Slackware :: Unable To Boot After Install Of NetSecL?

Mar 2, 2010

I downloaded NetSecL today to try it out and see what it contains. At first I tried installing it to USB, which after reboot gave me a kernel panic. So I tried installing to my spare laptop, dedicated for testing. Installation went flawless, no errors whatsoever, but when I rebooted the strangest thing happened.

Half of my screen was filled with 07 07 07 and nothing else. No errors on screen, nothing. Not even the LILO boot screen, which I got when booting from USB (just before the kernel panic).

I've used this particular laptop (HP Compaq NX7010) lots of times with a variety of OS and LiveCD, just to try and test, and never have I seen this before.

what this strange behaviour is? I tried installing another OS but got the same behaviour, so I booted from GParted LiveCD, formatted the disk and created a new partition table. After that I was able to install whatever OS I wanted (except the NetSecL).

After the operation completed , I was unable to run anything , everything I clicked on generated the message ( I dont actually remember clearly ) KDE/init/ ' unable to open terminal' Now that I rebooted my system , I get the following error :

++ Kernel Panic - Not syncing : no init found , Try passing init = option to kernel.

Ive looked up some forums and the ways they suggest does not work.

Slackware :: Install Puppy 525 On Slackware 13.37 PC As A Dual-boot Using LILO?

Jul 18, 2011

I'm trying to install Puppy 525 on my Slackware 13.37 PC as a dual-boot using LILO. Puppy is living, all on it's own, in sda6, a 6 GiB partition. It got there by using the Puppy Universal Installer and selecting a 'Full' install, not a 'Frugal' install. I cannot find 'LILO' type instructions, only 'GRUB' type instructions.

Has anyone succeeded in doing a hard drive install of Puppy with the LILO boot loader?

Edit: I'll probably regret it, but I used Puppy's GRUB installer.

Slackware :: Unable To Dual Boot 13.1 And 13.0

May 26, 2010

I had a perfectly working basic 13.0 install on hda4; I installed 13.1 on hda1 and added lilo with an entry for each using expert mode during setup but now neither will boot from this lilo (both try but fail along the way; 13.0 comes up with some errors about sda and 13.1 screen turns black and does nothing) During the 13.0 startup it seemed to use the 13.1 kernel as there was a penguin in the top left instead of the "cat wearing a mask" image that usually shows when it boots.

I think 13.1 installed perfectly and the screen going black is another issue (I don't know why I think that but I just feel it did, it gets further along in boot up)I've managed to get 13.0 back up and bootable by chrooting in and reinstalling lilo but strangely I had to go into its lilo.conf and change sda4 back to hda4 (before this install it had been hda4 and I can't understand why it had changed) I'm running an advent 7101 laptop and have had 12.2 and 13.0 dual booting previously.

Slackware :: Unable To Boot Directly In Runlevel 1: Bug Or New Feature?

Nov 16, 2009

Sometimes, when I need to affect some quick changes on my box, I boot up in runlevel 1 by adding "single" to my kernel line in the Grub menu. I use Grub because I also have Vista+RHEL+CentOS for operational reasons and then Slack for everything else.Since I upgraded to Slack13 I noticed that this was not working. I assumed that it was because I had installed on a encrypted LV, so I tried it on VirtualBox installs. I tried both on GRUB and LILO on the Virtual Slack. I tried both the 32 and 64 bit versions. It does not work.

Slackware :: Unable To Install The Lilo

Jul 4, 2010

I have been given a new old computer, Asus K8N-E with a 2GHz AMD Athlon 64.OpenBSD and Debian works like a charm. But with Slackware 13.1, LILO won't be installed properly. There are two disks: a 10GB ATA-drive with the system and a 250GB SATA-drive as a data repository.

Apparently the computer insists that the SATA is the first disk. Subsequently the bootable partition is not on the first disk and disables LILO to be installed. This is when I try to install LILO to a partition. When it is installed to MBR, it says something about overlapping and can't boot.

Slackware :: Unable To Install The Virtualbox

Apr 16, 2010

Just grabbed Slackware64-current and installed on my laptop. Also put Alien Bob's multilib on.need it for my Absoft fortran compiler. The problem I'm having is that VirtualBox-3.1.6 doesn't install. I've looked at other problems on the list related to this and I don't think that any of the ones that I've seen applies to my situation. My feeling is that there is an incompatibility problem with gcc. The stock kernel was compiled with gcc-4.4.3 which comes with Slackware64-current. However, Bob's multilib backdates this to gcc-4.3.3. So, when the Virtualbox installation procedure runs it sees a kernel compiled with a version of gcc that is different from the one that is currently installed and chokes. recompile the kernel with the current gcc. Haven't done a kernel compile in a long time though and I'd like to get it right. So, my question is "Is the stock .config file in the linux source folder the one used to configure the default kernel?". I like the stock kernel and would like to recompile with all the bells 'n whistles in the stock kernel.

Slackware :: Unable To Identify Tty Name Error On New Install

Oct 4, 2010

Just installed slackware 13.0 32bits using the usb-based netinstall. Did a minimal cli install and unchecked bash (since I wanted to use tcsh on this particular OS). But now on first boot it tells me that it shows an error message indicating "unable to identify tty name" and won't let me login (I'm using the root account since I haven't yet set up additional users). My question is, is the error happening because I unselected bash during installation? If so, is there any config file that I can modify to get it to recognize tcsh and let me log in? or if that isn't the problem, where do I set then the tty name?

Code:

The following NEW packages will be installed:

Worth mentioning also, I managed to install Gnome from [URL] without any problems immediately prior to this error message starting to appear.

I've been using Debian and Ubuntu derivatives for the last couple of years, so I'm comfortable using the terminal and possibly doing some more advanced stuff.

I need boot manager like Grub to boot from the hard drive /dev/sda.I've always had the installing operating system do this automatically, and I expected Slackware 13.37 would act like them other modern distributions, but no such luck.

However, I'm not sure how to proceed with partitioning; at the moment I have about 20gb for openSUSE root, a swap partition and the rest of the 320gb disk is home. Do I just need to add a root partition for Slackware, or are things more complicated than that?

Slackware :: New 13.1 Install The System Boot To A Command Prompt And Then Run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 To Start X?

Jul 9, 2010

2nd and 3rd might be linux kernel problems but may help someone else so I included here.1st -- run level 4, /etc/rc.d/rc.4 and xdm -nodaemonJust installed 13.1 on an odd system, including building a new kernel. One thing I do is have the system boot to a command prompt and then run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to start XBut I found that the rc.4 uses xdm -nodaemon flag and it was causing problems so I removed and all is pretty good. I still see some odd behavior with the virtual ttys sometimes.2nd -- when building a new kernel, I found I need the device-mapper butcouldn't tell if that was a linux kernel issue or something to do with lilo, I didn't want and don't need multiple disk devices like for LVM or MD so I didn't plan to have this enabled.3rd -- CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23 When that kernel config option was selected and I have only an EXT4 filesystem, the filesystem was mounted as an EXT2, even though the kernel had no EXT2 feature. /etc/fstab specified EXT4 but the mount command showed EXT2. A silent problem that could leave an unpleasant surprise since EXT2 hos no journaling.4th -- I had to run lilo -C by hand in a virtual tty before finishing the install. This was what I had to do when installing 13.0 on different hardware. It seems that the lilo part of the install needs some sorting out.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Unable To Boot Xen Kernel

Nov 9, 2010

I am unable to boot the xen kernel but can boot the desktop kernel. The machine boots and the last message I see is:
(Xen) Created cpupool 0 with Scheduler SMP Credit Scheduler (Credit)

After this the screen just turns into a random mess. It looks like graphics memory is pointing at a area of memory filled with random data. The computer actually boots but the display is unusable and the keyboard fails (num lock doesn't work). I can cleanly halt by pressing the power button and waiting for disk activity to stop. After reading several other threads I've tried various combinations of vga=mode-0x0f00 and nomodeset but the result is always the same. I've set the vga mode to 0x0f00 as I actually get to see up to the "Created cpupool...." in this mode. The system boots without any issues with opensuse 11.2.

I'm using a gigabyte GA-Q35M motherboard and the output from lspci is:
