Jun 22, 2010When I login, all I get is a terminal in the upper left-hand corner of the screen with the wallpaper in the background.
I uninstalled what I thought were random orphaned packages relating to evolution (evolution-data-common, etc..) Turns out that this uninstalls gnome-panel as well, although it didn't warn me. Reinstall gnome-panel and it will reinstall the required packages (you can still run synaptic from terminal!)

Nov 3, 2010I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

Jul 16, 2011I've recently installed openSUSE again and on first boot the kickoff laucher looks like this.
I then proceed to update the system. After I have downloaded and installed all the updates from yast online update I then restart and when I boot in the kickoff laucher has lost it's transparency?
I don't have any extra repos added apart from the defaults when installed. And I'm using the Intel graphics driver. Is there perhaps a desktop effect module being turned off?
OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Login Under An Username
Apr 25, 2010Been using 11.2 for a couple of months now, mostly I've solved my own problems or read from some preexisting already solved problems on threads like these. But, I'm not even sure where to start with this one. I cannot login under my main username, the account is set to autologin, and I get the login screen instead. When I attempt to login I get a black screen for about a second then it bumps me back to the login screen, no error messages. I'm able to login under runlevel 3, but as soon as I try to "init 5" it bumps me out and back to the login screen.
Root account works fine, and I used it to create a secondary account from which I am posting from right now. The behavior started after the system put the display to sleep while I was watching a movie in VLC, I woke it up just as it turned completely black, it hung there and I was forced to hard reboot. Had the problem ever since (for several hours now, lol).
I use Gnome but I installed KDE to see if it would resolve my problem, but no dice.
Ubuntu :: Natty Kickoff Menu Does Not Reflect New App Install
May 6, 2011I just installed Kubuntu, but whenever I install an application or remove one, the Kickoff Menu doesn't update to reflect this. The strange thing is, I can actually click on apps I supposedly uninstalled and they still launch, for example I replaced libreoffice with openoffice, and the menu still only shows libreoffice...

Jun 2, 2010I know how to go through KDE settings to "hide" a user from the login screen but I want to know where KDM is getting this info from. I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 x64, configured it the way I like, and now I would like to clone it. Problem is that I logged into my own account while testing FreeNX and now my username shows up on the login screen. I want to remove any information that I logged into this system with an account other than root. I've Googled many times and still have no idea. I currently have two local users, root and user. The rest of my users authenticate and login via LDAP. The name of my LDAP user account is now always displayed on the KDM login screen. I don't want to disable the user list either, I just want to remove my account from the list before I clone the machine.

Feb 10, 2010Sometimes I get this weird thing where typing a name into the kickoff menu hangs after a few letters. It hangs the entire computer! Once it happens, I try to close it but have to wait about 20 seconds before I can do anything on the computer. Then everything else works fine (after it's closed). But if I go back to kickoff and try again, it does the same thing! I can't seem to find anything in "top" to indicate what's happening.

OpenSUSE Install :: Username Order On Login Screen In 11.2?
Dec 2, 2009I just moved from openSUSE 11.0 to 11.2.
While I like to new login screen (I was using a face based theme previously), I am stumped on how to control the order that the user names are presented.
As best I can tell, they are presented in the order who logs in most frequently. While that makes a certain amount of sense, I would like to be able to force the list to remain alphabetical.
Is there any way to control this, and if so, where?
OpenSUSE Install :: Pam_ldap Username Case Sensitivity On 11.2
Sep 8, 2010It seems pam_ldap in 11.2 is not case insensitive anymore when it comes to checking usernames with uid from ldap.It is working fine on 11.1 though (both systems with latest updates up to now)(I didn't try 11.3 yet)On our ldap server (which is out of my control), the usernames are not unified, some are all in lowercase and some are capitalized, but on our Linux servers we have all usernames in lowercase.
Since our upgrade to 11.2, the users that their uid on ldap server does not match exactly to the username on Linux servers can not login anymore. Is there any option to change this behavior and force pam_ldap to be case-insensitive or convert uid/usernames to lowercase?
or all of a sudden pam_ldap decided to become case sensitive!?

May 27, 2010People usually suggest workarounds to do this, as it's not possible with usermod while the user is logged in. Did I overlook anything or is this method not preferable over creating a new account, setting the user permissions, then moving the files and messing with the file permissions? Using the right tool for the job would seem to be less error-prone to me. 1. Activate the root account by setting a password.

2. Log out and log into the root account.
3. Change the username and home directory from user1 to user2. This will also move the files to the new home directory and rename the group to user2.

Mar 22, 2011I just burned the iso of openSUSe 11.4 onto a dvd, and I make it through all of the installation. At the end it reboots the computer and starts in the kernel/command line or whatever you call it. I think it's kernel. Anyway, it asks for my username and password and then it says like "have fun.." () or something and then just has like my directory or whatever waiting for commands. Is there some command to start up the OS?

I had installed VirtualBox through Yast and decoded to delete. After deleting the /boot directory looked like this, pointing now to the desktop kernel.
I went into YAST and deleted all kernel entries that contained desktop, trying to get back to the original configuration.
After doing this, the /boot directory now looks like this.
Is there any way to get back to the original kernel configuration without having to do a complete installation?

Nov 22, 2010I tried a LIVECD from Artistx: ArtistX - eXtra ordinary art tools Index of /mirrors/artistx And now my computer boots up into a kernel command line screen instead of the GUI type screen where I enter my name and password. Anyone know what this ##$%@ disk changed on my computer and how do I get it back to normal? Fail safe mode boots ok. On the LIVECD disk I selected boot from hard drive which worked but after I turn off my computer and restart, it goes back into that command line sign in screen and stays there.

Feb 9, 2010I installed Fedora 12 a couple of days ago. This is my secondary operating system. The main one is Mint 8 and in order to have the same documents in both OSs I have a separate /home partition, but for some reason I don't see any of my Documents. In the installation I told fedora that I already had a /home partition and to use it. Also if I mount Mint's disk, while I can browse the folders, I can't see any document .
Finally I can access my Mint's home folder and files but since my username in fedora has a capital A it created another home folder. How can I change my home folder path so it point to the other home folder?

OpSys: Ubuntu 10.4 (64Bit)
Short Description: I wanted to see what would happen if I upgraded from Kubuntu 8.04 (32bit) to Ubuntu 10.4 (64bit) by copying my home directory then restoring it after the upgrade. It almost worked sans a few interesting problems that I'm hoping might teach me a bit more about how Ubuntu works.
Detailed Description:
1. I copied my home directory to another hard disk.
2. I let the installation disk for Ubuntu 10.4 (64bit) reformat and overwrite the disk that contained Kubuntu 8.04 (32bit) and chose to maintain the partition and swap size for that disk.
3. Once I worked out some bugs in the hardware and got the OS up and running smoothly, I "merged" my home directory with the backup I had created in step one. (Merge was an option given to me when I was attempting to paste the files copied from the backup disk.)
4. It should also be noted that I was trying for a while last night to install TrueCrypt. In order to do that I had to check its "sig" file. The GUI for the gpg installation was complaining that I didn't have gtk+-2.0 installed so I installed gtk (I think it might have been 2.4 or whatever the most recent one was) from source without any errors. It got late so I gave up on attempting to install TrueCrypt any further.
The Results: This morning the computer seemed to boot faster than it had been before, but I was left without a functioning Theme manager. It will open, and I can click on all of its features, but nothing seems to do anything. For example: If I right click on the desktop and choose "Change Desktop Background" Then select "Get more themes online", nothing happens. Also if I select the "theme" tab, there are only two themes listed when there used to be about 9 by default.
Questions: 1.) Is there a way to restore the files that are important for correct system operation (possibly all the files starting with a dot ".*") in my home directory to there default state like they would have been from a fresh install, but without doing a fresh install and without loosing any of the documents or archives in my home file?
2.) Is this even the correct approach or might this cause more problems? For example, if your computer had this problem would you try and restore the home directory, or would you troubleshoot each problem as it arises one at a time until everything became stable?
3.) What could I do next to continue troubleshooting the theme manager?
I'll keep researching and trying to find some links that can help while I wait for your responses. If I find anything that helps I'll post the fix here.
General :: Creating A Link To A Deeply Nested Folder Like = /home/username/?
Sep 17, 2009I have an external hard drive mounted at /media/exthdd/ On that hard drive I have folders: Music, Pictures, Videos, etc. Can I make symbolic links to /media/exthdd/Music/ to say the root directory /_ ? the directory /_ is empty I just want a quick method of typing to get me there much like [cd ~] gets me to my home/username folder. I have my music organized by Artist/Year-Album/Track.Title.mp3 I want to be able to "cd /_" then "ls" and see all Artist folders.

May 23, 2010I did a clean install from Ubuntu 09.04 to 10.04 and restored my files from tar.
Everything worked fine until I tried my weekly rsync backup.
The permissions seemed to be causing problems, so I recursively changed all the permissions in my home directory:

after this i cannot boot says cannot boot ,nautilus cant find home folder etc &more after doing alt-ctrl-f1 and doing login i can find my old home folder with all inside the point is how i can change to my old home folder -have to find the solution in order not to do format again i use ubuntu desktop edition on an acer aspire one netbook with ssd 8gb -

Ubuntu :: Home Icon In Unity Launcher Has Changed / What's Going On?
Jun 9, 2011I switched on my machine this evening and the first thing I noticed was the home icon in the unity launcher has changed, then I noted then I noted that the window switcher icon, power-off icon and me icon in top right are also different.
On starting nautilus (clicking on home icon) it looks more like thunar (although about says its not). A screen shot showing "nautilus-thunar" and the desktop is attached.
Firefox's minimize, maximize and close icons have also changed - see other screen shot.
Anyone got any idea what's going on? Anyone else have this.

Dec 21, 2010how I managed this, but somehow during a reinstall I changed the ownership of all my home stuff to root, instead of my normal username. So now nothing loads, unless I sudo it. I had to use sudo just to open firefox.
