Slackware :: Keyboard Not Working Unless Charger Plugged In
May 22, 2010
Slackware 13.0, dell vostro 1320. When I start up the laptop without the ac charger plugged in the keyboard doesn't work. This is the case when booting into runlevel 3 and 4. Then after restarting 3 or 4 times and getting sick of it, i plug the charger in, restart, get to the login screen and confirm that the keyboard works, unplug the charger and it's all good. I ssh into the laptop when the keyboard is not working and restart hald but it doesn't help. Btw, tried ubuntu and the problem wasn't there.

I have upgraded my laptop to 10.04 while having my usb-keyboard plugged in.f I boot the laptop without a plugged in keyboard, the laptop keyboard is not working. It starts working as soon as I plug a usb-keyboard in though.Quite annoying if I take my laptop with me and the first thing after booting is to find a usb-keyboard to plug in Does anyone know where can I reconfigure this? [edit]I just found out, that the laptop keyboar seems to be in numlock mode... meaning that the keys [j,k,l] is mapped to [1,2,3] etc

When I plug the webcam in (usb), the led starts to shine, indicating that it is filming. When I use a program (XSane for example) and click the 'scan' button, the led turns off! It seems that the cam works when it shouldn't, and vice versa.

I'm running XFCE on slackware64-current. I've had this problem for a number of months now. Every so often, XFCE will decide to not recognize key combinations that are mapped to keyboard shortcuts. For example, hitting ALT+F2 will not bring up the xfrun4 dialog box. This happens to all of my keyboard shortcuts (e.g., volume keys).
For now, I've resorted to going into the keyboard shortcut settings and double-clicking on each assignment and then hitting ok. This seems to correct whatever corruption is occurring. What's even more unusual is that all of the settings appear to be intact in the settings box and even in the .xml file.

I'm installing slack 13.0 in a Dell 2350 for a friend. once installed, it works ok for a while then within some somewhat random period of time, just plain locks up. the keyboard stops working, the mouse cursor still moves, but there is no response from mouse clicks. i was ssh'ed into the machine one of these times to see if i could read the logs during a lockup. the machine stopped responding to the ssh session as well (actually i had an instance of mc running at the time, and the machine still responded to it. when i exited mc, i was stuck in console never-never land). the logs show absolutely nothing. /etc/messages keeps showing MARK long after the lockup. all other logs are not updated since boot. this machine has an i810 chipset, is there a driver issue here?

I (finally!) have Mythtv working under 10.04. I use the Haupaugge DVB-T card with its remote. Whilst setting up the kit this worked OK. When I unplugged the keyboard and mouse the system prior to installing it next to the TV appeared to have stopped responding to the remote. In fact it seems to be responding to a number of the remote keys but not the OK and Go keys which isn't enough to run Mythtv.
I don't think leaving a keyboard & mouse plugged in is going to be domestically acceptable.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how to restore lirc functionality?

When I plug in a USB GPS device, using cypress_m8 module, is creates /dev/ttyUSB0 with read/write permissions for owner, root, and group, dialout. My question is really just where are the rules for setting these permissions and how exactly are the owner and group names set when /dev/ttyUSB0 is created, i.e. a serial USB device is plugged in.

I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

I have an old lap top thats in good nick and I installed 10.10 on it. I had only used 10.9 before on my other old and rubbish acer. On 10.10 I have a problem where when I unplug the charger the computer boots down instantly. However, unlike all the treads I have seen, my computer can be re-started and run off battery for hours with no problem. I have mentioned this just now on the hardware thread but I don't see how its a hardware problem so I thought I should put it here.I also have a problem with the wireless/Internet becoming disabled after it goes to sleep. Only way to solve it is to restart it. I have checked the options in my inexpert way but have found no command to provoke such behavior. Has anyone tried re-booting when their "battery dies" after charger removed?

I am having a rather odd issue, this week I installed Debian latest on to an old Acer Aspire 3810TZ; everything runs smoothly enough and I spent a good number of hours using the laptop on battery (about two or three, the battery is checked and in good enough condition given its age) then as the desktop widget reported the battery as being 22% or so full I decided to plug in the charger at which point the os reported the battery as being 0% and issued an immediate hibernation.
I have done a fair bit of searching for others whom have had the same problem, as I am sure its not a new one. But the majority of what I have read revolves around batteries not charging and mine certainly does, I just have to have the laptop switched off while I do so (unless its booted into windows, in which case its fine.)
Below is the output of acpi and upower.
Code: Select allsimon@DLC:~$ acpi -b
Battery 0: Discharging, 96%, 05:47:01 remaining
simon@DLC:~$ upower -d
Device: /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/line_power_ADP1
native-path: ADP1
power supply: yes
[Code] ....
I am using the Cinnamon desktop environment ...

I've been using Slackware for ages... since like 1997 or 1998. I have a Slackware 3.x CD around here somewhere. I'm usually the one explaining how Linux works to everyone else. I even got GnuCash working on Slackware. So these two problems ...
1. Keyboard in Xorg. It seems to work, except the down arrow and the page down buttons are mapped as something else (the down arrow causes TEXT TO DISAPPEAR...I've had to type this like three times now...). After a bunch of searches, it looks like a problem with HAL and evdev (whatever that is). I tried setting the model in KDE's Regional control panel but that had no effect.
Xorg.conf settings for this section... you can see some remnants from prior attempts:
I did check that event1 refers to the keyboard. The keyboard is a Microsoft Internet Keyboard that works fine; the arrow keys work great outside of X.
2. Mouse in Xorg. The scroll wheel wants to scroll side to side instead of up and down. This also happens to be a Microsoft product (I like their mice... my wife brought the Microsoft keyboard into the relationship...). It's just a wheel optical 3-button mouse, nothing special. Again, none of my usual xorg.conf edits seem to work; here's what I have right now.
Again, I checked that the mouse is event2.
Someone really should make an upgrade guide for people like me that have been using it for years and aren't really following the tech that explains new features like hal and evdev (I know hal has been around for a couple versions, but I've never gotten involved with it until now). Or maybe there is one and I'm just not aware of it. Basically I just want it to just work, which is why I use Slackware in the first place!
I should mention I did have both working under Slackware 13.1 on this machine until Windows conveniently erased my root partition for me, so I got to do a completely clean Slackware install for the first time in a LONG time. That's when the issue arose. Because I was in a rush, I did a full install. I assume the previous setup was using non-hal/non-evdev methods, but I might as well set this one up using the new methods, right?
I'm using Slackware64 13.1, running on a Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.50 GHz. Hardware is fine - both mouse and keyboard work under Windows XP, and like I said the keyboard is fine outside X. It has to be some configuration problem ...somewhere.

I'm trying to bring my Slackware system back to life as my XP HDD is dying... I've got everything working except for my audio. I got a new motherboard (ASRock P43DE3) and it has a VIA VT1708S as the onboard audio. Is there any way I can get this working without rebuilding the kernel?

I recently bought the Alfa AWUS036h which uses the Realtek rtl8187 chipset. I am able to load the module and connect to any network, but its almost as soon as I try to load a page the connection drops. It never stays connected for more than 30 seconds. My other computers using the same adapter in the same spot work fine, unfortunately there not running slackware. I've tried compiling the newest stable kernel and checked the rd.inet1.conf settings.

The mouse, gpm, and the keyboard work alright at the black screen but in the graphical thing, forget its name.....Xsomething, not KDE, there is no mouse or keyboard; for example the screensaver just goes on and on and nothing will stop it.

The problem is that the keyboard only works in Xfce or in Kde, in my system Slackware64 13.1.
What should I do to have it working in all window managers that come along the distribution?

Symptoms
- PS/2 mouse works fine under gpm
- PS/2 Keyboard works in console terminal
- Neither Mouse nor Keyboard works under kdm or xdm
- And: #ps aux | grep hal
shows:

/usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes --use-syslog
but does not show anything like:
root 4298 0.0 0.1 3300 544 ? S Mar10 0:00
hald-addon-input: Listening on /dev/input/event1
- And syslog show: when starting hald with --verbose=yes --use-syslog

: Error running 'hald-addon-keyboard':
org.freedesktop.HalRunner.Failed: Start request failed
- You will find that deleting:
/var/cache/hald/fdi-cache
(and of course: /etc/rc.d/rc.hald restart)
- will allow hald to start the correct module:
/usr/libexec/hald-addon-input
- instead of trying to start a non-existant file:
/usr/libexec/hald-addon-keyboard
My theory is that since hald is the same version in 12.2 and 13.0, had believed that the cache file held valid information, when in fact it did not. I did not think to check the modification date before deleting the file.

When I go to boot up, I ususally have a failedattempt or two at logging in, because my autorepeat rate on the keyboard will often give me morethan one character when I depress a key. SoI put my password in wrong and get a failed attempt. After I log in I usually run:kbdrate -r 6 -d 500This gets my autorepeat rate down to 6 char per secondand delay time to 500 to where I can actually use the keyboard. Is there some place I can run those commands duringboot, so that I don't have the failed and repeated

Running Slackware 12.0 (2.6.29.4), performed an entire package update via slapt-get --upgrade, after the upgrade keyboard is not recognizing every keystroke. I have searched the forums for similar issues, but due to the broad verbiage as to how to describe the problem, I have yet to find a solution.
I'd prefer not to have to upgrade to Slackware 13.0 or my kernel. Prior to performing upgrade, keyboard was working as expected. This really puts a damper on things, I type very fast and use the terminal 75% of the time. Having to backspace and retype is getting annoying.
Please, if anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions. Thanks.
