Slackware :: Make "vga = Normal" Default In 13.37?

May 22, 2011

I have always chosen "vga = normal" in my lilo.conf file so that I can see what is on the screen when I am in runlevel 1 or 3.

Having just upgraded to 13.37 on my laptop, I suddenly find that this "default" is being overridden somewhere and the typing on the screen is half its default size (80 x 25). Luckily, this hasn't extended to the typing I see when I run a console program like "terminal" (although the font appears a little more "fragile").

Is there a way I can make "vga = normal" the default in 13.37?

Slackware :: Current Make Trackpad Scroll Normal ?

Apr 17, 2011

So I've installed a slightly earlier version of -current than is out now and installed the 2.6.38.2-smp kernel on my Asus eeePC. Normally (both on this computer and every other laptop I've used, other than Macs) you scroll by swiping one finger up/down the right side of the trackpad. This installation, however, has made the scroll similar to the Mac scroll (two fingers anywhere on the trackpad, swiping up or down). How do I change it back? I have no xorg.conf file

Ubuntu Installation :: Get UNR 10.4 To Default To FailsafeX In Normal Mode?

Aug 15, 2010

I've installed UNR 10.04 on an old UMPC. Graphics are a total mess, even console text doesn't display properly. All I get is a bunch of pixels, smeared across the screen. I'd blame KMS, but that's only supposed to affect X. Anyway, according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting/, "KMS is enabled by default for the -intel, -ati, and -nouveau drivers. It is not available for any other drivers". Mine isn't any of those, so KMS shouldn't be enabled at all. I've found that failsafeX in a recovery console works OK. My question is, how can I get UNR 10.4 to default to failsafeX in normal mode?

Networking :: Normal Default Gateway Reappears With OpenVPN Redirect

Apr 22, 2009

I'm using OpenWRT on a WRT54GS. I'm using wifidog in combination with openvpn. For those of you familiar with wifidog, my auth server is located at the other end of an openvpn tunnel and the "wifi dog gateway" is running on the WRT itself. I'm don't really think that wifi dog is the issue. Basically, I'm using openvpn with the "redirect-gateway" option which works well. In this mode, openvpn removes my current default gateway setting and adds the remote openvpn server as the default gateway (as it should). However, overnight, my default gateway on the local network keeps reapperaing (along with the openvpn one as well).

This causes confusion and I don't want any packets (But ovbiously the connection to the actual openvpn server) to go down this local gateway. Why do you think it reappears? Do you reckon openvpn is dropping connection and somehow the normal gateway is being added back? I *could* run a cron script which runs every minute or so with something like "route del default gw xx.xx.xx.xx" (where xx.xx.xx.xx is the default gateway which I don't want to be there) but that is quite messy and means that if I were to ever move the router I would need to reconfigure this and considering that I would like in the future to have many of these wifi dog gateways, this really isn't an ideal option (as every network will have a different default gateway).

Fedora :: Screen Capture Software Shutter And System's Default Take Screenshot Do Not Function Normal

Apr 7, 2011

My screen capture software, shutter and system's default "take screenshot", do not function normal any more. It can only capture the desktop wallpaper, not any other elements on the desktop, nor any other opened windows. It's just like taking an x-ray picture by passing all the other objects/elements/running programs on top of the desktop wallpaper. Any ideas? I am using Fedora 14 64 bit. The screen capture software were working fine, though.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Headphone Sound Too Loud - Can't Control It / Make It Normal?

Aug 16, 2010

I have a laptop DELL Latitude D600. The sounds works great and I can control it with the laptop buttons (increase/decrease/mute volume).

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. In prior versions, I could control independently the volume for the speakers and for the headphones. And I was able to "join" them together so that when I increase the volume, it increases in both.

Now in 10.04 I can't find where to join them. But that's fine. The problem I have now is that the volume for the headphones seems to be a 10x multiplier of the "master" volume. For example, in order to hear "normal" on the headphones, the master volume has to be almost on mute. If I increase to 1/4 of the way out, the sound is too loud for a human being.

I went to alsamixer to see what's going on and started with everything at 0.

So I put my mouse on top of the volume control on the taskbar and with one "click" on the wheel (to increase volume) I get this code...

That's just one 'click' of the wheel... and the volume control shows almost nothing on the volume bar (the tooltip says Output: 5% -75.70 dB.

In the past the 5% gain in the output was proportional for the headphones. But now it's multiplied by a lot. This makes the volume control useless when using headphones. I have to go to alsamixer to adjust manually.

And to top it off, the new Ubuntu doesn't have the "old" volume control where you can see the level of each output element.

Slackware :: Intel Framebuffer In -Current Does Not Honor Vga=normal?

Mar 3, 2010

I am using the most recent -current (that fixes the libpng "ratness" described in the ChangeLog 8-) and the Intel Framebuffer setup is annoying me. I specify vga=normal in LILO and to my knowledge I am not asking Intel Framebuffer modules to load at boot (and intelfb is blacklisted).

It's annoying because it makes the text microscopic. However, the machine works great in -Current so I can't complain. Graphics work fine and so does X, it's just annoying.

This is my Sony Vaio VGN-C140G detailed here: url

I had tried previously blacklisting inteldrmfb as well (the -Current release right before the libpng fix) and that made no difference.

I found all binaries with "intel" in their name and read the manual pages but didn't find anything useful for possibly manually setting the mode back to something equivalent to vga=normal.

I am looking for a kind of update-alternatives for Slackware to set default applications. Currently the reason is I want to use "display" as the picture viewer in Midnight Commander. Display is a part of ImageMagick. "MC" keeps looking for something called "GQVIEW", which is not installed, and is now known as "Geeqie". I removed the Geeqie pkg to see if it would help MC use Display. I also added a line in .bashrc like "VIEWER=/usr/bin/display" to see if it would force the issue.

Slackware :: Can I Make KDE / Gnome Look Like Windows 7 In Slackware

Feb 26, 2010

You might be asking why would I want to this? I will tell you why. My wife. She has grown up using Windows. The jump from Windows XP to 7 wasn't as bad as I thought it would be for her. I just had to show her where things changed to for about 10-20 minutes and that was that.

I did a trial run with Ubuntu for about a month using Gnome and not her cup of tea. So now I did a search on the Internet and came up with a Gnome solution here is the link:

http://aminesoft.wordpress.com/2009/...ike-windows-7/

And a KDE link:

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show...content=104232

But both websites are oriented towards Ubuntu/Kubuntu. I am just wondering if this will work with Slackware???

My wife likes a speedy system almost as much as I do. She also like the Search field when you click on the Start menu in Windows 7, the taskbar at the bottom, the big red X in right hand corner of the windows.

I just hope I can go this route and change it to look like Windows 7. I will be very happy and so will my wife of course.

Ubuntu :: Way To Make Compiz Default

I'm running Gnome 2 on Ubuntu 11.04 (I removed Unity completely). But when I login to the system it is using the Metacity windows environment. I can get compiz working by running 'compiz --replace'. I just added that command to the 'Startup Applications' but that way seems like a cheesy workaround.
