Slackware :: Start Vncserver From Rc.local?

Mar 7, 2011

I'm a little new to Slackware so maybe this isn't the right way to initiate vncserver on boot, but here's what I've got. The last two lines in my rc.local are:

/usr/bin/vncserver :1 &
mount.cifs //192.168.1.99/shared /mnt/shared -o username='uname',password='passwd'

the second line runs successfully on boot, but the first line doesn't. However, after I am logged on, I can execute /etc/rc.d/rc.local and both lines will run successfully. Does the system need to be fully logged on to start the vncserver, or should I start it elsewhere other than rc.local?

Ubuntu :: Start A VNC Session Any Way But Vncserver?

Jul 19, 2010

I am trying to VNC into a server to which I have no physical access (but I can ask someone to start a session or something) but can ssh into. I have gotten a VNC session working by sshing in and running vncserver, although once the VNC session died in a confusing manner.

I don't know how to start a VNC session any way but vncserver, which is odd since I'm sure that Ubuntu's Remote desktop should somehow allow me to do this by default. The server by the way is being used as a desktop by someone else. Also, how do I tell if my VNC is encrypted and if it isn't how do I make sure it is?

Slackware :: Cant Shutdown Or Reboot / After Copied The Rc Script To Rc.d & Added Lines In Rc.local To Start The Script?

Oct 10, 2010

I just happen to have a glitch with my newly rebuild slackware server. This morning everything was working fine. Then having recently setup raid arrays, I decided to try MrGoblin's rc.mdadm script to monitor the raid arrays.

I copied the rc script to rc.d & added lines in rc.local to start the script, and a line in rc.6 to stop the script when shutdown or reboot.

Now, I cant reboot neither I can shutdown...

If I issue the command "shutdown -r now", Slack execute the normal shutdown or reboot steps, unmount the local FS, turn off swap, remount the rootdev as readonly, and then I see:

Code:

Mdadm monitor not running:INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel & it stalls at this point forever...

Before the machine would have rebooted after this line. What could explain this? Now I have to hard power down or reset the machine, and of course, upon rebooting I get a REISERFS warning of unclean shutdown...

Content of the rc.local:

Code:

#!/bin/sh
#
# /etc/rc.d/rc.local: Local system initialization script.
#
# Put any local startup commands in here. Also, if you have

Slackware :: Can't Make Local Mirror Of Slackware

There are two problems: I have to wait very long for a connection, they appear error during a connection which broke it so I have to restart. Is there any other way to build mirror? I am using Alien Bob scripts. Never before happened something like that. The connections with common web pages (google, etc) work well. Maybe I should look for some other mirror than those listed in mirror-slackware-current.sh.

Fedora :: Boot Stops At 'Start Service Local'

Feb 13, 2011

I performed the first update in 4 months to my Fedora 12 Constantine. I also removed a 'dial-up' package (figured i didnt need it) and the KDE package after the update. Firefox was not getting a connection to the internet at this point. The network view showed the ethernet as inactive. Everything besides Firefox appears to work fine.

I restart machine.

It boots until right after the fedora logo fills up. At this point my dual monitors go to sleep. No response from anything. When I start in interactive mode I hit y for everything. Everything works great until libvirtd, libvirt-guest, and local. After y on all three nothing happens. I can type on the screen but no response. It just sits there. I can boot into text mode and do whatever I want. What can I do? What other information do I need to move forward?

I have looked at the Xorg.0.?? i forget what its called. I am not versed in reading the messages in it. Same for the other logs I looked at.

Slackware :: Can't Ping Any Local Hostname

Feb 20, 2010

I've setup two slackware in a Dell Inspiron 640m e in Acer Aspire One D150.

In my router the domain is "home", the two slack use wicd (dhcpcd backend) to connect. I can go in internet.

The problem is that in my router panel I can see the hostname (so dhcpcd send the right one) but they can't ping other machine in the lan (windows 2000, nas or other linux box).

Now I can't use a fixed ip (i change several networks with different routers).

I think I miss something that can ask to my router the hostname.

Anyway I was able to ping Dell.local and Acer.local with Ubuntu karmic.

Ubuntu Servers :: Auto Run Tasks On System Start With Rc.local Not Working / Fix It?

I am currently running a VPS with Ubuntu Server 10.10. I have been trying for a few days now to get some programs to run when the system starts, but with no luck. I am trying to use rc.local to do this, there is an:
/etc/init.d/rc.local - http://paste.monsterprojects.org/mpbjhwhbjzhbjrr (Was already on the system, I have not edited this)
and:
/etc/rc.local - http://paste.monsterprojects.org/mpbjhwhbkkkhwez

If i run the /etc/rc.local script manually all the programs start fine, and if i run /etc/init.d/rc.local start, all the programs start fine. But for some reason they just don't seem to be starting when the system boots.

Slackware :: Pros And Cons To Having Both /usr And /usr/local Partitions?

Jun 1, 2010

Having both a /usr and /usr/local partition seems logical: A seperate partition for /usr would preserve the /root partition since it changes in size, while reducing the initial install size of /root. Having a /usr/local partition would then preserve custom software (ie. scribus, bender etc.)not distro related, scripts, and settings.

Would having /usr and /usr/local create any problems locating files? I understand that /usr/local has a relative function depending on whether it is being used as a machine in a network context or whether it is being used as a desktop and /usr/local refers to user custom files. I am setting up slackware64 multilib and think I want to preserve both distro and user files to expedite do overs keep trouble shooting clean.

Debian :: Make Vncserver Starts On Boot ?

Feb 25, 2011

Hi all,

how can I make vncserver starts on boot?
Realvnc was installed by "apt-get install vnc-server" command.
There in NO start-stop script in /etc/init.d/ (is it ok? ), so I can't use update-rc.d. When placing
vncserver
or
/bin/bash -c "cd /root/ && vncserver :1" 2> /tmp/vncstart &
in rc.local it starts nothing but "vncpasswd //.vnc/passwd" (and YES, there is password in /root/.vnc/passwd)

Please, help!

My end goal is to have the machine boot and start the vncserver automatically, eventually using an ssh tunnel to make it secure. My main problem is the vncserver is not starting on boot, I must login as a user then it works great. the error I get is

[Code]....

Basically what happens is the vncserver fails on boot however, if I login to the Fedora box I am able to connect and I get the GDM login screen. I have read many, many posts but have not been able to get over the boot issue. I really want to make this a headless box I can put in another room so I have more room for my musical gear.
