Slackware :: Startup Hang After "Using /etc/random-seed To Initialize /dev/urandom"?
Feb 19, 2010
I recently tried to upgrade from 2.6.23 to 2.6.32 but kept on getting VFS errors. I had overwritten the old 2.6.23 kernel so there was no going back. Luckily,I had the 2.4.31 kernel still in the /boot directory.
Anyway, I finally got some time to figure out the VFS issues and I managed to solve the VFS kernel panics. It was probably a forgotten configuration setting during the make menuconfig. Now it boots up only to hang right after the "Using /etc/random-seed to initialize /dev/urandom".
Looking at the rc.S script, the next section does the dd if=/dev/urandom of=/etc/random-seed count=1 ...
I know for a fact that it isn't that line that hangs the system. I commented out that line and it still hangs.
Strange thing is that I can boot up 2.4.31 with no problem; but with 2.6.x, I get a hang-up. I did a google and came up with something about rc.udev.new, which I don't have.
Can someone point out to me what is executed right after/etc/rc.d/rc.S? Or maybe point out where it might
be hanging? (To be honest, it's either a hang up or a process that's taking an extraordinary long time to
run.)

I have a server that cannot generate enough entropy to support /dev/random. The particular piece of software having problems can't be configured to use /dev/urandom.
I tried moving /dev/random to /dev/realrandom and symlinking /dev/random to /dev/urandom, but lsof /dev/realrandom still shows processes using it.
In Does urandom share the same entropy of random?, the suggestion is to use mknod /dev/random 1 9. Will this hold across restarts? Should I be using udev somehow?

Does the entropy pool /dev/random used the same to /dev/urandom?
I want to
mknod /dev/random 1 9
to replace the slow random, I think the current entropy is randomly enough, if urandom is based on the same entropy, and all succeed random numbers are generated based on that entropy, I don't think there'll be any vulnerable.

dd is wiping part of the hard drive( 270GB partition ) with /dev/urandom for quite some hours, is there anyway to check the proccess? like speed of the process etc., I read someone doing that with another drive while having access to other terminal because of the system, but since this is directly from the install dvd, I've no clue if there's anyway to do that or not. I'm asking that mainly because:
1) I prefer run things with some kind of verbose mode
2) I accentaly opened the dvd driver (yes I know, but I forgot the install dvd was inside of it), but I closed it right after it, no errors, but it may have stopped working and has just the _ clicking?

new to ktorrent on PCLINUXOS. Downloaded slack 13 and would like to seed but apparantly the download is automaticilly started but the finished file is not uploading.Opened ktorrent>settings>configure ktorrent and asks for path to file then wants a tracker.reading howto create your own tracker sounds very complicated (b/c of dynamic IP, routing, port forwarding, ISP bandwidth) but searching for a third party tracker returns some very cheesy/shady looking websites with tracking services but also links to all kinds of junk , dating services and the like etc.I'm not comfortable with opening my PC to these cheesy looking URLs.
1. What is a safe tracker to use (does Slackware have one?)and will it give me a URL to plug into the ktorrent dialog box?
2.what should my PC firewall settings be. Right now just allow bittorent is checked? I don't want to mess with my router as I just got local networking up and running and don't want to tinker with it.looks like seeding started but very little very slowly. What tracker is being used if I haven't entered a tracker into the dialog box? Is this whole thing safe? I'm used to ftp or http downloads for isos.
Thanks

My problem is that my server randomly hangs. If I remember right it started after an kernel update (can't really remember if it was a kernel update specific, but I did install new updates before this problem occurred), and then I noticed my server was down one day, after that the problems/random freezes continued. And there are no pattern/interval between the freeze ups.
I think that all this started for about 3 weeks ago, so I've never had this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 before.
At first, I thought the source to my problem was an old IDE which I accidentally left in when installing Ubuntu at the first time, so GRUB was sitting on that one. So I backed up almost all of my data, reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 (downloaded from the website) but this time without the old IDE drive. Everything seemed to work, had no crashes or freezes. I do have to mention that the same thing happend to the live CD before I removed the old IDE.
But now the fresh install of Ubuntu seems to hang too. And the worst part of this is that I can't really do anything about it to test or look up what may cause the problem, as I have to access it remotely because I'm on vacation right now (I'll have to get my friend over there and restart it).
When the computer hangs it comes inaccessible from the network, can't even see that it is up in my router. But I do know it is running, else it would have been shut off and then started up again and work.
Before I re-installed it, this problem could be reproduced by surfing the web and watching flash videos in either chromium or Firefox.
And I do know it sounds silly to run a server with the desktop edition installed, but if I don't have any other computer accessible, I use my server instead.
My server specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5 GHz
GFX: XFX Nvidia Geforce 8600GT
Mobo: EVGA 750i FTW
RAM: Corsair Dominator 2GB
HDD: Western Digital 500 GB
I also have no special effects nor do I use any proprietary drivers (I did before I re-installed).
Any ideas of what it might be? Is it a bug which came with the updates, like a bug in the kernel?
I've noticed that there actually are alot of threads like mine around here, but none have provided a working solution.

It seems that my Ubuntu 10.04 (clean install) to randomly freeze / hang (mouse/keyboard unresponsive, only a hard reboot is available as option) but with no garbled screens/windows/etc. There's no pattern why or any application that could be responsible. It could happen ten minutes after it is started or after 2 days but at some point and suddenly the system will become totally unresponsive, freeze and hang up. I used the same PC with Karmic Koala and releases before that (sometimes on for days) with no such problem so it shouldn't be a hardware problem.
I thoroughly check system logs after the hard reboot (System > Administation > Log File Viewer) and there's no entry around the time of each freeze / hang to pinpoint me to something.
The only thing that is certain is that the following errors / warnings always appear in .xsession-errors file:
Here is also some info about my system:
M/B: ASUS P4R800-V DELUXE
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
RAM: 1GB
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9100 IGP

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

Trying to install the Suhosin module with the php 5.2.9 c5-testing repo...it won't run with the php 5.2.9 testing build (there isn't an updated suhosin package against the 5.2.9 build)
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: suhosin: Unable to initialize module
Module compiled with module API=20050922, debug=0, thread-safety=0
PHP compiled with module API=20060613, debug=0, thread-safety=0
What's the best way to handle this from an admin best practices standpoint? I want to do everything possible to keep the suhosin module tracked by yum for future updating etc. Is it best to try to find a suhosin rpm that is built for 5.2.9 and install it with yum localinstall? If not, if I build the module myself, what's the best path to keeping yum/rpm in the loop on this install for future updating via yum?

I've just installed Debian AMD64 on my main box (Intel Q6600, Ati HD4770, Asus P5K) using the DVD install. It boots, but hangs when it tries starting the graphical interface. No reports, no commandline, nothing at all - a nice black screen and completely unresponsive system.
Debian x86 works with no problems.

I have an annoying problem with a 2 nodes cluster that I don't understand.
One of my server is totally shutdown.
When I start cman after a reboot on the other server, it hangs on "Starting fencing...". The process which is actually hanging is : /sbin/fence_tool -w -t 300 -m 45 join
When I start this program manually, I get this output :
# /sbin/fence_tool -w -t 300 -m 45 join
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
(and so on...)
What I don't understand is why the fence_tool program wait for the 2nd node to join the cluster and don't fence the other node.
Here is my cluster.conf :
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<cluster name="ctpsrv-bdd" config_version="7">
<fence_daemon clean_start="0" post_fail_delay="0" post_join_delay="20"/>
<cman expected_votes="1" two_node="1"/>
[Code]....
Would it be a good idea to edit the cman startup script and remove the "-w" option of command fence_tool join, so the command do not hang up ?

Karmic - When I start up and log in, a window for KDE Desktop Sharing Invitation automatically pops up.
Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.
There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."
When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.
I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!

This has been confusing me for a while. It usually takes about 4 or 5 times of hitting the power button for it to start up to the login screen. All it does is go to the Ubuntu splash screen and that's it. The colored dots don't change or anything. It just sits there. I ran the memory test to be sure it wasn't RAM and it ran fine.

OS: 10.04

I just updated to kernel 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.x86_64, and I'm now having a weird issue where my computer will hang during startup and shutdown unless I move the mouse around.
While moving the mouse, it will boot up or shut down normally. Once i stop moving the mouse around it will hang (until I begin to move the mouse again).Once fully booted it acts fine..

Everything worked fine in Kubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). On the upgrade to 10.10 (64-bit) it takes about a minute until I can move the mouse after startup and the integrated memory card reader doesn't work (but the green LED which used to only come on when there was a card in there is now always on). This has been discussed twice before: here (closed and solved by unplugging cardreader which I do not want to do) and here (unsolved but closed as maverick no longer in beta) dmesg (note the errer -110) follows. Let me know if I can/should include any other logs/info!

Is there any Slackware-current or Slackware64-current users in the LQ Slackware forum experiencing lags or slowdown on Dolphin file manager on KDE 4.5.1? I experienced this first on KDE 4.5.0, after the current update KDE to 4.5.1 I still have this problem.
Hovering mouse on a file can take a while, opening a text file with kwrite took several seconds and dolphin window will appear blank (like hang). Sometimes Dolphin crashed when opening file, changing directory or hovering mouse on a file.
Quick googling points to this discussion at http://dot.kde.org/2010/08/31/kde-releases-451 which suggest a bug in libdbus.

I'm running an x86 Slackware 13. When i start emacs with auctex enable, or when i launch latex, the process hang.
For emacs i have found that it's kpsewhich that try to scan my whole home (lot of Gb).
The problem is that i had defined my home directory with a trailing slash. If i remove the trailing slash, there isn't any problem. If you want to reproduce the bug try :
Code:
HOME=/home/you/ /usr/share/texmf/bin/kpsewhich -debug=90 -help
HOME=/home/you /usr/share/texmf/bin/kpsewhich -debug=90 -help
On the doc page of kpathsea, there is a section "tilde expansion" [URL] that say :
Quote:
As a special case, if a home directory ends in `/', the trailing slash is dropped, to avoid inadvertently creating a `//' construct in the path.
So my question is : do you think there is a bug in kpsewhich ?

I have been looking for a lightweight bandwidth monitoring app and came across bmon. It does what I need. However it has an interesting way of exiting.
when it is running and you close it down it ask you 'Really quit (y/n)' and does not shut down. I am used to just right clicking on my desktop and selecting 'leave' when it comes to shutdown time.
A few times now the laptop hangs on shutdown if bmon is open. I guess it is due to the app asking if it should shutdown. Is there a way to disable the app asking or alternatively nuke it for sure with some script on shutdown.
I could search the relevant konsole running the app and go thru the steps to shut it down but sometimes I am in a hurry and it doesn't feel like the way to go anyhow?

spent endless time trying to get multiple monitors going and have had a bit of success -- got two showing just fine. However, when I try to access the page I mention in the title, Slackware hangs hard -- only the red button will get me out. This is recent. I had dual monitors going before and that didn't happen, I think one monitor was at 800x600 and the other at some wide screeen rez. Anyway all by itself the 800x600 decided to go to 1024x768. Now, note that it all shows fine, no issues of any kind on the monitors themselves, xrandr works

I made some hardware upgrades today: installed a new video card, a new CPU cooler, and a DVD burner. Everything seemed fine, but every 10-15 minutes the computer just freezes. Freeze is actually the wrong word since I can still move the mouse's cursor, but it has no effect. Keyboard input is useless and I just have to reboot. On the 3rd reboot fsck checked the root partition and made some changes.
I have checked system/CPU temperature to see if maybe the cooler wasn't working right and checked it's mounts. Everything there is great.
The system hangs whether I'm using the burner or not. (It's an ASUS)
The hangs seem to happen when scrolling a window or changing desktops, but I'm constantly doing something to that effect so it's hard to say if that's the cause.
The card is GALAXY Geforce 240GT. I've never used a Galaxy card so I'm leaning towards that, and have gone back to the old Geforce 9400 in the meantime, but while I'm waiting to see what happens, I was wondering if maybe the filesystem getting modded in the fsck check might point to a filesystem error causing the hangs, or if it seemed more likely that the filesystem was corrupted by the hangs.

cat /etc/fstab

If I reboot I get the message "/dev/mapper/swap" doesn't exist. It seems, that crypsetup doesn't setting up the encrypted block device. SElinux is in permissive mode.

I've been having a recurring problem on Slackware64 13.1. If I open VLC (or any other media player available for Slackware) before I open Firefox, then my sound works 100% and there's never any problem, however, if I open Firefox first, and there happens to be a flash video loading, then any other media player (mplayer-plugin, Amarok or VLC) will fail to play sound. VLC tells me:
Quote: Potential ALSA version problem: VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any). update alsa-lib to version 1.0.24 or higher to try to fix this issue. Now, I'm happy to do that if it will actually fix the problem, though I'll have to figure out how seeing as I'm something of a n00b. The thing is that I've not really done anything to alsa except run alsaconf on my first boot, so I'm not sure if that's really the problem I've been using Slackware64 for a few months now, I'm on my first ever install and for the most part I'm loving it. Been working through the little things that have been annoying me, and for the most part I've managed to find solutions either by reading the Slackbook, by browsing LQ or by doing a quick Google search. However, I can't seem to find any reference to this specific problem anywhere and I'm not sure what I should do.
