Slackware :: How Does Torrents Work
Mar 14, 2011
I want to download the Slackware 13.1 ISO to my Windows system and create a DVD or CDs to install on a separate Linux system (that system currently has Slackware 12.1.0). I went to the php page and clicked on the link, but all I got was a file that's only 26.3 KB. Seems like an ISO image should be a lot bigger than that.Is there something else I need to download first? Will this even work? How should I download the ISOs?Am I missing something?

I've been trying to get some help with a problem I'm having in Deluge. I started on the Deluge forums but am not really getting much help, so I figured I'd post here and see if maybe someone has an idea of what's going on. code...
I'm running Deluged and using the Web Interface. I start the computer up and download the first Torrent (or set of Torrents) fine. After they're done, if I add any more Torrents then it won't transfer them at all. It shows no Seeders. Peers go up and down like they're trying to connect but losing connection. 20-45 minutes later, it starts downloading. Until I updated to the PPA version, it would download slowly but after updating now it downloads full speed. If I kill Deluged (Rather than waiting a possible 45+ min for it to start) then it starts downloading at full speed right away.

I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!
Below is my order list from Dell:

Is it possible to download the same torrent from two different operating system, or at least from two different Linux on the same computer, and have it updated? I have Ubuntu installed on one partition, the other is Fedora. Transmission is installed on both Linux.

It seems like transmission-cli will only run one torrent at a time. How do I get it to run all my torrents?
Do I need to write a script? If so I could use some help. I'm taking lectures but it's a lot of information to retain.

Torrents work fine on all other machines including on a VM within the affected laptop.
No matter what client I use, nothing ever downloads. For example, right now Transmission says "Downloading from 0 of 0 connected peers - Idle" while WinXP in a virtual machine is downloading at 500 kb/s.
Like I said, it's only one this laptop, with all clients, and it works on a VM.

I've just setup a virtual Ubuntu 10.10 machine on my server running Deluge and WebUI. The WebUI seems to work fine, but if I upload a torrent with a total size over 2Gb I just get an 'error' as soon as the torrent is run.The download folder is a CIFS share to a NAS (Acer Altos EasyStore) folder, I can download torrents that are less than 2Gb in total without any problems.I can read/write large files from the command line or Nautilus but any torrent uploaded to Deluge larger than 2Gb is flagged as 'error' as soon as it is run (with no actual error listed in the torrent details).

I've recently switched to Ubuntu and everything runs perfectly except whenever i'm downloading a torrent in Ktorrent or Transmission it will download for about 5 minutes and then my system will just completely shut off.one tell me why this might be happening? It usually happens whenever it get's above a 2mbps download speed. In windows, however, I can get up to 20mbps and my computer won't even lag... let alone crash.

I have a virtual server which acts mainly as mail server. I wonder whether I could set up a mirror for certain files like Linux ISO images, conference talk recordings and other stuff. How could I seed automatically all torrents from XML feeds plus torrents added by hand? Further conditions: The data files should be accessable via HTTP/FTP, too total traffic and bandwidth uage need to be restricted, plus bonus points for restrictions per feed or file.

I'm running rtorrent 0.8.6/0.12.6 with the rtorrent.rc below. I have watch directories set up and all the torrents picked up from the watch directory will automatically resume after a few seconds if I try to pause them. This is not a problem with manually added torrents. Everybody that uses rtorrent uses watch directories why should mine be a problem?

I usually add torrents to transmission through my iPhone. I have Transmission watch the 'Attachments' folder in my Dropbox. I also have Transmission auto add the torrent and delete the torrent file when done. Thing is if I don't have Transmission running when I add the torrent to my dropbox folder. Transmission doesn't start up to download the torrent. Is there a script that can watch for torrent files in my Dropbox folder that I can run in Scheduled Tasks to run every 5 min or so. Also when I have it up and running and I do have auto add on. It auto adds it to transmission but then the popup dialog appears to ask if I just want to download one of the files from the torrent or all 10. Is there a way to bypass this?

Beginning on the release day for Firefox 4, my system has been encountering hard freezes (no responsiveness to any key entry and only way to restart is by hitting the reset button). I had installed firefox 4 with no issue, but once it was open, it kept freezing my system. Some addons weren't supported anyways, so I uninstalled it and got back my 3.6. At the time I was using rtorrent, but within minutes of using it since the firefox install, my entire system freezes up.
Naturally I suspect HDD or RAM, but both have been extensively tested. Next I began browsing forums and found some tricks like turning off IPv6 or changing settings via HDPARM, but none have made any difference. I have moved on to using Transmission, and the problem still exists, but it occurs much less frequently.
I have also since then noticed that transfers of files from my 500GB OS/Torrent drive to my RAID 5 array and vice versa moves at 2-4MBytes/s, much too slow. So next I set up my torrent client to download directly to my RAID array, and lo and behold no freezes! Also, while transfering data the system moves at an absolute CRAWL, as in browser windows turning gray, saying that they have stopped responding, etc. I ran a fsck on my 500GB drive, which instantly told me my file system was clean. I'm at my whit's end here! I hate re-posting on a topic, but I feel like I've tried everything!
System Info:
Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit
Kernel 2.6.32-29-generic-pae
AMD Athlon 4450e
1GB RAM, 2.5GB Swap
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard

I'm experiencing complete system freezes when dowloading torrents with more than 800kb/sec (I think this is the limit, I've capped it at 750, and it seems to be running ok now). I had this same problem in Ubuntu aswell. But not in Win 7. The problem also appeared in ubuntu when streaming video through VLC with more than 800kbps.
As my connection gives me quite alot higher download speeds this kind of annoys me, and me being quite new to this whole Linux thing, don't really know what to do. I had a dialogue with someone at Ubuntuforums regarding this, but we pretty much got nowhere.
I have an ASUS 1201N laptop, with ION chipset.

I've been all around the net and can't find a "simple" answer how to block our LAN users from downloading torrents. Is it really that difficult?
Here's our setup:
1. The Server's Configs:
2. sudo gedit /etc/squid/squid.conf
3. sudo gedit /etc/rc.local (to start Firewall rules on bootup)
4. Server NOT a DHCP Server
5. No other iptables rules are configured, just the above ones.
Before in a 1 NIC setup, I blocked Workstations MAC addresses in the Router + Squid Proxy Server (Not Transparent), it worked, but some Online Java Apps didn't work and users can't send/receive email so I abandoned the method.
Now, I installed transparent Squid Proxy with 2 NIC cards, it works, but workstations can still download torrents! I know Squid doesn't block ports, right? So the answer must lie in Iptables Firewall? I basically use Squid just to deny access to Facebook, Friendster, or other "unproductive sites".

How to block torrent downloading by using a Firewall? Or is there another "simple" way?
I've heard that it's better just to allow regular ports (80, 22, 465, etc...) then block all the rest, this way, you can prevent unnecessary ports.
I'm not an Iptables/Firewall expert so can you pls. explain it a bit more detailed if that's the case.
I'm also aware of just telling our users NOT to download torrents, but I just want to prohibit it entirely.
I know I will be the most "uncool" employee in our office.

I would like Canonical to set up an official torrent rss feed with the lastest ubuntu torrents. Users could use set up the feed in their torrent program. On release day they could start the torrent download as soon as possible.
