Slackware :: Tovid And Dependency (x264) - Will It Conflict Alien Bob's VLC?
Jun 10, 2010
I'm trying the DVD authoring stuff on Slackware, so okay I have downloaded Tovid along with its dozens of dependencies that has their own dependencies and so on...Now, one of the dependency is x264 (for encoding H264/AVC video streams). I already have alien bob's VLC from the uk site (restricted packages) and I've read on his blog (if I'm not mistaken) that it has the H264 capability (don't know how to describe it ).Is there any chance that it will conflict with this x264 library?

Running CentOS 5.3
Recently installed - manually, not with yum, the rpm distribution of the latest MySql (5.1.34) as I needed the latest version, not the one that YUM lists. I am now trying to set up (for the first time) an email server on the same system, and I have been led to believe that postfix and dovecot are the way to go. However when I try to install dovecot I get this:

The version of mencoder I currently have installed segfaults (immediately) when you ask it to convert x264-encoded MKVs to another format. One sample command-line would be:
Code:
mencoder -nosound -ovc libdv Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica_720p_GG_-_06.mkv -o a.avi
This produces the following output:
Code:
MEncoder 20110702-4.5.2 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team
success: format: 0 data: 0x0 - 0x1c43987e
libavformat file format detected.
[Code]...
Incidentally, I'm wondering if the version of FFMpeg that the MPlayer configure script downloads might be at fault. The slightly outdated FFMpeg I installed from SBo (6.1) does not crash when converting the same file. And no, I can't use either Alien Bob's Mplayer build or the MPlayer binaries included with Slackware. Neither is built against either libdv or x264. I need libdv as an output codec.

I am using current and want to install kde 4.5 from alien's, here is my problem. I don't understand the statement below. Below are the steps you take to install or upgrade to KDE 4.5.0. First, change your current directory to where you found this README. From within this directory, you run the following commands as root.
On Slackware 32-bit:
# upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new x86/deps/*.t?z
# upgradepkg --reinstall --install-new x86/kde/*.t?z
There is 1 dependent needed and it is installed but I can't figure out how to go any further. Do I need to add him to my mirror list or what?

How users to install the latest svn versions of x264, ffmpeg and mplayer. Primarily, this is important for users who rip movies from dvds.
How do I perform the same tasks using sbopkg? I believe some compilation options must be changed to reflect the svn changes.
Has anyone done this before? Are the steps important when using slackware 13 x86_64?

I want to let vlc take use of my Intel HD's H264 hardware decoder. I installed libva with the SlackBuild from SBo. But Alien said libva should match the version vlc built with. So I decided rebuild vlc with new libva. So I changed the LIBVA to 0.31.1-1+sds4 and added --enable-i965-driver to libva's configure. Building was fine but when I opened a flash video(h264) it said that I don't have h264 plugin and refused to continue. After I changed the version number back, vlc can play h264 again. As a compromise, I comment out make_libva in the building phase. All things went well then. It won't consume too much CPU even when play large h264 So what is wrong with new libva? I noticed vlc 1.1.4 was released, but I think Alien is more qualified to bump the version. So I didn't change that.

We can have now the KDE 4.5.1 in place of 4.5.0 in alien's ktown depositories.I've read the readme file.

The error has to do with Twolame failing to compile. Which is strange to me because it compiled fine by itself with the slackbuilds build.
The error log is attached.

Best way to go about upgrading current with Eric's 4.4 packages installed. It looks like some of the changes in current are newer versions than what I'm running with the 4.4. packages installed so I'm not real sure of the best path to follow . Would it be better to just blacklist the 4.4. packages and proceed with the upgrade or does somebody else have a better idea?

I know there has to be an easier way to do this than to download each file individually. On an ftp site I would just use
PHP Code...
But with those files being on an HTTP server and wget not supporting HTTP file globbing I'm at a loss.
What is a one step method to recursively download all files in a directory on an HTTP server?

I am running Slackware64 -current. I just upgraded KDE to 4.6.0 from Alien Bob's ktown repo, and upon doing so my battery monitor no longer functions properly. More specifically, the icon will appear in the panel, but when I choose the option to show the charge/discharge state it does not show. The icon only ever shows that the battery is not plugged in to an external power source (showing a plug and a red x). It is important that I get the battery monitor functional once again as I am running my new Slackware64 -current install on a laptop and don't like to be left wondering when my laptop's battery will die and if I need to plug it in.

I am a Linux noob (running Ubuntu 9.10) and not even an advanced Win. user. However, my switch to Linux was for simplicity, stability, fewer crashes, and the open-source software philosophy. However, Ubuntu hasn't been what I am hoping for. While Scientific Linux and Vector seem like good second choices, they don't seem to have the community/enthusiasm that Slackware has. However everything I read is all about "dependency management" w/r/t Slackware. Is this really a big problem? As a newbie, how will I deal with it? I am willing to learn but realize that I am starting from scratch.

Moderator: If this post doesnt belong here, please move it to where it belongs. I like the KDE environment but there are so many menu items that I am not interested in or do not use. For example, I use LibreOffice, not Koffice; I use only Firefox & Chrome; I dont use a PIM.There seems to be a lot of duplication to satisfy different preferences.Further, there are a bunch of environments (flukebox etc) that I am not interested in. I thought that if I removed all the stuff that is of no interest to me, that I could have a personalized, uncluttered Slackware 13.37 system that would occupy less disk space and take less time to back up.
I know that you can remove menu items without removing the underlying programs but, if I can get rid of the programs without trashing my system, that is what I would like to do. (I am assuming that I can reinstall some or all later.)
If I were a Slackware guru, I would probably install some sort of Slackware Minimal but then I would probably drive you all crazy with endless posts to this forum. So, the question is: If I use pkgtool to remove the stuff that I do not want, will I end up in Dependency issue Hell

I'm excited to try the new 2.0.1 version of Guile. I'm running Slackware64 13.37 and the latest version of Guile distributed with it is 1.8.8. I see that this new version, as part of it's new capabilities, has a few new requirements. I have built and installed libffi, libunistring and libgc according to their install instructions, but Guile's configure script can't find them.
I have tried manually creating libffi.pc libunistring.pc and libgc.pc files, which has allowed configure to get past the first two, but I still can't determine the correct name for libgc. Further, I am now not confident that Guile will find these where it expects to find them in the end. I would like to ask for some clarification of the install process for this new version of Guile, but I'm not sure whom to ask.

I am trying to build more packages these days than in years before, it seems, but somehow I manage to run into trouble quite often. This time I want to install Truecrypt 6.3a on my system. According to the description there are two dependencies, one of them being wxGTK.Ok, downloaded wxGTK and tried to build it both with sbopkg and on the CLI just by executing the SBo script. But:
Code:
checking for Xinerama... yes
checking for Xxf86vm extension... yes

Just wondering whether there are plans to upgrade the x264 in the rpmfusion repo to a more recent build. These are the current ones in rpmfusion and what I have installed. Build date is October 2009.

Unfortunately things like h264enc and I'm sure others have moved on ahead and the dependencies on the x264 libraries means things like ffmpeg, mencoder, gstreamer, vlc, avidemux are having issues. With major dependencies it's difficult to upgrade the individiual components. A couple of examples, ffmpeg requires a newer build as it has some issues with MS's dvr-ms format. Apparently it was fixed in a newer release of the code. Another is some of the encode parameters in x264 being used in h264enc such as "weightp", "mbtree" which appear to be only supported in newer versions of the x264 libraries. Any chance that this is being looked at and newer and more recent builds of x264, and then I suspect with mencoder, ffmpeg etc...?

As I understand (and remember) debian does not package x264 with its ffmpeg. [I say remember because I have a debian-multimedia line in my sources.list that I believe I added when I wanted a x264 enabled ffmpeg]
Is this status still the same? Do we still need to compile ffmpeg by hand if we want x264?

I have a load of XViD videos and I want to re-encode them into x264 - when I say a load, I mean over 300, anyone have any programs they reccomend to do it?I want to make them into those "future-sized movies" (700mb --> 300mb, 170mb --> 95mb, 350mb --> 150mb), what settings should I use? I want to keep the quality of the originals intact, along with the video sizes if possible, but if not, I don't really mind, just make them smaller. Here are the settings some people use in windows:oh yeah, one last thing - fast encoders please, I know it'll take a good while, but I want it to take as little time as possible please
