Slackware :: 'su -' Command Did Not Work

Jul 14, 2010

I just logged in to my remote shell account like I always do: as an ordinary user, because root login is disabled in sshd. Then I may want to become root with the 'su -' command.

But the 'su -' command did not work today. Every time I tried, I got this laconic message: "Sorry."

Note that I wasn't even given a chance to enter the password. Just 'su -', Return, "Sorry."

I logged in to the service host control panel and rebooted the system. I can su - and be root again.

Fine, but... What happened?!! I searched Google and only found reports of people who at least were given the chance to enter the password.

Slackware :: Slackware Current Installpkg Line 59 Rev Command Not Found

Feb 28, 2011

First time I've done this in awhile Upgrading my Slackware64 -current VM, following the standard routine that has always worked in the past -

Code:

slackpkg clean-system
slackpkg install-new
The clean-system removed 2 packages -
util-linux-ng
eggdbus

Installpkg will no longer work, complaining that the rev command is not found. The problem hit with the removal of util-linux-ng. I cp'd util-linux to ~/. Extracted with tar and executed the doinstall. Fixed.

Slackware :: Alienware Aurora & Slackware 13 - Will It Work?

Jan 12, 2010

I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.

Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.

My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.

If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!

Below is my order list from Dell:

Programming :: Use The Seq Command But Can't Get It To Work?

Mar 24, 2011

I have a script that will build a list of hosts and it works fine Code: for ((i=$START; i<=$END; i++)); do echo "$NAME$i"; done But I need it to build the START and END on different number formats (i.e. 1 -> 10, 01->10, 001 ->010)

I am trying to use the seq command but can't get it to work quite right with the -w flag in the following Code: for ((myseq=$START; myseq<=$END; myseq ++)) do echo "$NAME${myseq}" done I am fully aware that this syntax is probably wrong, and need to know how to correct it.

Slackware :: Command For Uninstalling Packages By Program Name?

Aug 19, 2010

how to uninstall packages via the program name? For example, if I want to uninstall the program "KWordQuiz" then I would usually have to use the command removepkg -package name But unfortunately I have a fresh install and want to get rid of a lot of programs. So instead of using the package repository and finding each package which would take days (maybe) and removing them individually I'd like to remove a program and all its supporting packages. I am probably just rambling on... Umm, so yes is there a way, or do I have to suck it up and sit at the keyboard for days.

Slackware :: Use The Ls Command To List Files In One Column?

Sep 20, 2010

I am doing a spreadsheet for work (for importing data into a new database) and I have hundreds of image files which need to have just their file names in one column called Product Code. Is it possible to use the ls command to list the contents of a directory in one single column so that I can copy and paste to the spread sheet?

Also, is there a single command to remove the file extentions for a batch of files? Bulk rename is what I need, I guess but just to remove the file extension (.jpg on all of them). The normal use of ls lists them in multiple column form and when I copy and paste those it will not let me copy just one cloumn at a time. The spreadsheet only has three columns:

New Product Code Old Product Code Pictures New Product Code will be left black, and the Old Product Code is just the image names. The picture column will be the patch-to-the-image for each image. I am not sure that is even possible in a spreadsheet.

Slackware :: Rev: Command Not Found After An Upgrade To Current

May 15, 2010

I'm using Slackware current. I've updated my current after about two months from the last update, and since there was a huge number of changes I'm having some problems. In particular, I've forgot (my fault!) to give a "slackpkg install-new" before rebooting, so now I'm getting stuck...

Installpkg now claims a "rev" command, but I cannot figure how to find it, since the Slackware package browser on the website is still broken (when will it be available?!?!). Now, each time I try to install or upgrade a new package, I get this error:

/sbin/upgradepkg: line 41: rev: command not found
/sbin/installpkg: line 59: rev: command not found

Where can I find the package containing "rev"?

Slackware :: SU Command - Environment Variables Missing

Jun 30, 2010

I've just noticed something odd with 'su'. When you run 'su' with both the '-' (aka -l) and -c command options like this: "su -l user -c command" it doesn't appear to run /etc/profile before running the specified command even though the -l option is specified. If you run "su -l user" without the -c it does run /etc/profile.

Now, on other linux such as fedora it works as expected and runs both /etc/profile followed by the command specified on the '-c'. I'm fairly sure it used to work this way on Slackware (and every other UNIX I've ever used) too. "su -l root -c env" is a good way to see, as you'll find most the environment variables are missing.
