Bob's Wiki and download and installed all the *txz files. - installed a bunch of required libraries following the instructions on the Wiki - installed the 32 bit 10.1 version of the flash player plugin in $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/ - started the 32 bit 3.6.3 version of firefox; it seems to work fine. - go to about plugins and verify that Shockwave Flash (libflashplayer.so) is version 10.1 r53 and it is enabled. - run "ldd libflashplayer.so" and verified that all libraries are found. - run "ldd /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/firefox-bin" and verified all libraries are found. - go to [URL]... and click on "test your adobe flash player installation" I will get this error: Adobe Flash Player error: could not load cURL library - I verified (repeatedly) that I do have what I think is the correct package. How can I fix (or start debugging) this error?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop. The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).

This isn't a real problem, just an annoying matter of pride.
View 14 Replies View RelatedAnyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
Now that Ubuntu 10.04 has multi-touch capabilities built-in, if I do not have a multi-touch screen or surface device, can I get 2 USB mice and get 2 pointers on the screen? One for the right hand and one for the left hand as I am ambidextrous, and would find it very convenient to have 2 mice.

How can i set it so that 1 CPU has several Cores just as windows would recognize this machine if i were installing directly to the hardware vs via a VM.Ive searched for 2 days staright trying to address this issue, very little progress, Does anyone know where a XEN support forum is? all i get is the citrix xen support forums.
here is the best info i have found on this, but i dont know how to change this for my CPU to work, when i enter this in my xen config it essentially ignores it and just takes the value of vcpu= so windows shows 2 CPUs each with ONLY one core. just curious if there was some discussion about reasons (not)-including Lua in stock Slackware packages ? IMHO it perfectly fits to distro's KISS philosophy, is very small and packaging maintenance is very easy (only glibc dependency, simple compilation and installation proces). Slackware contains programming language implementations of Common Lisp, Guile Scheme, Ada 95 which I find more exotic then Lua in these days. I know there are some histroical reasons and keeping continuity but anyway ...
