View 2 RepliesI have an old lap top thats in good nick and I installed 10.10 on it. I had only used 10.9 before on my other old and rubbish acer. On 10.10 I have a problem where when I unplug the charger the computer boots down instantly. However, unlike all the treads I have seen, my computer can be re-started and run off battery for hours with no problem. I have mentioned this just now on the hardware thread but I don't see how its a hardware problem so I thought I should put it here.I also have a problem with the wireless/Internet becoming disabled after it goes to sleep. Only way to solve it is to restart it. I have checked the options in my inexpert way but have found no command to provoke such behavior. Has anyone tried re-booting when their "battery dies" after charger removed?

View 4 Replies View RelatedSlackware 13.0, dell vostro 1320. When I start up the laptop without the ac charger plugged in the keyboard doesn't work. This is the case when booting into runlevel 3 and 4. Then after restarting 3 or 4 times and getting sick of it, i plug the charger in, restart, get to the login screen and confirm that the keyboard works, unplug the charger and it's all good. I ssh into the laptop when the keyboard is not working and restart hald but it doesn't help. Btw, tried ubuntu and the problem wasn't there.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a rather odd issue, this week I installed Debian latest on to an old Acer Aspire 3810TZ; everything runs smoothly enough and I spent a good number of hours using the laptop on battery (about two or three, the battery is checked and in good enough condition given its age) then as the desktop widget reported the battery as being 22% or so full I decided to plug in the charger at which point the os reported the battery as being 0% and issued an immediate hibernation.
I have done a fair bit of searching for others whom have had the same problem, as I am sure its not a new one. But the majority of what I have read revolves around batteries not charging and mine certainly does, I just have to have the laptop switched off while I do so (unless its booted into windows, in which case its fine.)

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, with a wireless HP j4680. That prints on occassion. I've tricked it once by creating a new printer System/Admin/printers, setting the "new" printer to default then deleting the old printer. Not working that way this time. I've search the old forums, a lot of activity in 2007-2008 but nothing since.
Is there a way to defeat HP's efforts to force it's customers to purchase the extremely high, close to 50.00 dollars in my area.
I've read about the option to purchase programs but the "For Purchase" menu item does not appear in my software center (11.04). Is there something I need to do to enable it?

- can open most webpages and show all content including javascript, flash and whatever (unlike elinks which is text-only)
- is controllable entirely by keyboard and preferably with vim-like controls. (unlike firefox, google chrome).
- works out of the box (unlike uzbl)
- is fast
- is bugfree (unlike firefox and uzbl)
- is configurable
So please recommend a good web browser and tell me what features would make a web browser good.
I heard that Simple Backup 0.10.4 has bugs that doesn't allow it to create backups or replace them well.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

If so, what do you advise me to run in my Server to create regular backups of my shared folders with Win7 machines? I want it to make full backups not incremental ones if possible. and it has to be free, because i have to use it in a small enterprise.
i am using xubuntu and love it so far! fast and stable, but i have a question. i am not a big gamer, just a few casual games, i am also not an office document user. i do not use openoffice.org or libreoffice, i just have my basic text editor. i do not do any web developing or anything. basically i reply to and send a few emails a day. i use gmail for that, not an email program, i use facebook a few times a day. i watch a few tv shows online. i videos occasionally, and i post on these forums. but my computer feels empty, is there any good programs i can just play around with. conky was one, its alright, a little confusing though. is there just any fun programs to play with. i don't care what they are, work processors, or web browsers, just some oddball programs or something? heck i don't know, i am just bored on my pc and looking for some entertainment.

I just uploaded quite a bit of my music and files to my FTP server, and I really dont feel like having to go through and manually add links to a page so that I could browse them from anywhere.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04, and was doing some visual tweaking. One of the things I was doing was changing my mouse. I was having trouble so I played trying to get it to work. I've since found what the problem was here;But when I was trying to fix it, I installed bunch of other themes and tried them as well.When I did this I lost the theme that I wanted from the pointer menu. Thinking that maybe there was a limit to the number of X-11 mouse themes allowed I deleted all the ones that I had installed, and tried to install the theme I wanted again.
The issue seems to be that I can't install this theme again. The error window says "Failed. Can't move directory over directory". I assume that the computer made a copy of the file somewhere. I just can't find where. I tried the home directory and ctrl + h but I can't see anything there.
I'm new to Linux and really interested in learning more about it. Are they're any good tutorials on how linux works, or just unix commands?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have enabled ssh key based logins for one of my servers and disabled normal password based logins. It just occurred to me that the public key which I generated on my pc, and uploaded to the servers authorized_keys, may in fact only apply to my local PC / user account. So basically if my system crashes I would have no way to login to the server...? Is it not possible to "share" public keys so other people (PCs / accounts) can use them?
