Debian Installation :: AMD64 Hang On Startup?

Oct 9, 2010

I've just installed Debian AMD64 on my main box (Intel Q6600, Ati HD4770, Asus P5K) using the DVD install. It boots, but hangs when it tries starting the graphical interface. No reports, no commandline, nothing at all - a nice black screen and completely unresponsive system.

Debian x86 works with no problems.

CentOS 5 :: 2 Nodes Cluster Hang At Startup?

Feb 17, 2010

I have an annoying problem with a 2 nodes cluster that I don't understand.

One of my server is totally shutdown.

When I start cman after a reboot on the other server, it hangs on "Starting fencing...". The process which is actually hanging is : /sbin/fence_tool -w -t 300 -m 45 join

When I start this program manually, I get this output :

# /sbin/fence_tool -w -t 300 -m 45 join
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
Waiting for all 2 nodes to be members
(and so on...)

What I don't understand is why the fence_tool program wait for the 2nd node to join the cluster and don't fence the other node.

Here is my cluster.conf :

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<cluster name="ctpsrv-bdd" config_version="7">
<fence_daemon clean_start="0" post_fail_delay="0" post_join_delay="20"/>
<cman expected_votes="1" two_node="1"/>

[Code]....

Would it be a good idea to edit the cman startup script and remove the "-w" option of command fence_tool join, so the command do not hang up ?

Debian Installation :: Unable To Use Grub2 In Squeeze AMD64

Feb 7, 2011

The way I usually boot Linux distros, and this has worked for every distro I have tried up to Kubuntu 10.10, was to install Grub2 on an extended partition, run "dd if=/dev/sda5 of=linux.bin bs=512 count=1", and then adding that bin file to my Windows boot.ini. What usually happens after is that I get the Grub2 menu after selecting it from the Windows Bootloader.

The problem is, with the latest Squeeze AMD64, all I get when I do this is a static cursor and the computer is frozen and I have to hit the reset button.I mounted the Linux partition with Ext2IFS (mkfs.ext3 -I128 /dev/sda5 to get 128KB inodes), and I can see that the Squeeze installer did indeed install Grub2, because I can see the files in their respective directories.

Debian Installation :: No Mouse And Keyboard In Stretch Amd64 Installer

Oct 25, 2015

I have Asus Z87-PRO motherboard with i5-4670k and I'm trying to install Debian Testing with 64-bit architecture. My problem is mouse and keyboard (I guess USB in general) stop working after installer get loaded (the last thing I do is choose between text and graphical install). I found a few topics on different forums indicating that I should enable IOMMU (Intel VT-d) option in my bios.

The problem is that Intel k-series processors didn't use to have IOMMU support, so there's nothing I can do about it. I tried changing different bios options like disabling UEFI, enabling xHCI and EHCI with no luck. Passing "iommu=off" or "iommu=soft" to the boot command also doesn't work. However, I have LMDE 2 64-bit live cd (based on Debian Jessie) and it works fine, so I guess my problem may be related to some changes in 4.2 kernel.

Debian Installation :: Force Kernel I386 On Amd64 Hardware

Mar 25, 2011

I installed Debian Squeeze on a laptop today, with the official i386 DVD1. At the end, I was very disappointed to notice the installer automatically chose the amd64 kernel (with i386 packages ? how does that work ?). The hardware is compatible, but I'd really like to use the i386 kernel instead. Earlier, you could choose the kernel during installation ; I looked in Expert install with no luck. Where is it ?

Debian Installation :: Installer Incorrectly Installs AMD64 From I386 DVD?

Aug 4, 2011

I just installed Debian stable from the standard i386 DVD. When I booted up, I noticed that GRUB showed me that I had the amd64 version of Debian installed. However, I did not download an amd64 DVD, nor do I want that architecture installed on my system (even though my system can support it). The output from "uname -a" (which included both "amd64" and "x86_64") also seem to confirm this. However, I was able to install 32 bit packages and get them to work (gdebi wouldn't even let me do this when I had Ubuntu 32-bit).

Debian Installation :: 'Squeeze' AMD64 Installer Fails To Detect Hard Disk

Apr 20, 2011

Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system.The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?

Ubuntu :: Integrated Card Reader Doesn't Work And Causes Mouse To Hang At Startup

Nov 24, 2010

Everything worked fine in Kubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). On the upgrade to 10.10 (64-bit) it takes about a minute until I can move the mouse after startup and the integrated memory card reader doesn't work (but the green LED which used to only come on when there was a card in there is now always on). This has been discussed twice before: here (closed and solved by unplugging cardreader which I do not want to do) and here (unsolved but closed as maverick no longer in beta) dmesg (note the errer -110) follows. Let me know if I can/should include any other logs/info!

Debian Installation :: 2.6.32-5-amd64 Boot Fails - How To Make It Boot

May 27, 2011

My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.

Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

[3.816673] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to killl init!
Call trace:
get_empty_filp
panic

[code].....

Running it again I get similar stack stuff but it's a different place: [3.541816], [3.427502] And sometimes if I wait for a minute or two it will continue on further but appear to crash again. Hardware details (everything is onboard - no added cards):

G41M-S3
Intel G41 + ICH7 chipsets
CPU: LGA 775 for Intel Core 2 Extreme

[code]......

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?

Slackware :: Startup Hang After "Using /etc/random-seed To Initialize /dev/urandom"?

Feb 19, 2010

I recently tried to upgrade from 2.6.23 to 2.6.32 but kept on getting VFS errors. I had overwritten the old 2.6.23 kernel so there was no going back. Luckily,I had the 2.4.31 kernel still in the /boot directory.

Anyway, I finally got some time to figure out the VFS issues and I managed to solve the VFS kernel panics. It was probably a forgotten configuration setting during the make menuconfig. Now it boots up only to hang right after the "Using /etc/random-seed to initialize /dev/urandom".

Looking at the rc.S script, the next section does the dd if=/dev/urandom of=/etc/random-seed count=1 ...

I know for a fact that it isn't that line that hangs the system. I commented out that line and it still hangs.

Strange thing is that I can boot up 2.4.31 with no problem; but with 2.6.x, I get a hang-up. I did a google and came up with something about rc.udev.new, which I don't have.

Can someone point out to me what is executed right after/etc/rc.d/rc.S? Or maybe point out where it might
be hanging? (To be honest, it's either a hang up or a process that's taking an extraordinary long time to
run.)

Debian :: Cross Grading From I386 To Amd64

Jan 16, 2016

I'm using my Debian installation for a long time (~10 years) and my system is evolved to fit my tastes, usage habits and hardware setup. However, this system started on 32bit hardware and It's having some major limitations (both performance and coping with the hardware) on a 64bit system with 16GB RAM.

I've read the cross grading manuals on the network and they don't feel like firmly tested and the best ways to do it. I'm perfectly capable of anything, minimum downtime is essential since this is my primary workstation and I need it for many daily (light and heavy) tasks.
