I know, I know, this discussion this question is not asked for the first time but it doesn't work. I even reinstalled my Slackware on my netbook. lilo.conf: append="vt.default_utf8=1" /etc/profile.d/lang.sh: LANG=de_DE.utf8 (is shown in the output of locale -a) I did not put my configs in my home folder; everything is new cerated. Now, when I create a file
I have followed the instructions at http://www.vcn.bc.ca/~dugan/setting-up-slackware.html (under "Making Firefox Perfect"), but I still get the error message"Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (rtsp) isn't associated with any program."
I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!
I do have trouble in configuring my wireless network, though i configured it as what Alien BOB say(http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...ckware:network) and google some similar Threads. My latop is Asus F83vf, wireless card is Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. The code when I run lspci command is code...
I want to download the Slackware 13.1 ISO to my Windows system and create a DVD or CDs to install on a separate Linux system (that system currently has Slackware 12.1.0). I went to the php page and clicked on the link, but all I got was a file that's only 26.3 KB. Seems like an ISO image should be a lot bigger than that.Is there something else I need to download first? Will this even work? How should I download the ISOs?Am I missing something?
I just fully installed slack 13.37 on my laptop. I was trying to use minicom. But after I typed the command line 'minicom -s' or 'minicom', I did not get the minicom window, the curson stop at the console and never return back until I kill the minicom process.
I recently installed Slackware 13.37 and every time I start X the lights on my monitor flash on and off and my monitor goes black and does not come back. I tried most of the window environments (X, Cholesterol-free, etc) and I'm running out of ideas.
I just bought a new printer an Epson Artisan 50. I can not get it to work for nothing. I get error: /etc/cups/interfaces/EPSON-Artisan-50 failed PPD is from [URL]
I have 13.0_64 installed. Found gksu on slackbuild.org. I downloaded it and followed the links to the dependencies and built and installed each one mentioned. gksu built okay and gave me a package which I installed. If I open the run command and enter "gksu thunar" I get this error
Code: The gksu-run-helper command was not found or is not executable. I'm lost at this point. Forgot to mention that I am running Xfce.
I just logged in to my remote shell account like I always do: as an ordinary user, because root login is disabled in sshd. Then I may want to become root with the 'su -' command.
But the 'su -' command did not work today. Every time I tried, I got this laconic message: "Sorry."
Note that I wasn't even given a chance to enter the password. Just 'su -', Return, "Sorry."
I logged in to the service host control panel and rebooted the system. I can su - and be root again.
Fine, but... What happened?!! I searched Google and only found reports of people who at least were given the chance to enter the password.
I know this type of upgrade question is asked regularly so I apologise in advance if its annoying.
Im currently running 12.2, and Im wondering when 13.1 may be available? have there been many problems with 13.0? I've been working quite alot so havent been checking in that often lately.
also, would my old .tgz packages work with 13.1, or would I need to rebuild them as .txz?
compile slim-1.3.1 (last stable) on slackware-current but it failed. So I use svn version, compilation worked but when I launch slim, X is started but slim crashed.I have this message in slim.log :
Code: /usr/bin/xauth: creating new authority file /var/run/slim.auth X.Org X Server 1.7.5
So I have installed Slackware 13.37 into VBox, for testing before I update my 13.1 partition on my desktop. Now I'm having a problem getting Flash to work, I keep getting the error
Code: Adobe Flash error: could not load cURL library That is all the error says, I have checked and curl is installed and the flash player is in the right directory. So any help would be appreciated. Also here is a complete list of installed packages [URL]..
I had been running Slackware64 13 almost since it came out and recently upgraded to Slackware64 13.1.Every thing looked to be working well until I tried to burn a DVD with k3B. It starts the burn process but then dies and says that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device".I was able to put in a DVD+RW and erase it without a problem, but when trying to burn to a DVD-R it stops and gives me the error.I checked cdrecord and it is owned by root in the root group.
I'm trying to install OpenShot for the second time. I was originally trying to make a slackbuild for this, when a new one appeared in SBo. It does not work for me, however. It seems that it has to run a python install script and this fails. The package then complains that it cannot find the mlt python bindings.
How can I get aliases working as root? Here is my Slackware 13.1's /etc/profile file followed by my *Slackware 11's* /etc/profile file [as a comparison]. My Slackware 11's root aliases work in addition to my username ones *without* needing a separate .bashrc in my home dir. In S13.1 I have created a .bashrc for my username and it works fine, but I want those same aliases operating when I'm root, and cannot for the life of me figure how to achieve it.
S13.1 /etc/profile: # /etc/profile: This file contains system-wide defaults used by # all Bourne (and related) shells. # Set the values for some environment variables: export MINICOM="-c on" export MANPATH=/usr/local/man:/usr/man export HOSTNAME="`cat /etc/HOSTNAME`" export LESSOPEN="|lesspipe.sh %s" export LESS="-M" # If the user doesn't have a .inputrc, use the one in /etc.....
My crontabs under root are working fine, but I can't seem to get my user crontabs to work.
When I do a crontab -l -u <user>, I get a listing of the crontab file, but it never is executed.
I've been reading about cron.allow and cron.deny, but I can't find those in the slackware distro. Is there something special that I need to do to allow user crontabs in Slackware? (version 13.1 if that helps)
I just installed p7zip with GUI from slackbuilds, but there is a problem, since i can't get it to work with XFCE4. After looking into package, i noticed that .desktop files are installed into:
and if i look inside of one of these files, the syntax is quite KDE specific and are probably supposed to be seen in a menu when you right click on file. So the big question is: is it possible to make XFCE4/Thunar do something similar? So far i have tried to view p7zip_extract_to.desktop file in a text editor and i learned, that the command for this looks like this:
Code:
p7zipForFilemanager xd %U
And if I right click on archive and then select "Open With Another Application" and then input this command, then double click on archive, i get this nice pop up:
7zip.png
Which is fine for extracting, but when it comes to creating archives, it's a bit inconvenient to do this every time i need something archived. I would would really like to have 7zip menu when i right click on file, so i welcome ideas on this matter.
So I recently installed Slackware 13.1 and now want to get my D-Link DWA-140 to work with it. However I'm quite an amateur at Linux and can't seem to figure out how to. After following many different how-tos and tutorials this is where I am: I got 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1 (supposedly USB driver)package and rt2870.bin (supposedly firmware) in my root catalog. What I have already done with them:
make & make install in 2010_0709~ blacklisting modules 2x00usb, 2x00lib, 2800usb modprobe rt2870sta copying rt2870.bin to /lib/firmware
Regardless of everything, my adapter still is not active.. and how can I make the OS load the module at startup?
I'm trying to get a Sans Digital raid set up for Slackware. It uses Highpoint Rocketraid control card. I downloaded and built the module for the driver and finally got it to work with an initrd. The raid is set up and mounts to /media/disk1. The drive seems to be working fine. The problem I'm having is I can't get the control software to work. Neither CLI or WebGui. Has anyone made this work with Slackware?
My area does not have broadband, but I am able to get 3G on my cell phone. So, I've been tethering it to my laptop when needed, but what I'd like to do is set up my Slackware 13.0 box (which is configured to run as firewall/router/dhcp server so that I can just turn on my phone's wireless router program, and then share it out over the whole network in my house. I'm using a Gigabyte b/g wireless card, which has the RT61 chipset in it. I have NO problems at all getting the wireless card to work with just setting up rc.inet1.conf. The only problem here is when I need to take my cell phone with me, I will not be able to simply turn it back into a WAP, and have my Slackware box auto reconnect to it.
This is why I started looking into using WICD. I do NOT run X, so that's why WICD fits the bill, since it has a cli version. First I tried installing the version that came on the CD. No dice there. I removed that package, and tried the 1.7 package that's on the mirrors under current. I used slackpkg to install it. WICD will run, see wlan0, sees my WAP and a few others, but it fails to connect. It attempts to up the interface, and use dhcp to get an ip, but it fails everytime. My phone's WAP program only does WEP, but I can't get WICD to get an IP with our without WEP enabled. I made sure that my rc.inet1.conf file does not reference any interfaces.
Try any quicktime site... apple trailers etc. I've tried:
mplayerplugin that comes with Slack 13 mplayerplugin svn compiled from source, with Seamonkey vlc plugin for firefox
One of two things always happens: it "loads" forever, or it crashes the browser. I don't understand. The kicker is that LOCALLY played mov files do seem to work (download some here [URL])! Which makes no sense.
The sc spreadsheet app doesn't really work in 64bits. It launches but you're unable to do anything with it, it's not possible to enter any values in the cells or do anything else. It works fine in 32bit though.
To make it work properly in 64bits, you can use this patch, borrowed from debian: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...changes-7.16-3
And there is also this patch to make DESTDIR work properly with the Makefile: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...-destdir.patch
I have myself a perfectly working slackware 13.1 64 on my pc (well, tbh I gotta solve some ati and kde compose issues),BUTI can get no joy when trying to make it work in friend's pc.The slackware 13.1 32 install runs ok. I can even log in and run a init 4 session on kde.But with no apparent reason hard crashes (completely frozen system) hit the system aleatory (never last more than 5 minutes)
I'm trying to "convert" my cousin with Slackware somehow. Her laptop is an Acer Timeline 3810T. But i'm having some problem with the hotkey fn+f5. F5 works, but fn+f5 (should have been XF86Display) doesn't. It doesn't generate any acpi nor x event as i checked (on slackware at least). BIOS upgraded but wouldn't fix, searched but couldn't find any talk about this.I wonder if anyone had experienced the same problem. Hope i could fix this else i probably must install XP (if this was mine, i probably would be fine with xrandr though :P)
I am thinking of using slackware 64 bit with awesome 3 wm. The thought process behind this is that I will learn a lot of how things work, which I am anxious to do. I like speed but knowing what is going on under the hood is paramount to me. I like knowing all my processes and knowing where all my files are and exactly what is on my computer but where I run into trouble is that this might just be too complex for me. I'm not too great at programing so...
After deciding to get into Linux and start learning the secrets of it, I decided to install it on my laptop. Now I have a small problem. How can I get my wireless connection to work on it? I have read few guides and tips on the internet regarding the iwconfig and the rc.wireless_conf files, but it didn't get me anywhere. I have Slackware 13.37
I maintain my slackware by using slackpkg-current. When I upgraded to the new OpenSSH 5.4, I noticed that my key method (passwordless) doesn't work anymore. I checked and checked the conf files but everything looks fine.I tried debug but can't get it to work, here is the debug:
Mar 15 21:52:15 vmslackware2 sshd[2663]: debug1: rexec start in 5 out 5 newsock Mar 15 21:52:15 vmslackware2 sshd[2622]: debug1: Forked child 2663. Mar 15 21:52:15 vmslackware2 sshd[2663]: debug1: inetd sockets after dupping: 3,
