Slackware :: Can't Get Control Software To Work
Jan 3, 2011
I'm trying to get a Sans Digital raid set up for Slackware. It uses Highpoint Rocketraid control card. I downloaded and built the module for the driver and finally got it to work with an initrd. The raid is set up and mounts to /media/disk1. The drive seems to be working fine. The problem I'm having is I can't get the control software to work. Neither CLI or WebGui. Has anyone made this work with Slackware?

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.
My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?
The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.
So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.

I've installed 13.1 and the new GSB. I like it a lot (better than old versions), but the volume applet doesn't work.I did some reading and apparently this is due to a conflict between the GNOME people and the Pulse Audio people. So I was wondering if it was at all possible to use the xfce volume applet.

Newbie slackware user here, I'm having some issues getting keyboard volume control to work properly.I recently fixed my network adapter problem and I managed to get flash player installed despite my minimal knowledge of linux and slackware, but there's yet another small glitch that I can't fix. When I'm logged in as root, keyboard volume controls work perfectly, mute mutes the audio + increases the percentage, - decreases the percentage, etc. However, when I'm logged in as another user and I try to use keyboard volume controls, the bar will pop up in the middle of the screen, but it will be stuck at 0% no matter that I do. (Sound still plays though, it seems that volume is at 100% while the bar in the middle reads 0%).

I got a new computer and got it running Slackware64-current. It's motherboard is an ASUS M4A88TD-M and it's processor is an AMD Phenom II x4 965. I decided to get some chassis fans to improve it's thermal performance. But, since I started the computer after installing the new fan (only one of the 3 I got) the fan's speed is at max and it's very noisy. I'd like Slackware to control it's speed according to temperatures from lm-sensors. Output of # sensors-detect can be found here. Kernel is stock -current 2.6.33.4. Output of # lspci is here.
Code:
gtl@coruscant:~$ sensors
atk0110-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
Vcore Voltage: +1.31 V (min = +0.85 V, max = +1.60 V)
+3.3 Voltage: +3.34 V (min = +2.97 V, max = +3.63 V)
+5 Voltage: +5.08 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V)
+12 Voltage: +12.03 V (min = +10.20 V, max = +13.80 V)
CPU FAN Speed: 2170 RPM (min = 600 RPM)
CHASSIS FAN Speed:3409 RPM (min = 600 RPM)

I started using DWM for my Window Manager really just for the hell of simplicity (I'm an obsessive minimalist) anyways... I can use seamonkey but I do like Firefox more but for some reason it does not load. If from a terminal I type firefox is just simply doesn't load, brings up no errors or anything.
Also, is there a way to control which windows take up what space???

I am using Slackware 13.0 quite out of the box, normally I can change volume for every app using alsamixer. As my laptop is a little bit old working in X uses a lot of resources I have been searching for more and more console based apps. With good results until now.
I started using mp3blaster to listen to music. Great app and all. Only problem I have got is that I have difficulty controlling the volume for it. When in alsamixer I can mute the master channel an control Pcm in small increments so that I can speak about control. When using mp3blaster I have got no control whatsoever. Cant mute the vol channel nor can I control the Pcm2 channel in any way.
My questions are: How do I control the volume in mp3blaster? Why do I have Pcm2 instead of Pcm in mp3blaster? What other info would be needed for anyone to push me in the right direction to solve this problem?

I just finished installing Slackware64 13.37 on my Sony Vaio PCG-7153L, and I'm having issues controlling the LCD brightness of the laptop. It still has the stock Slack kernel 2.6.37.6 SMP The brightness controls worked on Fedora 12-14, as well as the Ubuntu 10.04 live disc. I checked /proc/acpi/, but there's nothing in there to control brightness. I reloaded the sony_laptop kernel module, and from dmesg I get:
Code:
sony-laptop: brightness ignored, must be controlled by ACPI video driver From the Ubuntu bug [URL] and the Red Hat bug [URL] it looks like they've already dealt with this problem. However, as I said earlier, my laptop worked fine with Fedora 12-14.I know Slackware does minimal fiddling with the kernel, so I'm thinking this might be an upstream kernel bug...

when running XFCE, changing the font in qtconfig fails to change fonts in KDE apps such as ktorrent and koffice. This is rather annoying because default KDE fonts are excessively large and blurry on my monitor. Is there any way to force KDE apps to obey qtconfig settings?

I'm looking for a tool to control network bandwidth (per application i.e. totem), something like trickle (a userspace bandwidth shaper).Trickle is a bit outdated, latest ver. 1.0.6 (2003), and it won't compile under -current. There's a slackbuild available, dated 2004.
Quote:
$ make
gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I. -Wall -Icompat -g -O2 -c trickle.c

Slackware 12.1 on Acer Aspire 5710 laptop.Intel HDA audio. There used to be a mixer control for microphone (or 'Mic'). A few months ago it vanished. The microphone works, but is at a fixed level and always with annoying playback through the speakers. I cannot change the recording level as there is no mixer control.

If a mechanism is controlling fan speed dynamically there must be a processor involved especially if it is PWM. Is BIOS the code regulating this and does a temp sensor interrupt the CPU to run the code? Is there a Micro controller on the board so the CPU is not involved?

I have searched online with no success. The brightness control is working fine on my laptop. Problem is that the bars don't get rendered on screen. Instead I get like a static white line on screen everytime I press the brightness control. On boot however, I can see the correct bars. It is once I start my xsession, the bars do not show up. Here are my specs:
Slackware 13
Xorg Radeon driver
kernel 2.6.29.8

I have a slack 64 13.1 box, that I want to be able to control the monitor of from my laptop. Here's the scenario: I can already control the music remotely via X forwarding banshee to my laptop (banshee shows up on the laptop and music comes out on the desktop). Now I want to be able to open a movie on the desktop's display via the laptop.
Now googling this comes up with solutions for X forwarding, but I don't want it to forward X I want it to display on the desktop.

I have never tried to do anything 'remotely'.My 87 year old uncle lives in British Columbia, Canada and I live in Quebec, Canada. Here is what I would like to try to do:
I would like to connect to his PC from my PC and then set up a Gmail email account for him. I think that I am saying that I would like to be 'as if' I were sitting in front of his PC at his house. If this is possible, what software do I need on my Slackware PC to connect to his Windows PC? What software does he need on his PC?

I added the Brightness Applet to the top panel, but when I change the brightness, nothing happens. D:I can't stand this, it's like my screen is stuck on supa-bright and it's hurting my eyes. When I load my PC up in Windows, the brightness control works just fine. But it doesn't seem to work on Ubuntu.

Yesterday my computer started acting up. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the update, but it happened shortly after, so i'm thinking that it's likely. My laptop has one of those touch-pads that controls the volume. Now it won't work. I tried going into preferences<sound to change the volume, but that doesn't even work. As much as I change the volume, it just stays where it's at.
Volume control on the panel won't work either. Also, another problem I'm experiencing is that when I go on ..... all of the videos play really fast. =/ not sure if it's ubuntu related, but this problem started at the same time as the other.

I've been having problems in getting my microphone input to work. Frustratingly, it works sometimes and doesn't work at other times, and I have yet to discover what causes the difference. I've been testing it with the Skype Sound Test Service.
My laptop, like most others, has a built-in microphone as well as a microphone jack (which I'm using). In kmix, there are sliders for:
What do all of these do, and how do they relate to the two microphone sources? Can I use them to select input from one source while silencing the other? Where can I read about this?
I'm running Kubuntu Koala, so I asked this question over in the Kubuntu forum, but no one there has responded. That was probably not the best place to try (for this issue, at least).

spent endless time trying to get multiple monitors going and have had a bit of success -- got two showing just fine. However, when I try to access the page I mention in the title, Slackware hangs hard -- only the red button will get me out. This is recent. I had dual monitors going before and that didn't happen, I think one monitor was at 800x600 and the other at some wide screeen rez. Anyway all by itself the 800x600 decided to go to 1024x768. Now, note that it all shows fine, no issues of any kind on the monitors themselves, xrandr works

I bought a Toshiba Nb205 laptop with a Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) inside. After I first got it I installed Ubuntu onto it, and that's where the problems started. After everything was installed I noticed that my sound doesn't work. So I looked everywhere. I tried so many solutions offered on these forums including messing around with Alsamixer and nothing seemed to be working. Then one day I luckily stumbled upon this website that directed me here: [URL] So I went there and picked the Linux 2.6(X86)(DEB) from the drop down list and installed it. I rebooted my machine, and I now had sound.
However, the only problem is that I can't control the volume of the sound. When I play something, it stays at one volume and one volume only. Nothing on sound preferences will work. The only way I can raise or lower the volume is if I do it in the application that I run, like if I am playing a ..... video, I have to use their volume control to control the volume. My master volume won't work at all.

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 running on a pc at work. On my Windows pc I can use a free utility called Teamviewer which you run on the pc (no install needed) and then you connect without any need to VPN into my work network.
So, what would be the best way to connect from home and remotely connect to my Ubuntu system at work?

I am having trouble getting the audio to work on this computer (ACER 5570-4765 with PCM Audigy ZS 2) running Ubuntu Studio 10.10. I can get JACK to run without errors but I am not sure if settings are correct. For now I would just like to listen to music using Audacious but I would eventually like to record guitar using Rakarrack (I have this installed but I am having zero luck with this as well).
