Slackware :: All Text Disappeared From Firefox And Thunderbird / Get Them Back?
Oct 23, 2010
Running Slackware64 13.1 here. I started up Firefox this morning and all the text is completely blank - all the menus have disappeared and everything. I can't really think of a great way to explain it clearly so I've attached screen grabs of Firefox and Thunderbird (which has the same problem). Other GTK apps seem to be fine, it's just the Mozillas as far as I can tell.
I have tried removing both with code...
And then I reinstalled both Firefox and Thunderbird from .txz files I downloaded from a repository, but they're still the same. Firefox version is 3.6.3 and Thunderbird is 3.0.4.

All my panels and desktop and wallpaper disappeared. I don't know how to get them back without restarting KDE4. I have too many things open. I can't right click the desktop > appearance settings and I don't know what to input into alt+F2 to get that system settings menu. Any ideas?

I cannot read html in emails or in Firefox. It was working fine until I tried to modify the message composition settings in the Preferences menu.I was trying to make it so that I could forward messages in HTML to send to a colleague his flight itinerary.I had set all my messages to be composed in plain text by default with Enigmail.A Google search page for example will only show images but no text is rendered. I can see the blue underlines for links.
If I highlight the webpage and copy it to the Notepad, I can read the text. So the issue isn't that the pages aren't loading, but they are not displaying correctly. The same problem is also now present in my email. Please help! I don't know what to do short of reinstalling Ubuntu and I would rather not.I am on version 9.10 if that helps.

Well, that's about it - the firefox and thunderbird packages included on the first batch of official 13.1 updates keep crashing when I try to print a web page or an e-mail. Seamonkey, updated as well, can print as usual.

I'm preparing a laptop for Slackware 13.x or whatever the new release will be. I've installed '-current' x86_64 arch. Boy, is this baby fast on this laptop. I thought 13 was fast but oh well another thread.
My issue now is that with '-current' is that ThunderBird links won't open in FF. I click on a link in TB and noting happens. I searched and found '"Browser" problems in Thunderbird 3'.
In this thread, post #9;Quote:

and worked fine.

I modified the 'prefs.js' file. Of course it was done while app was not running. Still no joy. Further searches showed the same thing with most users bumping back to older versions. There's got to be fix and I refuse to give up to a computer let alone a DE.

I am having some problem with fonts in some websites in firefox. The fonts will not be visible! The image should be self explanatory. Let me add that I am trying to add support for unicode in linux something that I wasn't much familiar with up until now - so I messed a few things up before I managed to unicode in linux command line and konsole terminal. Additionally, I tried adding true type fonts (which I added in a new sub-folder /usr/share/fonts/ms-ttf) and run fc-cache. Moreover, I installed the fonts system-wide from within KDE system settings. In the end: I am stuck with a semi-working firefox; facebook and digitalblasphemy to name a few don't show any fonts.
Gmail and other sites work fine. Google-chrome has not been affected at all - all pages show up fine. Also the extra 'ms-ttf' fonts that I installed in kde system-wide do not appear in libre-office in the available fonts.. I am not sure if this has to do with the more general mess I've caused or it is some more specific matter. I tried following [URL] tips in compiling firefox but I decided not to install requiredbuilder in order to proceed with the installation - I ended up installing frefox-3.6.12 from -current, but the problem persists.

Now it seems as though all of my printers and my scanners have disappeared, also thunderbird will not open anymore. I find this very strange.. I can't even think of why this would happen.--When I start thunderbird it says starting thunderbird then does nothing.. if I try to start it again it says that it's already running.. which it is not..I have all of my updates updated.. You are using Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011 and supported until October 2012.

When logging in, I suddenly got a message saying "It appears you do not have the hardware to run Unity", and it initialized the old GNOME 2 desktop.
Ofcourse I have the hardware to run Unity (an NVIDIA GTX 580), and it has worked normally until now...
Now Unity won't come back, even after logging out / in or rebooting. The video driver works normally and NVIDIA X Server Settings does not show that there's anything wrong with my video card or drivers.
Is this a bug? Did this happen to anyone else? How do I get the Unity desktop back?

I was recently having problems with Me TV, and I had to kill it in a terminal window. When I killed it, it didn't release the DVB-T stick and when I launched Kaffeine, it told me that there was no device available. I re-booted rather than trying to figure out where the lock file was or whatever the problem might have been. Now, when I boot into my desktop, I am missing the menu bar and the task bar. Also, under Applications -> Settings -> XFCE Settings Manager, the Panel icon doesn't launch any settings dialog when clicked. How can I get my menu bar and task bar back?

For some reason, I can't get network-manager to appear on the task bar so that I can edit the connections. Also, network manager doesn't appear in system/prefs menu. if I try typing at the terminal 'sudo nm-applet" it says "An instance of nm-applet is already running. ** (nm-applet:9074): WARNING **: <WARN> constructor(): Couldn't initialize the D-Bus manager." If I inspect the system | preferences | startup apps , network manager is selected with the command "nm-applet --sm-disable".
I can see "network-manager" shown in /etc/inid.d but "sudo network-manager" gives "command not found". Anyone know what I have to do to get it working ? Uninstalling and re-installing hasn't worked. I have tried installing Wicd and that shows Lan & wireless connections ok but it *doesn't show my usb data-dongle* which I've just got working using the very useful application UsbModem_Switch by Draisberghof .
So the workaround for me is to call that connection manually ( if I need to use the usb data-card dongle ) with the command "sudo usb_modeswitch -W -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/0471:1210". However, if I can get the network-manager applet thing to show up and use that it would be easier. Or is there a better alternative to Wicd which can handle usb data-card modem connections ?

The network manager applet has disappeared from my top panel so now I cannot see what local wireless networks are available. I just came from the library and was unable to connect to their wi-fi because the computer wasn't trying to detect it. All I have is a network connections applet that seems fairly useless as it just gives me info on networks I've used in the past and not on any currently available networks. How do I get this Network Manager back and functioning?

Yesterday while trying (unsuccessfully) to get a new Bluetooth dongle set up I lost the network manager applet. When I rebooted, after giving up on Bluetooth in Ubuntu, I had no way of connecting to my wireless network. In command line (iwconfig & iwlist scan) I was able to see the wireless router. So the wireless card is working correctly. How do I reinstall the network manager applet? Oh even when use a wired connection to the router there is no connection.

How do i roll back firefox5beta to firefox4 and keep updating to the latest stable releases w/out upgrading to beta? The only extension that isn't working is FEBE which is incompatible w/ firefox5beta (profile, extension and preference backup). Have to use FEBE beta7 under Firefox4 so I don't think a compatible release for Firefox5beta is going to come out any time soon.

take it as read im still learning Ubuntu and occassionally do stupid things, like click on the unsubcribe buttons on unwanted email.
Did that and for some obscure reason i lost the default firefox icon from the top task bar. I could make a launcher on the desktop but i failed to find the firefox exe. I did get it to show hidden files, found the firefox folder but no exe file or similiar to launch.
Would someone be so kind as to tell me where to drill so i can at least put the firefox launcher on the desktop. As a fill in im using chromium, and i did find its folder hidden in firefox's.
ie... [username]/mozilla/firefox/chromium ??

As of today my system is no longer recognizing empty cd's. If I put in a dvd or cd with anything on it, it is mounted properly and shows up in the file manager. When trying to burn some cd's today, every program says that there is no media to record to (yes, I put in several different blank cd's to be sure). K3b gives an error that says it cannot continue and probably the hard disk is full ( over 30 gigs left open).
All other programs are running fine. Nothing installed or updated since yesterday.
It plays fine, both cd's and dvd's.

This is a fresh install of 11.2 KDE-4.3.1.
After reviewing all of the 11.2 Milestone 64-bit DVDs, Milestone 1 - 8 - I was always able to launch Firefox from Thunderbird in search of add-ons or an html link.
It stopped working in RC1, RC2.
I thought this was resolved for openSUSE 11.2. The problem still exists!
Now, thinking the problem was with Thunderbird 3.0.4b. I navigated to Configure Desktop --> Personal Settings --> General --> Default Applications:
Changed Email Client from KMail to Thunderbird
From within KMail I can launch Firefox. However, Thunderbird 3.0.4b does NOT launch Konqueror nor Firefox 3.5.4 !!
In addition the Thunderbird 3.04b Help does NOT work.
Could the setting of Default Applications be broken in KDE-4.3.1 " release 6 " ??
I'm sure I cannot be the only one experiencing this at home???

I'm trying to figure out why firefox and thunderbird keep crashing on me. I just installed Suse 11.3 64-bit with Gnome 2.30.0. I am using firefox version 3.6.12 and thunderbird version 3.1.6. They crash half of the time when something has to load, such as an attachment or download. Is there anything I can do about this?

My internet connection is a dial-up connection. Downloading huge multi-megabyte files is not a reasonable way for me to obtain software. I am interested in the latest versions of Firefox and Thunderbird for my Linux box (CentOS 5.4). I used to be able to order a CD of each program directly from Mozilla, but that option seems to have gone away. Does anyone know of a reliable source of CDs or DVDs of Mozilla software for Linux? The outfit I used to order Linux CDs from seems to have dropped that business.
