Slackware :: Kickoff Application Launches From /usr/bin Rather Than /usr/local/bin?
May 26, 2010
Using Slackware 12.0 32-bit. KDE KDE 4.2.4.When I choose the Menu (Kickoff Application Launcher)then choose Development, and then 'Emacs' I get the version of emacs that came with the distribution.
It is at /usr/bin
In the meantime, I have installed a compiled version of emacs that is installed at /usr/local/bin.
How do I modify Slack so that the App launcher launches /usr/local/bin/emacs?
I've downloaded VideoLan (VLC) via Yast but the icon was placed in the audio folder. How do I move it to the video player folder? Also, where are additional icons stored? I run SuSE 11.2 (boxed version) with KDE.
I am using openSUSE 11.2, and i want to use configure a scanner app to install drivers for my scanner but it requires root previlages to do so.So Please Can Anyone tell me how can i run configure a scanner as root from the kick off application launcher.
I use TextMate on Mac OS X to develop. The files I need to edit are on a Linux machine, and I have the Linux filesystem mounted on my Mac OS X. Opening the files and saving them in TextMate is not a problem. What I want to do (from my Mac OS X) is be able to...SSH <linux>cd <folder>mate <filename>I want that to open up the file in TextMate on my Mac OS X (thus, shifting focus from my Terminal.app to TextMate.app). How can I achieve this effect?
I was trying to add a virtual PDF printer and show I installed cups-pdf. Supposedly it is supposed to list the virtual pdf printer in the System->Administration->Printing dialog when I choose Add printer. But it does not do that. All it shows is the remote printers on my file server. So, opened up a web browser and when to localhost:631 and used the cups interface to add a virtual pdf printer, but still it does not show up in the printing dialog.
I'm looking for an application which does what is commonly termed as Revision Control (RC). Here is the scenario: I have a directory holding numerous files and subdirectories, all belong to a project I work on. I routinely edit/update some files and wish to record `snapshots' of the entire directory so I can compare different revisions. Of course I can store a tarred version of the directory everytime I change something but this is immensely inefficient. So What I would like is to `upload' a snapshot into an archive file everytime I change something and then being able to `download' a snapshot later (for comparison/backup). Only I work on the project and I use a single machine so everything is local (no network connections).
My requirements are: 1. Being able to easily download/upload with one command an entire directory with all its files and subdirectories. 2. Any change to the directory induces a new version including renaming/moving files (even if their content hasn't changed) 3. The snapshot is aware of symlinks and saves them as such (and not as file they point to). 4. The files in a snapshot retain their original date when I `download' from the archive. 5. A GUI allows to easily navigate between stored snapshots and see which changes occurred.
I was wondering is there a way I can install/configure an application to /opt instead of /usr or /usr/local like many do by default? I am most interested in install .deb packages in this manner how ever I am willing to compiling things from source if need be.
I have done several attempts to build a local mirror of Salckware 13.0. There are two problems: I have to wait very long for a connection, they appear error during a connection which broke it so I have to restart. Is there any other way to build mirror? I am using Alien Bob scripts. Never before happened something like that. The connections with common web pages (google, etc) work well. Maybe I should look for some other mirror than those listed in mirror-slackware-current.sh.
I'm trying to add local sockets in my multi-threaded application in order to exchange data between threads. The only problem I got is that most of the information available on the net is related to internet oriented socket programming whileI want to perform local connections. got a thread that does the sniffing via libpcap. And I would like that thread to send each captured packet to a second thread that will analyse the packetof the thread implementations is written in separate .h file.Or maybe there is a more effective method of exchanging data between threads
I try to add program to Kickoff menu with the menu editor, make settings and click "save" to save changes. System update configuration but nothing happen. The addend program does not appear int the menu. If I close menu editor the changes are gone. It looks like that menu editor can't save my settings. What is wrong?
I delete XP totaly and now I use only Linux. In windows I was using free diction and I want to make it to run from kickoff menu(I am with KDE). The problem is that in Konsole
Code: wine ~/opt/thediction/diction.exe run the program but with that command in command line in Menu Editor it has some error with diction database and can't run. I try to use "", but with no success. What I have to do in order to run the program from kickoff menu by simply clicking it?
I've just decided to switch from Ubuntu and give this distro another go. I've not used SUSE since 9.x so we'll see what happens. I'm running Gnome anyway but when I launch Blender installed from the repositories it goes fullscreen (press F11 in firefox and that's fullscreen). This isn't the default - the default is windowed like when Firefox is maximised say.
You can run it from a terminal with the switch -w to launch it windowed but that doesn't do anything...still fullscreen. Then comes the kicker - I downloaded the alpha version of 2.5 which is a binary in a tarball and it still did it. What's going on? Why is openSUSE 11.2 forcing fullscreen mode? Any ideas because I quite like what I'm seeing in this version of openSUSE but I really need to do my 3D stuff in it and fullscreen makes things difficult when i want to multitask.
I installed 10.10 yesterday, and now whenever I boot my computer it launches 3 or 4 windows on startup for apps that usually run in the tray (Rhythmbox, Pidgin, Skype, and the mounter for my memory card). I was wondering if there is a way to just launch the programs to the tray. It worked perfectly in Lucid.
I've recently installed openSUSE again and on first boot the kickoff laucher looks like this.
I then proceed to update the system. After I have downloaded and installed all the updates from yast online update I then restart and when I boot in the kickoff laucher has lost it's transparency?
I don't have any extra repos added apart from the defaults when installed. And I'm using the Intel graphics driver. Is there perhaps a desktop effect module being turned off?
I am using 11.4 with kde4.6.0 and I have thunderbird installed, but the thunderbird does not appear under email applications in kickoff. I have set it as my default email program in settings. I can launch fro kickoff search bar, but it comes up with the gear wheel and "run thunderbird" Something is amiss
I just installed Kubuntu, but whenever I install an application or remove one, the Kickoff Menu doesn't update to reflect this. The strange thing is, I can actually click on apps I supposedly uninstalled and they still launch, for example I replaced libreoffice with openoffice, and the menu still only shows libreoffice...
I get this error when trying to access the trash icon from the kickoff menu or from the trashcan widget.BTW, I can access trash via Dolphin or Nautilus though.
I've setup two slackware in a Dell Inspiron 640m e in Acer Aspire One D150.
In my router the domain is "home", the two slack use wicd (dhcpcd backend) to connect. I can go in internet.
The problem is that in my router panel I can see the hostname (so dhcpcd send the right one) but they can't ping other machine in the lan (windows 2000, nas or other linux box).
Now I can't use a fixed ip (i change several networks with different routers).
I think I miss something that can ask to my router the hostname.
Anyway I was able to ping Dell.local and Acer.local with Ubuntu karmic.
I'm a little new to Slackware so maybe this isn't the right way to initiate vncserver on boot, but here's what I've got. The last two lines in my rc.local are:
the second line runs successfully on boot, but the first line doesn't. However, after I am logged on, I can execute /etc/rc.d/rc.local and both lines will run successfully. Does the system need to be fully logged on to start the vncserver, or should I start it elsewhere other than rc.local?
I installed gimp on my ASUS desktop and ufraw from the download center. When I go to places>home folder, or places>documents etc, instead of the usual directory browser GIMP launches and gives an error message: opening jen>documents failed; it is a directory. I un-installed GIMP, and now places>documents launches ufraw. how to keep gimp and ufraw, but maintain the link from directory to directory browser?
I am running kubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) and have installed the latest version of the Opera 10.53 beta.
My problem is that I cannot change the icon for Opera in the Kickoff menu or on the desktop. I tried right clicking on the Kickoff Application Launcher widget on the panel and choosing Menu Editor; Navigated to Opera and changed the icon from the default KDE icon (opera) to the new styled Opera icon (opera-browser), but it doesn't change.
I have a problem with my slackware 13.1 that is that i cant access it outside my local network. Its running behind a router and i have activated the DMZ to my slackware computer i can access the web with my slackware computer but i cant get access to it outside my LAN.
Having both a /usr and /usr/local partition seems logical: A seperate partition for /usr would preserve the /root partition since it changes in size, while reducing the initial install size of /root. Having a /usr/local partition would then preserve custom software (ie. scribus, bender etc.)not distro related, scripts, and settings.
Would having /usr and /usr/local create any problems locating files? I understand that /usr/local has a relative function depending on whether it is being used as a machine in a network context or whether it is being used as a desktop and /usr/local refers to user custom files. I am setting up slackware64 multilib and think I want to preserve both distro and user files to expedite do overs keep trouble shooting clean.
For some reason everytime I open nautalius or mount an external media showFoto launches, I tried looking at "Perferred Applications" but not seeing anything useful. I tried searching google and this site with a possible solution but no joy. I am using Fedora 14 with Gnome.
I'd like to create a launcher for ParaView that requires a terminal shell in order to launch. It is just a pain having to enter the couple of lines to launch it from Konsole.
cd /home/user/Document/ParaView(version)/bin ./paraview
Lemme know what you think. I'd just like to add something to the quick launch panel.
