Slackware :: Keyboard Not Recognizing Every Keystroke In X And Run-level 5

Oct 17, 2010

Running Slackware 12.0 (2.6.29.4), performed an entire package update via slapt-get --upgrade, after the upgrade keyboard is not recognizing every keystroke. I have searched the forums for similar issues, but due to the broad verbiage as to how to describe the problem, I have yet to find a solution.

I'd prefer not to have to upgrade to Slackware 13.0 or my kernel. Prior to performing upgrade, keyboard was working as expected. This really puts a damper on things, I type very fast and use the terminal 75% of the time. Having to backspace and retype is getting annoying.

Please, if anyone has any ideas, I am open to suggestions. Thanks.

Ubuntu :: Bluetooth Keyboard Disconnects On Keystroke?

Sep 18, 2010

I have two machines one Ubuntu Lucid and one Kubuntu Lucid. They share a bluetooth keyboard through a KVM switch. As of last week both were working. At this point my KDE machine disconnects from the keyboard on the first keystroke. The Ubuntu machine is still okay. What I've tried/checked so far without success

I can connect my keyboard through Kbluetooth but it disconnects when I start typing. The timeout time is set to none. I tried rebooting and then reinstalling the software to no avail. I replaced the batteries in the keyboard. Plugging the bluetooth usb adapter directly into the KDE box. Removing and then adding the trust I find this in the syslog:

2010-09-18 12:09:42 godel bluetoothd[1911] link_key_request (sba=00:1BC:0F:F1:E7, dba=00:22:48:87:B3:49)

Here's the kbluetoothrc from my home folder

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 X Gui Is Not Recognizing Keyboard And Mouse

Dec 27, 2009

I have just update from 11.1 to 11.2 and after reboot system hangs when arrives to the screen where all users logins are showed. I run the installation again in repair mode. Everything correct. Started system again in Level 3, login as one of the users and run startx. It starts the desktop but no keyboard or mouse is working. Started system again in level 3, login as root, started gdm and same results. It arrives to the login screen for the different users and keyboard and mouse does not work. System seems to be running as clock in the right down works.

Started system again in Level 3, login as root, run SaX2 and same results: no keyboard no mouse. I am running gnome desktop with last image downloaded openSUSE-11.2-DVD-i586.iso. it seems to be something related to bug in OpenSuse 11.2 Milestone 7: (Bugs:Most Annoying Bugs 11.2 dev - openSUSE) HAL may crash, leaving XOrg without keyboard and mouse (Bug #537452), work-around: update with 'hal' package from Base:System

Debian Installation :: Wheezy Installer Not Recognizing USB Keyboard

Jul 6, 2011

I am using Wheezy netinstall on a USB stick. The machine has an Intel DH57JG motherboard, USB keyboard, and no optical drive. The installer loads to the initial screen OK, but the keyboard is not active. This problem has been reported for several years and was supposed to be fixed by kernel 2.6.32, yet here it is. What can I do?

One suggestion has been to disable/enable USB legacy support in the BIOS. It is enabled by default. If I disable it, the installer doesn't load. This keyboard works fine on other Linux machines and on the BIOS in this machine. I read there was a problem with Cherry keyboards and the Squeeze installer. This keyboard is not a Cherry but does have Cherry keyswitches.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Restrict Other Programs From Recognizing Keyboard

Mar 3, 2011

Every time I look at firefox (i.e. bring it to the foreground), and when I go back to programs like terminal, GVIM, or pidgin, they won't recognize my keyboard unless I click on some specific thing. For example, I have to click the top of GVIM and pidgin and drag it around a bit, then I can type in those programs. For terminal I have to switch to a different tab and switch back before I can do anything. For some other programs, simply pressing "control-z" to undo will make the program not recognize the keyboard until some action with the mouse is done. This started to happen a few days ago after I tried to install scim to type Chinese (may or may not have any thing to do with it).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Keyboard - Key To Choose 3rd Level Does Not Work

Dec 17, 2009

I don't get it, it worked on openSUSE 11.0 (I use 11.2 now, with Gnome environment). Same story on my laptop keyboard and the external USB Trust keyboard. It doesn't make any difference if I use any other layout: Serbian latin, Serbian cyrilic, USA, Croatian, Bosnian. Also it doesn't make any difference if I use alt, win, or the ctrl key for that. I need healthy keyboard. One strange thing, on one flash site (gojira-music), it does actually work in some way, with strange signs between, take a look: @ .

Being the person I am I have altered the Caps lock key so that it functions as an extra backspace button. My question is how can I use the shift key instead or at least map my right shift key to be Caps lock? I'd prefer not changing my shift keys but will remap the right one via some dubious script if need be.

Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.

I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.

Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

OpenSUSE :: Move Transparently Between Run Level 3 And Run Level 5 As Autologin User?

Aug 10, 2010

I've been able to kludge a kill script which finds the correct pid for the kdeserver (or gnome server) after my system comes up in run level 5 so I can drop back to run level 3 mode. Lots of experimentation showed me that using telinit 3 and telinit 5 would occasionally leave the video memory in a mess and I would have the black screen of death.

I set the security parameter setting to autologin for me since I am the only user of my machine, but I still have to kludge the default setting under sysconfig (the DEFAULT_WM) under Window Manager to pick a certain window manager, so it takes time to manually switch the desktop.

Right now I can leave the gui and drop back to cli, but painful experimenting showed me that killing the X server is a no no. Right now I kill the kde server, which sends the SIGTERM to the X windows manager, which then figures out that it has to shut down.

Questions: Is there a better way of doing this? Apparently openSUSE figures that we have multiple users logging into the gui desktop, so the gui is always kept running and a login window with the desktop manager option forces the user to login in. With autologin, this never happens, but no choice of desktop is possible on the fly.

Can some type of script be set up to painlessly enable this to happen? And what is the best way of bringing either the Gnome or KDE desktop manager down gracefully? I do get lots of error messages as the system attempts to recover and X shuts down. It appears that apparently the single user with autologin is left out in the cold.

General :: Get A Mouse Event To Cause Keystroke?

Mar 14, 2010

I have a Logitech Media Play mouse with many buttons. I'm using xbindkeys to create some shortcuts to programs e.g. firefox, gnome-terminal--these work wonderful. What I cannot figure out is how to get the buttons to work for the media player(Ubuntu>System>Keyboard Shortcuts>Sound). I set shortcuts using my win key and letters, hoping to use xbindkeys to send out a keystroke. I have tried to use xmacro but to no avail. xdotool was not helpful, I think it may be outdated(desktop/workspace functions did not work).

My preferred option would be to get mouse events to keystrokes working with xbindkeys and program x(x being whatever works); however, just getting my media buttons to interact with the media play is my ultimate goal.

Ubuntu :: Display A Clock (applet?) With Keystroke?

Sep 22, 2010

I'm trying to do something a little crazy with my netbook, and I'm looking for some sage advice. Since I'm trying to maximize free screen space on my 10" netbook, I have top and bottom the panels auto-hide. No problems there, and since I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts (some default, some custom) I don't even use the touchpad unless I absolutely have to. My most common apps are shortcutted, and I've got Alt-F2 for everything else. However, by hiding the top panel, I don't have a clock on the screen. This is fine in essence, but when I want to know the time, I have to mouse up to the top of the screen. Not horrible, but it goes against my nature!

So my question is: Is there any way to make holding a key/combo display the time, then have it disappear when the key is released? I would love for this to happen when I hold the windoze key, as it is currently unused.

(btw, my windoze key will soon be an Ubuntu key, the good people at System76 and their free sticker set:[URL]... I know how to add custom keyboard shortcuts, but other than launching a clock app, I have no idea how to make this happen, or if it's even possible.

Fedora :: Can't Switch To TTY Or Run Level 3 From Run Level 5

May 12, 2009

Hi Guys,
here is my scenario:

I am running F10 x86_64 with Nvidia Quadro FX 3400.
I installed the drivers and it worked just fine. No errors generated according to Nvidia log files.
However, while in run level 5 when I try to switch to run level 3 by typing "telinit 3" or "init 3" the X server goes down and I get a blank screen. Same thing happens when I try to switch to a different tty session by <ctrl>+<alt>+F2 (or any F key for that matter).
I also noticed that when I shut down my system I can't see any more the screen where services are shutting down and their status ([OK] or [failed]).

Would appreciate your help on solving this issue.

Slackware :: Mkisofs -iso-level 1 Converts To Lower Case Instead Of Upper Case?

Oct 28, 2010

Kernel 2.6, Slackware 12.0
mkisofs 2.01

I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.

Quote:

-iso-level level
.........................
With all iso9660 levels from 1..3, all filenames are restricted to upper case letters, numbers and the underscore (_).
...........................

However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.

Code:

root@darkstar:~# mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt
Total translation table size: 0
Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0
Total directory bytes: 0
