Changed my shell to zsh and somewhere along the way lost dircolors. When I type ls I get directories, files, symlinks, etc., in colour but when I tab to autocomplete commands in the shell the colours have disappeared. Not sure what I've done because I've been experimenting with rxvt-unicode as well, at the same time. If it's any use echo $TERM gives me rxvt-unicode-256color. Exporting $TERM as xterm gives the same result, i.e, no colours.I've tried the following:
Code:
cat /etc/DIR_COLORS > ~/.dircolors
As I say, for some reason ls does bring up files in colour, but tabbing to autocomplete
I'm using Debian 5.0.4 Lenny. Daily my logs kern.log, messages, and syslog are filled with errors regarding dircolors: Quote: Aug 24 23:05:34 myserver.com kernel: [1906415.362252] dircolors[11556]: segfault at 0 ip 08049e30 sp bfffcd4c error 6 in dircolors[8048000+8000] Aug 24 23:08:02 myserver.com kernel: [1906563.298468] dircolors[12296]: segfault at 0 ip 08049e30 sp bffff61c error 6 in dircolors[8048000+8000] Aug 24 23:10:30 myserver.com kernel: [1906711.794160] dircolors[12914]: segfault at 0 ip 08049e30 sp bfffe8fc error 6 in dircolors[8048000+8000] etc...
I've googled this to death and still haven't found a solution to fix or stop this. I read on man dircolors to: dircolors --version The output I receive on this cmd is only: Segmentation fault I do: dircolors --print-database The output I pasted here since it is quite long: [URL] It ends with: .wav 00;36 Segmentation fault
When I login over ssh or when I open a local text shell I can't get dircolors to show up.
If I open a shell in an X-Session the dircolors are there. Also, colors work fine over text mode and SSH, in both of them VIM works perfectly fine with my colorfull configurations.
This is the session I get when I do a remote login over SSH:
Following the premature announcement earlier today that prisoner number 13.37, aka "Slackware", has been released, the authorities would like to make it clear that no such release has taken place. Prisoner # 13.37 remains in detention and will only be released when his sentence has been served. You may let your children back out to play again now
Like others here it seems I had problems with the latest -current. I can't startx, no sound, etc. I put back the video drivers and such from the 13 CD but now have a bunch of other issues, video will flash every now and then and sometimes go blank so I can only reboot as exiting xwindows and going back in its still blank. I tried booting from the 13 cd and reinstalling without formatting my root partition but that dies in the kde games for some reason and setup won't start again. I was trying to not format and loose all the updates just put back 13 but that doesn't seem to be working.
I have a not yet encountered issue on my server tonight, this is weird as it seems it sounds like an old issue, but I didn't noticed that before (I always have a "task monitor" or "top" running somewhere)[URL]gam_server is taking "full cpu" (or 100% of one of my core),without anything special done from me, but the latest update to current...Does anybody had this behavior too ?I understand there are some way to sort that, but I was curious why is that thing is appearing in a 'vanilla' configuration... Isn't it weird somehow ?
PS/ I had nfs shares in my fstab, that I had to remove because as they're not always present, that was blocking for several minutes at boot time... It was not a big issue as those shares were not vital, yet it's unpleasant. The only thing I saw on the changelog was a "nfs-utils" update, maybe it's related ? Maybe the default "timeout" have been changed ?
I subscribe to DropBox and save all my important data in my /home/DropBox folder which, I presume, is living on my /home partition (/dev/sda3). I was hoping that I could create a new partition (/dev/sda4), 'move' my DropBox folder to this new partition so that when I use Clonezilla to make my back up images (/dev/sda1 & /dev/sda3) it would take much less time and space.
All my panels and desktop and wallpaper disappeared. I don't know how to get them back without restarting KDE4. I have too many things open. I can't right click the desktop > appearance settings and I don't know what to input into alt+F2 to get that system settings menu. Any ideas?
Running Slackware64 13.1 here. I started up Firefox this morning and all the text is completely blank - all the menus have disappeared and everything. I can't really think of a great way to explain it clearly so I've attached screen grabs of Firefox and Thunderbird (which has the same problem). Other GTK apps seem to be fine, it's just the Mozillas as far as I can tell.
I have tried removing both with code...
And then I reinstalled both Firefox and Thunderbird from .txz files I downloaded from a repository, but they're still the same. Firefox version is 3.6.3 and Thunderbird is 3.0.4.
Downloaded and installed Alien Bob's Audacity package for Slackware64 13.1, butit wouldn't run and came back with error that it can't find libSoundTouch.so.1.So, I downloaded, built, and installed the SlackBuild for SoundTouch.Audacity still says it can't find libSoundTouch.so.1.
After falling out with KDE4.2.4 and using fluxbox for a while, I was sufficiently impressed with my experiments with KDE4.4.3 in slackware 13.1 that I decided to go back to KDE. In particular I'm keen to use plasma netbook on my eee pc 1000H.
But I've hit an annoying snag. The problem is that if I set it to use plasma netbook (System settings>Desktop>Workspace>Form factor>Netbook) it works just fine for the rest of that session but next time I startx it goes back to the Desktop form factor.
The strange thing is that this didn't used to happen, it only started recently and to the best of my knowledge I haven't made any other significant changes or updates to the system. I tried removing the ~/.kde dir and letting kde setup from scratch but that didn't help.
I looked at the /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf file it says something completely diff than the iwconfig. iwconfig is saying there is no wireless extensions on lo and eth1 but on eth0 all my info is there now on the conf file it says and ip address on eth2 and nothing on eth 0, or 1. does anybody know why it keeps jumping back and forth? one week its eth0 and maybe 2 months from now its eth1.
My power settings is set to put the laptop screen to sleep after some minutes of inactivity. This works fine, however it doesn't want to come back to life if I move the mouse, type etc...
I have just installed Slackware 13.1 32bit. My hardware is a P-4 3Ghz with a gig of ram. Intel on board graphic and sound.
This is the best implementation of Kde I have used so far. Slack 13.1 is amazing. The install went very well and everything we configured properly.
My problem is when I start Kde or try to shut dowm or logout I get the same error for knotify: Unable to use the Xine Multimedia Backend:Could not find plugin 'Xine' for application 'Knotify'
I get this same error with the application name at the end of it. If I open amarok I get the same error message with amarok at the end. If I try to click a misic file in dolphin same error message.
When I try to shut down or log out from menu I get the xine error and nothing happens. The only way I can log out is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to get to the KDM log in screen and then I am able to shut down from the menu.
I have been looking on the forum and using google but have found nothing useful.
The error pops up when I try to play a cd or music on the hard drive.
i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.
10.04 I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04. Can someone explain to me how I get it back?
it was possible to back up time machine back ups from a mac in ubuntu.
I use a mac at work and use time machine to back up to an external hard drive which i take home each day. I wish to back up the time machine back ups off the external hard drive each day to my computer at home just to be safe is this possible?
I have managed to open the hard drive and have enabled view hidden files so i can see all the files but i am unable to copy them due to permission errors
I,m using Ubuntu 10.10 with Gimp. Ive got a lot of photos etc and need to back these up. Can I anyone suggest a good backup solution which does not require e to keep copying the same files? IE: Once the files are backed up I only want to back the files used since last back up?
I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:
I have been given the task to install slackware 13.1 over windows. I have downloaded and copied slackware 13.1 on to a disk, and rebooted the computer, but i am not getting what all the tutorials have shown. I have been looking for tutorials that specifically instruct me as to how to install slackware 13.1 on to a windows xp. I am not trying to dual run I just simply want to run slackware and slackware only.
1: How much does it affect securty, over a lan network? 2: Will it cause any other security issues? 3: The most important is can I forwad X11 from a 32 bit slackware to a 64bit slackware
it's possible to compile the 2.6.37 kernel patched with the autogroup patch on a Slackware 13.1 system running 2.6.33.4-smp with 2.6.33.4 headers? I just compiled and installed the 2.6.37-autogroup kernel from AUR on my ARCH setup and I like it especially when using firefox with lots of tabs open and other background apps also running. I did notice a speed and smothness difference in my ARCH testing setup with this kernel patch and I can get same results in 13.1??
I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.
I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.
I'm happy to announce Linvo 2009.1 rc6. It's a full-featured Linux distribution with a lot of applications by default, including an office suite (OpenOffice.org extended with plugins), a good internet browser (Firefox extended with plugins), a music player that supports music collection and a lot more - Exaile, a video player, and all the available codecs. It can open all types of file formats. It's a LiveCD, which means that you can test it without installing and after this optionally install it - it has a nice easy graphical installer.
It's the first Slackware-based LiveCD distribution with GNOME by default. It includes NetworkManager and initng in place of sysvinit. It also features accessibility tools. It is also the first release with the innovative portable applications system. This allows you to download application from the site (modules section), place it where you like, and use it. It's just a single file, no directories. You can also use this application without installing it, directly from the internet. However, after this, the speed of the application is limited by the speed of your connection, of course. Check out the "Applications" section on the website.
Besides this, you can install software with the apt-get-like system "slapt-get" and it's graphical front-end: GSlapt. It also contains src2pkg and sbopkg in case you want to compile something from source or existing SlackBuild Depfinder is included to find dependencies of packages. Click here for a guide on how to use those. I also managed to put development tools in there, like GCC, G++, svn, cvs, so on... This is a release candidate, and despite that it's OK for using. It has a bit more things to do until the release (like language selection on the boot menu), but I decided that it's important to put it here for testing.
We are pleased to present one of our new creations: pkgbuild, a tool written in standard C++, using libCURL, ZLib, BZip2 and libLZMA (part of XZ). It is a modern Slackware packages builder, network-transparent, multi-architecture, designed to greatly simplify the creation of a package, automatically executing the required post processing.
What does it do? Recognize and build packages for the following architectures: i386, i486, i586, i686, x86_64, IA64, IA32e, s390, s390x, sparc and sparc64.
how to on enable ling separate X sessions with dual monitors in slackware? In rhel all I have to do is enable it under the nvidia-settings... In slackware it does not work that well... to what I understand you have to configure a separate x session...
