General :: Recursive Write Permission On Cifs Mounted File System

May 14, 2010

I have mounted a iomega file system on a cetos os machine using

mount.cifs //filserver-ip/directory /home/my-home/mounted-file -o
user=username

(** mounted as root) The mounting works fine.

The problem arises when I try to create a sub-directory inside the mounted directory. All the newly created sub directories become write protected.

I am accessing this file system from R software and it needs to write/create directories in side this mounted directory.

how can newly created sub-directories will become automatically writable, so that R can create new sub-directories and write data inside those directories.

Slackware :: Advice On Supported VPS Hosting

It seems to me that [URL] is quite a good choice indeed, but I want to be sure before I engage my company with it. So for you who are using linode, are you all happy with it?

OpenSUSE :: Error: Compositing Is Not Supported On Your System

Dec 1, 2010

I am receiving the following error when trying to enable Compositing in Desktop Settings for KDE4 in openSuse 11.3-Xen

Code:
Error: Compositing is not supported on your system. Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available. I want to have desktop effects enabled but can't seem to figure out how to get this done. "Advanced" Tab is greyed out. "Enable desktop effects" is greyed out.

[Code]...

This worked to get X up and running in the Xen kernel. However, I'm pulling what hair I have left trying to figure out how to enable compositing in Xen. The entire motivation for my upgrade was this one feature (amongst some other things).

Please show me where I'm going wrong. I hope this is not a "live with it" type of scenario due to my using Xen.

Slackware :: System Uses 2 GB Out Of 8 GB - Why Not More

Apr 4, 2010

I am creating high CPU load on my system. Many large and huge files are copied between internal and external hard disks, and at the same time I am doing some office work and have a bunch of photos processed in a batch job.Looking at the system monitor, I can, however, see, that both CPU cores of my dual core processor are used heavily. But RAM beyond 2 GB is rarely used. Typically the maximum used RAM is 2 GB, no matter, how many files are copied and so on. Is this normal? I think, some of the tasks could be accomplished a lot faster, if the available RAM was used.

Slackware :: My System Shut Itself Down ?

Oct 29, 2009

My system just shut itself down as I was using it. I'd like to try to understand why.

First, I noticed there are 1 to 4 messages per second in my messages.1 through messages.4 files in /var/log going back to September 27. It probably started before then, but I don't have older logs.

There almost nothing else in the messages log but these messages, millions of them. They look like these:

Quote:

Then just before shutdown, there are a few dozens of these:

Quote:

And then right at the end, a switch to runlevel 0. I did not initiate that. Something else did. And finally a dbus-daemon segfault.

What other logs can I look at?

Slackware :: Restoring Whole System From A Tar.gz?

Mar 8, 2011

I save my whole system to a .tar.gz file weekly except for the /proc content. I have used this backup a few times to restore my system without issue.

Last time I restored, I discovered the following 2 issues I home somebody can explain:

#1: while extracting the .tar.gz using tar xzvf filename.tar.gz, I get the following error near the end of the restore process "tar: Incorrect Length". This error only occurs when I boot the system with the slackware 12.1 disc 1 CD. It does not occur if I try to restore from my working system, same file. Other than this, everything seems to be restored properly and the system boots up properly. I am just concerned by the meaning of this error.

#2: After restore, I do lilo -C /mnt/etc/lilo.conf to make sure the systems boots up properly. This works... however, I have discovered that just this won't make module autoloading work after the restore. When booting the restored system, no module autoload !

I have correct this by just entering setup when booted up using the slackware 12.1 disk 1 CD and going thru addswap, set target without format and the going thru the configuration menu and cancelling all question.

Why would modules not load automatically ?

I've never tried this before but from what I've found online, with KDE4 a lot of the usual vnc server programs won't work correctly. Anyone have any tips for getting it to work? It doesn't necessarily have to be vnc. If there's an alternative method to remote control of a computer, that will work too.

Recently I couldnt mount the windows share anymore, i didnt know the account iam using would go inactive if i never logged in.

Just where does cifs write a log if it can`t mount a windows share? If I knew where it is it would also be easier to find the reason if it doesn`t work.

Server :: Share CIFS Mount As NFS?

Mar 15, 2011

I am trying to image about 30 laptops with WinXP, and I am using Clonezilla and DRBL for the task. We will start migration to Win7 starting Q4, so for now we are still using XP. I used a Clonezilla live USB to capture a standardized image to a CIFS/SAMBA share on the enterprise file server. The file server does not support NFS. To deploy the image, I used Virtualbox to build a VM with Centos 5.5 and then later Ubuntu 10.10. I mounted the CIFS share to /home/partimag but I found that I cannot share this CIFS mount out as NFS so I was unable to deploy the image with the image still residing on the CIFS; I had to copy the image to the VM's local drive.

Now using the DRBL live distribution, which is Debian based, I was able to obtain the image from a CIFS share and then share it out to the clients to be imaged as NFS (I think). I was able to use the DRBL live for some older computers, but since that hasn't been updated in nearly 2 years, I think it's missing some device drivers for my newer machines so it doesn't work on them -- this is why I looked at using CentOS and Ubuntu. To mount the CIFS shares, I'm using the following command:

mount -t cifs -o user@domain //share_ip_addr/share_name/folder /home/mount_point

Do I need to do something different to enable the mounted CIFS share to be shared out as a NFS share so that the clients to be imaged can see the contents from the CIFS share as a NFS share? The below image depicts my setup. The workstation has two NICs. The 10 network is the enterprise network and the 192 network is for DRBL imaging only. DRBL/Clonezilla does PXE boot and leases DHCP for the laptops. The laptops are shielded from the enterprise LAN; I am not doing any kind of NAT on on the server. The Linux VM is built with dual NICs and are set to bridged mode so they appear to be a separate NIC from the VM host on the network even though they going into the same port on the wall. [URL]

CentOS 5 :: Can't Get Autofs Working (CIFS)?

Oct 1, 2009

Greetings. I cannot get autofs to mount a CIFS share. I tried to follow http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/WindowsShares .

a) Windows share is \server-01Share

b) user: backups, password: backups has READ access to this share

c) mount -t cifs //server-01/Share -o username=backups,password=backups /mnt/server-01 WORKS FINE

d) Note that most default Centos services (including all NFS stuff has been disabled on boot, if this makes any difference)

e) /etc/auto.master:

left default configuration including (should these be changed or rem'd out?:)

/misc /etc/auto.misc
/net -hosts
#added at end of file
/test/auto.test
f) created /test and /etc/auto.test
#auto.test
#note I tried rw and just r

test -fstype=cifs,rw,noperm,user=backups,pass=backups ://server-01/Share

g) ls /test = nothing
e) message log contains automount:..."lookup_read_master: lookup(nisplus): couldn't locate nis+ table auto.master"
